Should Drummers sing??!!

as posted a couple below it was about my band finding a singer but i can sing like a bird ;D i was wondering what people thought about drummers singing??!!

Forums: The Bar,

Hey dude, i reckon it all depends on whether the drummer is both comfortable singing and drumming, and has some talent. And i guess it also depends on what the rest of the band thinks, to.
Whats your experience with drumming/singing dr3am??

Being a drummer myself, I hate singing, but have to do it in the band I'm in.
If the stuff your doing is fast & your doing lots of fills & shit, the mic will get in the way, you can get a headset mic but they suck, plus your voice won't sound to good when your doing a lot of drumming shit.
I think the drummer being the main singer looks stupid (example Rubicon) since the drummer is in the back & the main singer should be in the front!!
If your a good singer maybe you should find another drummer?? (I know that doesn't sound good)

ditto
i dont like to sing and drum at the same time

I like the idea of a drummer singing., but i agree: only if they have the talent to pull it off.

//I think the drummer being the main singer looks stupid (example Rubicon)// - well after seeing Rubicon play live many times, i reckon Paul pulls it off well. Part of the reason why i love Rubicon is because live, they are natural and its really cool and more interesting to watch when Paul and Jon change over instruments. It adds a bit of variety. Paul has been drumming since he was 3 so i think hes had enuff experience at playing/singing to make it work.

I might be piss easy but not every drummer can pull it off. Too be honest i think Paul Reid is better then what people give him credit for.

like im not a drummer, but his beats look fucken simple....it wouldnt be that hard to sing playing simple as shit beats

well he does it well.

anyway doesn't he play guitar in like a quarter of the tracks anyway??

yeah Paul does drums and bass.

Rubicon songs are piss easy to play on drums, so its not hard.
If he was playing Tool songs then it would be a different story

ok well maybe not but he still wasnt too crap to be in the Loves Ugly Children, Growler and the D4....
personally the best drummer ive ever seen is Janet Weiss...from Sleater-Kinney!!!! fuck she rocks!! /m/

I didn't say he sucked, it just easy to drum & sing Rubicon songs at the same time.

Speaking as a Drummer myself, I have nothing against drummers singing. However, from a personal point of view, despite the fact that I can't sing I did try backing vocals in my band and found it really difficult to do the two at the same time!!!!!

if the sound turns you on,
then use it
you see my point?

thats the most sense you've ever made to me ocphuman.

i have my moments like all good humans

I dont reckon Drummers should be the main singer, either.
Why dont you do what Dave Grohl (The Best Drummer Ever) did and drum AND sing, for different bands??
Well it worked for him.

Look at Levon Helm.

Greta
Superette
yum!
superb backing vocals.

Andrea
Fang
Same deal.

Steve from Uncle Monkey is a wicked singer.

As is the guy from the Deville Brothers.

its perfectly fucking wicked

do as much as you want, arguing all these limitations just reinforces them.
there are no rules. i know we all *know* that, but how many of us construct a framework of what our band 'is' (or 'should' be) and then never depart from it.

your not a three peice band, your not a singing drummer, your not just this or just that.
you are an evolving creator of sound (or nonsound)

its not an issue if the drummer is a good vocalist and the music ends up sounding good, who cares.
I mean live, i prefer seeing the singer up the front, but I wouldn't stress over it too much.

There are no rules in music. And if a drummer wants to sing lead vocals why not?? I can respect someone who is going against the pre-conceived ideal of what a band should look like, wheter its bass and guitars at the side and vocalist in the middle.

//I think the drummer being the main singer looks stupid (example Rubicon) since the drummer is in the back & the main singer should be in the front!!

Well with Tool at their concert this year Maynard was on a podium at the back behind the drummer.

//Well with Tool at their concert this year Maynard was on a podium at the back behind the drummer.

so maynard was behind but ABOVE the drummer???

Well the podium was high up but i vaguely remember it. They were spread out, I don't recall Maynard coming to the front much.

weird, the front man is well er usually @ the front...

Well you'd kinda expect this from Tool a band who thinks outside the square.

ahhh lets have a tool debate.

Tool is kinda like MC Hammer

maynard looks kinda like MC hammer too

tool is a manufactured pop band, no wait thats NIN. :P

you cant touch this

last i heard, trent hired the guy who writes songs for britney spears to help him with his new album. should be rockin'.

ha

LOL When i said to expect things out of the square not out of hyperspace!

This is just in: New NIN album March featuring collaborations with K'lee, Avril Lavigne and Christina Aguilera. produced by Shania Twain.

One of the guys from N*E*R*D write most of britneys songs.
go figure.

I think you'll find it was under the name The Neptunes and it was the beats that they did not the lyrics. The Neptunes is their producing name, Justin Timberlake (michael jackson 2.0)'s new song is done by them.

Really?
Im not so sure....

god it would be good to be britney spears, just to be her(hehe) but also to be payed millions of dollars to sing songs other people wrote for you....

i hope it is better than matty j's work on "Things Falling Apart"

seriously why does it even matter??

Sure, if you can do both & like doing it, then go for it!!

But this is really a drummer's question, drumming & singing is a lot harder then playing guitar & singing.
I do sing & play drums, but really only on the easy songs, when your doing fills & rolls when your singing your voice can go all fucked up.

Your absolutley right Tama Drummer I agree as a Drummer myself

If they can do sing, I don't see why not.

I wouldn't know, but it sounds hard to be able to concentrate on the two things, keeping them at a decent/good quality at the same time.

megaccino someone told me they saw you pashing jon jr at the cusp. oooooooooooo *giggle*

Did someone honestly tell you that? Or are you just being funny? That would just be so wrong, since we both have significant others back home.

a scandalous affair! even better!

i dont think drummers should sing.

imagine the lyrical content........hahahahaha

only joking
