hey ian, do u still have last years ball photos???
cause i was lazy and didn't get any
may as well try to purloin a copy of ya!!!
is that the one u were putting a review of cusp in???
it's just a xeroxed 'zine that was whipped together in a week. We have some ace plans and expect this monthly mag to become seriously good over the coming months.
in wellington you can currently pick it up free from slowboat, indigo and real groovy. Once my mates distribute it in chch, nelson and akl, i will post where you can get it from.
Future issues will be distributed to more towns. If you live in a "largish" city and wouldn't mind taking care of distributing the mag once a month to cafes/music shops etc. please email distrib@hum.co.nz
i can do photos too, unfortunately my concert collection is kinda lacking at the moment though but in about four months ill be at the front of every concert i can get my big arse camera into ;)
very nice to see a very limited amount left in real groovey this afternoon ian. i think me and my friend might've grabbed the last two copies [though, i could be wrong, there may be more hiding under all the other crap on the floor]...
loved the blurb on big day out....
hopefully this thing evolves into something more colourful, the black and white doesnt really do much for the photos......
you know what i mean, stefan bitch:).....you write for me please.....bring some style to my poor writing. I'm a photographer dammit. i got no way with the words:)
// hopefully this thing evolves into something more colourful
colorful, schmulourful. oneday, but i am enjoying the freedom of B&W at the moment, and i am loving xeroxing. sometime this year hopefully it will be printed properly (offset) in Black and White, colour is way off in the distance.
i'm all for visuals mate, get some funding - bung on a colourful cover it'll be all good. if i didn't know about it, and you did show me last week i probably wouldn't have spotted it in real groovy. oh well, beggers can't be choosers eh?. then again, who is this zine for? yourself?
it'll grow at the right pace. I started small on purpose, my poorly written articles, xeroxed, small runs...to give it some room to breathe, when the time is right it will take the required step up.
Thanks heaps to all the people who have jumped forward to help...it's really exciting. I'd still love to hear from more people who want to get involved at the grass roots level.
yes yes, agreeing with you, room to breathe is all good - i dunno, i guess i'm just impatient, and a bit pedantic...but don't get me wrong mate - its great, esspecially for a first run!
*jumps forward* i'll help too, if theres something for me to do *smiles sweetly*....right....
More or less though, eh? It's certainly not a Wellington-only thang...
A Low Hum is looking great Blink. And all y'all indie magazine fans should keep an eye out for new issues of Back2Basics (hip hop), Disrupt (graffiti) and Manual (skateboarding) out soon. I've been lucky enough to preview the latter two and they're both looking fucking good.
Oh yeah... are you gonna get ALH online? It's a crime not to, if you ask me. Even a straight up click-through-the-pages issue or downloadable PDF is a good way of spreading the word.
ALH (funny, no-one has called it that yet) will definately be online soon....mainly because it is picture based and the xeroxing doesn't really do many of the pics justice.
manual was a huge inspiration for me in starting..some buds of mine from school, i have so much respect for that mag, that mag was started by photographers with amazing skate photos who needed an outlet.....a beautiful mag...
there are still some at slowboat, i checked this morn, however I'll go and refresh the welly stocks right now.
CHCH copies should be out this arvo hopefully.
// And is that little exhibition you had there still showing?
I got a copy from Echo today. got out of the shop and walked down High St with the flicking through the pages with the biggest grin on my face as recollections of my day at the Cusp came rushing back kick'n and scream'n. The photos are amazing! With a single frame, you've managed to define the essence of each performer, more astoundingly, in one split second.
Damn it Blink, you're one very talented man!
All excited, I showed it to a friend, she looked at me sideways and said, "but it's more like a school news letter". Which is why I laughed out loud when I read the editors ramblings just now.
See this is why I love New Zealand, why I love New Zealanders, people can and do take the plunge into their passions, with an 'up yours' to the rest, and come out shining.
As for the colour thing, I have to say I do like colour but I think it a beautiful coincidence of fortune that Stieglitz died in 1946, the same year processable colour film first became accessible to photographers. If he were alive today I bet he'll say the same thing - colorful, schmulourful, back in my day...
I agree with manamana
//going national straight off the bat is a BIG thing
this is from the heart "bro", and "werd" from me too ;)
Blink i was a bit slow on the uptake mate. Would there be any left in Chch ya think, and if so would it be at sounds?? Otherwise i'll by myself a copy. It sounds brilliant brother!
I picked up a copy today from Verona. I was reading it on the bus on the way home and got so caught up in it that I almost missed my stop.
I love it! It's the sort of zine I've been hanging out for. The photos are fantastic, the writing is good and the subjects covered are interesting. (Oh no, I'm running out of adjectives.)
Very nice Blink. Liked the Cusp article, especially the NZM mention. Made me smile remembering the day.
The black and white is fantastic, pity the xeroxing doesn't do it full justice, but there is no need for colour as someone mentioned above. What do people expect? A glossy magazine?
