When was the last gig you went to where you felt like your ears were filled with tiny, robotic mosquitos the next day?
Is this a worthwhile experience?
Does the band need to play hell loud to get their point across?
I'm of two minds about this myself- I'll never forget Bailterpace live, both the energy of the live performance, and the fact they were always guaranteed to be the loudest band I would ever see.
I am not excited about the idea of profound hearing loss, and I'm now a lot more careful, earplugs and going outside for a breather every now and then.
Still, the ANTICIPATION of the show always felt REWARDED somehow with how fckn loud they played. Physically assaulted by the volume. If it wasn't as loud, would I remember it the way I do now?
Peace people

i get that after every gig... and thats why i'm wearing ear plugs...
its worth it in the short term, reminds u how awesome the band was, but i remeber some guy from berlin who talked about how fucked up his hearing was after goin to like 200 gigs or something along those lines
and i value my hearing too much to sacrifice it for the joy of being totally imersed in the music, its not the same with ear plugs, its still great, but not the same...

yeah i agree with that i've never found the feelers that good, cause when i've seen em they haven't been that loud (could just be the feelers), loud music makes u hear it, u can't put it in the background, u have to listen...
the bands i love most, shihad, fur patrol, TLBT, make the most use of the are they have and fill it with beautiful music, its just awesome really, being buffeted by the music...

when i regularly had ringing ears at band practise from the previous time, i realised i had to do something. either a) practise somewhere less than full volume or b) wear ear plugs. i chose to wear ear plugs. it was strange for a while, but now when i play with a band i prefer to wear plugs, but when i am watching another band i dislike plugs. so i might last to 35 before i go deaf.

there are some earplugs that u can purchase for about 50 to 80 dollars. they pour the substance into your ears so it gets the shape/mould and then hardens. they decrease the decibel level and they don't muffle the highs and make the sound muddy, they just make the sound quieter! sounds like i'm making a sales pitch!?!

yeah, nice point fink.
syd barret has that kinda aura of legend going on about him, having quite Pink Floyd while the going was good back in the 60s.
The Pixies just about had it sussed, quitting after Trompe Le Monde.
The Stone Roses should have never made a second album: they had immortality in the bag had they let it lie after their first one.
Supergrass are headed down the path of rehashed mediocrity. They are, in fact, turning into the Rolling Stones.
Of current bands that should quit before they end up playing at a Hawkes Bay vineyard: Coldplay, the aforementioned Supergrass, and the Chemical Brothers...

To become 'immortalised' I think you ...
To become 'immortalised' I think you have to quit while your ahead, whether your pushed into it (you die) or you just choose to do it.
One of the main reasons Led Zeppelin have been 'immortalised' is because their drummer died while they were still at their peak, who knows what shit they would have produced if they had continued – we will never know, so the band takes on this mythical persona of pure perfection, same could be said for Hendrix, Curtis….etc I mean we can only hear the recordings of these people and see some scratchy footage of live shows, the rest is chinese whispers.
Bowie has perhaps managed to hang in there for the sole reason that he keeps reinventing him self, so Ziggy Stardust is ‘Fantastic’ but Aladin Sane is ‘mediocre’ but the two somehow can be viewed as separate entities.
The Rolling Stones perhaps should have packed it in a long time ago ditto the Beastie Boys, Moby…..(anymore). Refused and At The Drive In have esculated their immortalisation factor 100 fold since breaking up, lets not forget Nirvana and Queen.
Im not saying that these people wernt great (all of them were) but what you do in detriment to your persona has far more effect on your public character then the positive.
Quit while your ahead.
Bands at the moment that should probably quite while they are ahead: QOTSA, RADIOHEAD , THE DATSUNS ; ) …………… hahahahaha anymore?
P.S. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page have continued to release separate and combined recordings to very very poor reviews.
We can't help but play loud, but I ...
We can't help but play loud, but I think its detrimental to the overall enjoyment to a gig if its hurtin'. I don't know how many gigs I've been to at Indigo or Bodega where the band mix is sweet, buts its just too goddamn noisy. I reckon more peeps would be attracted to gigs in Welly if the sound was at a controlled level. Punters want to hear the music mixed well, and a conversation 5 minutes after the band fin. Not soft sound, just at that level where your ears wont bleed when you're up front moshing...which actually happened to my bassplayer - Shihad, Newplymouth, Big Day In circa 1995. They were FUCKIN noisy.
I've just started to wear ear plugs ...
I've just started to wear ear plugs because I'm getting sick of ringing ears. I was reluctant to do so, but I've discovered that bands sound just as good, just not as loud.
It actually seems to improve the sound. It seems that if the sound is above a certain level, it distorts so much that I can't quite hear stuff very clearly. Ear plugs cut out the distorting making things sound sharper and brighter.
Of course, that also means that crap bands hoping to hide behind a wall of noise come across sounding as shitty as they really are.

I don't like to wear ear plugs at ...
I don't like to wear ear plugs at gigs, nor at practice.
I went to watch HDU at Bodega with ear plugs in (due to them being sooo loud the last time I'd seen them,) but the plugs just cut out far too much of the sound... meaning I had to take them out to fully enjoy the experience.
And at practices I will often need to take out my plugs to hear what I am doing.
I plan on remedying this by getting some really expensive ear plugs. Professional ear plugs cost quite a bit of money, because they are individually moulded to your ears ($300 or something, I think.) I have heard people swearing by these plugs, saying that they still let you hear everything, they just reduce the volume.
They sound like a good investment to make.
The ones that I use were only $35 from ...
The ones that I use were only $35 from the hearing clinic in Mt Victoria and they are superb!
The reason being that they only cut out the harmful stuff that you don't really hear anyway (so the quality of sound is not diminished in anyway).
The great upshot of this is that I leave practices and gigs a lot more refreshed because my ears aren't exhausted from working overtime to prevent me from going deaf - hence I'm able to enjoy the music more.
This is a personal thing, but I know there are people out there who enjoy being "assaulted' by noise but personally, I'd like to be able to enjoy music in ten years time as well as now (and also enjoy the nuances of sound as opposed to loud glutteral noise, which I also enjoy)
sorry to be a pious bitch
here's a nice articles on decibels (slightly unrelated)
peace
