In about March this year Pacifier, The Datsuns and The D4 all release their albums in the US. Given the promising levels of support for all three groups here and the fact that the US is the largest record-buying market (unless you add all of Europe together - which is a mistake as each country seems to have wildly different tastes) this year may see the biggest sales of albums by NZ artists ever!
The question is who, if any, of the three will make it big? I dont mean big in the U2 or Brittney sense, but something like getting a gold album in the US, lots of spins on MTV, regularly selling out venues of 1000 or more.
My pick is Pacifier. Despite the hype surrounding the Nu-Rock, Pacifier have done the groundwork here (the US) and appear to have a good base of support. They also seem to have a major label that is prepared to push them hard and are getting a fairly good level of radioplay despite the fact that the album isnt out yet (thanks to iceman_nz for the link). I think, though, that a number of their US fans may not be aware of the name change.
There is definitely interest growing for the D4 and the Datsuns here, though. I went to a sold out D4/Datsuns headlining gig in Hoboken, NJ late last year and there were many many people begging for spare tickets at the door. The D4 are playing in Boston early this year and the local Village-Voice equivalent (Boston Phoenix) put it in the top ten of future gigs to look out for.
Who will 'make it'?

I'm betting none of them will make it big until they realize the importance of the Minneapolis/St. Paul market. We're radio market #16 in the US fer chrissakes. Pay us a little attention.
I'm rooting for Neil Finn, because he IS coming here. Got my tickets already.

you can say that again! its true about the record companies tho - i think everyone realises this. what im interested in is johnnyjws comment //also seem to have a major label that is prepared to push them hard

//in what ways have you noticed a tangible push from their record company?
They had a song on a teen flick soundtrack, the song that plays over the end-credits, and they've got a single released on radio. Those two things were definitely done by a record company, and definitely give them a leg up on the Datsuns and the D4.

I think the whole 'garage rock' thing will probably be on the decline soon.
My pick would be the datsuns or maybe the d4 if they can make an impact while 'garage rock' is still getting the publicity it currently is. I think Pacifier are a band that build up their reputation and following over time. So if they make it I think it will take them a little longer...
In reply to OCPHUMAN. You gotta remember that record companies are exactly that - companies, not charities. They are gonna support acts who can make them money.
To say that they don't want you to know about bands that 'realise that there is still music yet to be discovered' is bullshit! There are a ton of bands with major label support that make great music out there.
Wilco, the flaming lips, doves, Ryan Adams, The Streets and beck have all released wicked albums in the last year. Without the support of major labels, myself or many other people would never get the chance to hear them.

I think they have pretty much made it huge in japan, and there live show will move units.
I would have to say the darkhorse in the race will be betchadupa by the end of the year. if you think back to this time last year. where were the datsuns? in the back of a van playing 2 shows a week, barely getting by. now they are sittin' pretty
I will put a stake in the ground say it ain't gonna be rubicon
Betchadupa have had a hell of a lot ...
Betchadupa have had a hell of a lot more profile and backing than the Datsuns did before they cracked the big time. They already have two EPs and an LP and they really haven't shown much sign of a New Zealand take-over, let alone internationally. They are hardly in the same position now that the Datsuns were this time last year. Before this year all I had heard of the Datsuns was a couple of plays of Super-Gyration and a tiny profile in RIP. Betchadupa are a good band but I don't think they have what it takes to make a big dent in the international market.

It would sure be nice to finally start hearing Pacifier on the radio. All I've heard of them here so far was "Run" during an NFL game as background music!

Yeah i think Pacifier will make it big. Mainly cause The Datsuns and the D4 are just the flavour of the month at the moment (even though they're both great bands) I think Pacifier will be around for a long time. And damn bulletproof's a good song!
I'd say the say The Datsuns have the ...
I'd say the say The Datsuns have the biggest chance over there, at least getting the most exposure. For starters they are the 'golden children' on Branson's label-he's put big money into them to secure the hit act he so desperately needs to keep his business afloat-as if he is going to take things in the US lightly.
Then there is the fact the Datsun's are superstars in the UK, doesn't equate to US success by any means BUT the yanks always have a close look at what's the buzz over the atlantic, ususally before deciding they hate it he he he (save the comments it's a side issue).
Then there is the celebrity endorsements Dave Grohl, Jack White on record saying they love the Datsuns, in journo land those kind of quotes are gold when profiling a new band.
A few underground US publications have already profiled the datsuns and reviewed their album. The reviews have been only lukewarm so far, but it's an achievment to even get noticed in these, especially as the album is only an import over there at this stage. So yeah thinking the datsuns have a head start in the US but in a perfect world they will all do really really well.
Oh yeah and I think the clean will outdo them all in sales on a relative scale when their anthology is released later this month without any hype.

Up till now this may well be true, although I'm not sure where you would get the stats to prove that one. I think theres a pretty good chance one of the three will break this record by the end of 2003. Also, regarding the Clean, if the lacklustre interest in them in Boston when they played in 2001 is anything to go by, I think their day is past.
