Nu Metal

How do you define "nu metal"?
i mean...isn't nu metal rap/rock. Rapping the verse, singing the chorus all to a rock beat?
obviously Linkin Park are nu metal, with Chester and Mike, and other bands like limp bizkit, papa roach whose vocalists rap the verse, and (try to) sing the chorus....but what about bands like Incubus or the Lost Prophets? Brendon Boyd doesn't try to rap, neither does Ian Watkins. What then is their genre?

Forums: The Bar,

Arent they just like nu rock?

For starters, the difference between nu metal and nu rock is the same as the difference between metal and rock. I think Linkin Park is nu rock; I'd label Incubus as pop.

I think the term nu-metal was coined originally to describe metal, but with decks and rapping. I don't think it necessarily has to include those features now though...

//I'd label Incubus as pop
Well, that's a bit harsh - maybe they're kinda rocky..

I think the term "nu" has been overused now - it's just used to describe any rock / metal band post-Korn.

Incubus are hard to fit in a category because their new album, Morning View, is, defiently more Pop than anything else. However their older albums are more rock.
lets just call it even and call them pop/rock.

//I'd label Incubus as pop

Everytime I think that I go back and remember that SCIENCE and everything before it is not Commercial like Morning View of Make Yourself

Make yourself wasn't very Commercial, only Drive and Stellar.

And Pardon me, and one other single, but it wasn't that well known.

//Make yourself wasn't very Commercial, only Drive and Stellar.

I guess not, id say Morning View was. "Stellar" was a cool song, it didn't seem that commercial, "Drive" was ok but i'd say "Are you in" was very commercial and overplayed.

//And Pardon me, and one other single, but it wasn't that well known.

I didn't find Pardon me very commercial either, it would be my second favourite Incubus song next to "11am".

Is it me or was Morning View a real letdown??

//lets just call it even and call them pop/rock.

no lets just call them mainstream rock instead, its more neutralised.

//Is it me or was Morning View a real letdown??

You're right, it was a letdown.
It seems that Incubus have Succumb to the pressure of mainstream and being popular.
Its a shame. :(

Well, Lostprophets arent exactly metal are they, i find them hard to put into a style or genre. Perhaps you could say they are alternative metalrock nu-something blah blah. I dunno.

Yeah, I would say they're kinda like skater rock, but they're too serious to be stuck in with Blink182 and Sum41.

I think they sorta fit into the same category as a lot of bands that have been termed 'nu-metal' but they're not, really - like Papa Roach and Alien Ant Farm.

who said alien ant farm was nu-metal??

'coz thats just stupid:)

...which is exactly my point.
:D

Thats as obsurd as Coldplay with a Turntablist! ;)

It's as obsurd as Eminem collaborating with K'lee!?!

I hate all these different genre names

i hate all these nu metal topics

same here

I hate nu metal

i hate nu-metal in general

what a copy cat

i hate Saul.....oops!

And that's coming from someone who joined 4 fuckin days ago, and who I have never even interacted with. You're cool man.

i dont need to interact with you much, Saul
i already know your a prick.

watch it lostprophet , saul might call you a bad name..or insult a band you like....

//You're cool man

saul its unusual of you to be sayign constructive thing about new members, good work keep it up

Nonbreed you don't do humor well, I suggest you stop now.

yeah these genre names are just silly, its boring trying to classify a band.

watch out for saul he gets on everyones nerves! including mine!

not mine, just makes me laugh

Sauly, sauly, sauly...when will you ever learn.

...

Ahh my mistake to post a blank post. Nu-metal sounds like a pathetic attempt at trying mesh death metal, speed metal and thrash metal all in one without guitar solos into pop song structures with a random attempt at melody and rap.

// Nu-metal sounds like a pathetic attempt at trying mesh death metal, speed metal and thrash metal

righto

Its such a tip-off and understatement when people put System of a Down into the "nu-metal"category.
