Why Do People Become Obssessed With A Band???

it's just something i've been thinking about...
i know i was and still am obssessed over shihad, but is it something everyone goes through???
i've seen it thru bands like shihad, zed, rubicon, blindspott...
is it normal???
is it right???
it embarrases me to remember how much i worshipped shihad, "back in the day" i think being invloved on NZM showed me how much diversity there was and how not to be so arrogant as to assume there was nothing wrong with shihad, or any other band i intensely liked...
is it something for young teenagers???
or does it continue on till adulthood???
cause to me it reeks of imaturity really, the whole living ur life for the band
and when do u cross the line from being a fan to being obsessive???
i get told i'm obssessive over shihad, i think its just cause i've read a lot, call it a small hobby if u will, but when does it leave the realm of a friendly pursuit, into something a lil more darker???
i've been readin thru forums recently and the same things stick out at me when i read em, the fervent fanaticism about the band, no faults at all about them, the fact they're usually gorgeous
whats with it???
could u guys give ur opinion??? cause i'd appreciate it..

Forums: NZ Music,

good points raised here Jon. i'm one to talk!!!
i agree there's lines between a fan and obsessive...i used to be worse. much worse. But then reading an interview with a band...and realising that they really are just people and they just want to be treated like normal people, i have since calmed done a lot.
I think it's since ive really started getting into local music and a whole range of it, that i've discovered that they are so normal and real. When i used to like overseas acts (like seriously love them!!!) it was so easy to become fanatical about them. overseas hype is so much bigger and they were so far away it was easy to see them as anything but 'real' people.
I have learnt a lot within the past 5 or 6 years...especially about people and the difference between 'rockstars' and musicians...if that makes sense...
anyways, i think it's a normal thing to go thru...either having really strong admirations for bands or a real love for them...as long as it doesnt get taken too far..with the involvement of anyone else in a bad way...ie stalking the band...or perverted/twisted/sick/dirty letters...what harm can it do? I know from plenty of self experience that in most cases, you'll eventually grow out of it and if you don't well, that just proves your committment! It is the 'fans' that make and break bands. We're all special. /m/

i personally think it happens when the music "connects" with you like you hear "that song" and you can somehow relate to it, what the artist is trying to portray. and as you said you start looking for documents on this band to learn more about them, there past(fan sites are great for this),how they started as a band etc. people start giving you strange looks when you know how to play every song they ever wrote on guitar and refer to the people in the band by first names and have individual posters of each on youre walls - is this the "darkness" youre talking about jon??.

i wouldnt say its only for teenagers as my old man is a die hard springsteen fan, he has everysong ever wrote on his computer(for listening to)and every cd he ever made still in a plastic sealed unopened case because "one day itl be valuable".

i wouldnt say it a darkness. its not to common but its not a rare occassion to come accross someone who is as you say "obsessed" with a band

its not "obsessed", its "interested and involved"

yeah, thats my excuse aswell

// its not "obsessed", its "interested and involved"

ha, you keep telling yourself that prozaco

Man saul, what a valuable statement that was. Cool man.

Umm there's more behind that comment than what you read. I happen to know a few things about prozaco, it was a cheeky dig.

give it up saul. the only thing you know about me is that i dig robin finck, and most people know that. it doesn't even offend or embarrass me (like you want it to) when you run around yelling "prozaco is obsessed with robin finck!". he's my favourite guitarist. please get over it.

I reckon I know more about you than he does

You know you're right prozaco, I'm sick of being bitter all the time. Finck is a great guitar player, and he's one of the very few of recent years that generally plays with feeling comparable to slash. You have every right to like Finck. Can I ask you this then Prozaco, how come you love finck so much but don't like his current project that he's in?

// I reckon I know more about you than he does //

Oh look it's the pathetic loser who thinks he's cool because he's liked on a message board.

Saul is a "obsessed" Slash fan, why name yourself after him then??

//Oh look it's the pathetic loser who thinks he's cool because he's liked on a message board.

haha, thanks!!!

Sure I'm a die hard gunner, and a huge slash fan but I'm not what you would call obsessed.

// i do dislike axl though, and i don't like his new songs//

Axl Rose is comparable to Fred Durst of the 80s. Limp Bizkit kinda remind me of the new Guns N Roses.

//Sure I'm a die hard gunner, and a huge slash fan but I'm not what you would call obsessed.

I actually know this guy who only spins GNR records and sometimes the Chillies. It's ok to like them but there is more music beyond Gunners.

// what album? the thing that most bothers me about the new gnr is that there IS no album, and way too many empty promises about it coming out. will it ever come out?//

Yeah well its been what 7 years since the last GNR Record?? And there still is none

// the album will contain better stuff.

what a remastered greatest hits album?? Wheres some new songs then??

// It's ok to like them but there is more music beyond Gunners.

quote me where I've said that I only listen to gn'r. They're my favourite band, get over it.

// Yeah well its been what 7 years since the last GNR Record?? And there still is none

Honestly man shut the fuck up with your ignorant bullshit

// Wheres some new songs then??

Umm they've actually introduced 6 new songs that they play regulary in concert.

//quote me where I've said that I only listen to gn'r. They're my favourite band, get over it.

I said MY friend ONLY listens to GnR apart from the Chillies, it was a generalisation. Thats fine if their your favourite band but you don't need to be that defensive about them.

//Honestly man shut the fuck up with your ignorant bullshit

Well i can't say im all info about Axl and his everchanging line-up, don't take it personal we don't all keep up to date with GNR or Slash's Snakepit or Axl Roses post GNR efforts.

// Wheres some new songs then??
Umm they've actually introduced 6 new songs that they play regulary in concert.

Thanks for the info

//Oh look it's the pathetic loser who thinks he's cool because he's liked on a message board

hmm that was said by the "pathetic loser" who thinks hes cool because he isint liked on a message board, good one saul

Wow Saul you're intense dude, but I won't get caught in a slagging contest with you (partly because you are oblivious to defeat). I know that the majority isn't always correct, but even if you rebutt the criticism of several people in such a way that you have decided that you are "right" - who will you celebrate this outcome with?.....if you have in the process alienated everyone.

There's probably a case for some people laying off Saul himself, but it's all just so entertaining!

with a name like that & since you talk about him a lot, I think you are

// how come you love finck so much but don't like his current project that he's in?

just because i like something doesn't mean i have to like everything about it. there are bands i adore yet i dislike some of their songs and sometimes their attitudes or decisions. i like finck, i think hes a fantastic guitarist, but i don't have to like gunners.

Saul, are you liked anywhere?
If anyone is pathetic its you, everytime you type a message in these forums it is to insult somebody so you can shake off some of your own lame-ass insicurities on others, so you can feel like the 'big man'

what about fans that get obsessed with fans and stalk them around forums.

crazy stuff i tell you

that's cool, your opinion. But him being in the gunners is a huge part of Robin Finck now, he has given 6 years of his life working with old fat bastard, I'd say disliking them is alot more than merely disliking some of your favourite band's songs.

// what about fans that get obsessed with fans and stalk them around forums.

No it was purely by chance

or nzm members that get obsessed with other members and stalk them around forums.

// I'd say disliking them is alot more than merely disliking some of your favourite band's songs.

for reference, i don't dislike the old gnr. i do dislike axl though, and i don't like his new songs. i like finck best in nin.

// i do dislike axl though, and i don't like his new songs//

He's a cunt 99% of time, I still think he's a musical genius. You have to remember that the new songs are just fillers to keep people happy, the album will contain better stuff. Finck must really really like gn'r, knows the potential of CD or is payed very well to still be in gn'r after everything that has happened.

// the album will contain better stuff.

... what album? the thing that most bothers me about the new gnr is that there IS no album, and way too many empty promises about it coming out. will it ever come out?

// Finck must really really like gn'r

he does. it was one of his favourite bands when he was younger apparently.
do you know for sure if hes still in gnr? last i heard was just after the cancellation of the last concert and no one knew if he was quitting or not.

// do you know for sure if hes still in gnr? last i heard was just after the cancellation of the last concert and no one knew if he was quitting or not.

From all accounts all of the band is still intact, and apparently in the studio, haha.

// what album? the thing that most bothers me about the new gnr is that there IS no album, and way too many empty promises about it coming out. will it ever come out?//

I'm forever hopeful, realistically though it may not ever come out.

// he does. it was one of his favourite bands when he was younger apparently.

It must be a great feeling for him then, playing for the very band that he idolised.

//Saul is a "obsessed" Slash fan, why name yourself after him then??//

am i an obssessed shihad fan tama???
cause 11 months ago i called myself jon jr. named after jon toogood
im not defending saul here
but i find it insulting to be defined as being worthy of the same bitchyness u guys hurl at saul (i know he starst if often, and he always gives back what he recieves)
just cause i name myself after someone whos had an influence on my life musicly, if i called myself
capt cook would i be obsessessive over captain cook???
stop makin those generalisations please, cause ur hurting NZMers i don't (hope) u set out to hurt

Most of the people I know that you could say are obsessive got that way after they saw the band live, especially If it's there first concert and theres not much of a music scene where they live.
I went through a zed phase myself..... oh the horror!

http://www.rottonpear.tk ]

yeah seeing the band live is a big part. there have been many bands that i like, but its usually only after seeing them live that they get promoted to a higher catergory. it can often change which songs you like as well, as some songs go better live than on the metal. go the live show.

live show is the bread and butter of most bands/artists
its quite interesting seeing a song live, where its not so clean and washed, as on the CD
i enjoy the new shihad album, after hearing it live, cause thats why the guys choose those particular songs :)
its when bands don't do live shows, that doubts start to form over whether they're still really good, cause u can do a lot in the studio which u can't live...

// I went through a zed phase myself..... oh the horror!

I went through that phase aswell - freakin scary shit that was..
I just basically went through that because it was the first gig I had been to upfront and actually 'interacted' with them during the gig and after.
So glad i'm well over that experience!

eww the "zed phase" lets hope in a few years thats forgotten and we can all get on with our lives with no memory of it......

My take on it is that obsession is quite common, whether it be for a band, a theory, a MOTAS, a brand of car, whatever but that it is a phase in the maturing process. Take someone who has never had a band that really clicked with them, then out of nowhere there's this band X which speaks as if it could only possibly be to that person - they'll get caught up in the excitement and rate band X (no relation tyo the actual band called X) as the greatest thing ever. But for most people, another band will come along, and put band X into perspective, its just part of the musical fabric. I still get excited about new to me bands, but because I am always exploring musical nooks and crannies and have been for such a long time, no one band does it for me any more.

that must suck in a way
//no one band does it for me any more//
surely u musta had a band u really liked???
do u still like em???
i'm interested, cause u being older than moi will have been through this whole thing before
cause i love shihad, eversince i was 12, and i just feel so happy when i hear other people enjoying them like i do :D
and its something i don't feel for other bands, it comes close for a few bands but not like that
so anyway myshkin u don't get excited when a band u've liked for a while comes around???
tom wait was it??? 20 albums something like that, u seem to enjoy his music, if he came round NZ would that excite u???

Ah - I didn't make it clear. I think for obsession, there is going to be one band that is _the_ band, like Blindspott is for some on their forum, it seems. For me, I couldn't paick one band and say that one excites me more than others, because there are heaps of bands and sounds out there that excite me, its why I go to so many gigs, because they get the blood going. So no need to be sad - those who only have one band have a lot to look forward to as their horizons spread and they find there are really a zillion different ones to get you going.

your favourite band sucks.

//your favourite band sucks

I've seen that before, is it on a t-shirt or something??

the word "obsessed" has so many negative connotations attached to it. it bothers me that sometimes just because you show an interest in a band or an artist that you find particularly inspiring, ignorant people will label you "obsessed".

OBSESSED: unable to stop thinking about something; too interested in or very worried about something

My dad reckons I'm 'obsessed' with the Foo Fighters, I just like them........hmmm

yeah totally prozaco. Interest is quite different to obsession. But i guess interest BORDERING on obsession is a bit truer a statement? would you agree?

the thing that annoys me about the definition of "obsessed" is the "too interested" bit. define "too interested"? i'm sure everyone has a different opinion on it.

I think I'm obsessed with music thou

// But i guess interest BORDERING on obsession is a bit truer a statement? would you agree?

again, whos to say what is "too interested"? when does an interest become an obsession?

// I think I'm obsessed with music thou

me too tama.
i'm sure most people on nzm are in the same boat though :)

& drum, drummers & Tama Drum kits

i get labeled 'obsessive'.
oooooo i really dont like that word...it sounds bad....like being hooked on something....i prefer addicted.
i smoke but that doesn't make me obsessed with smoking...im not even addicted...bloody hell now im just waffling. sorry.

but anyway, i reckon its alright. everyone goes thru an ob....a strong interest in something...i think its cool to rad and research about stuff youre into, like a band. i do that if its someone i really like. i think its healthy. and interesting. at least you can read.

:) :) :)
