Nobody seems to want to fuck with our heads anymore! I've noticed this trend both in NZ and internationally and am wondering:
Is this a result of the "war" on terrorism, or are people simply too desensitised to be bothered being challenged by their music?
Which functioning NZ bands do YOU reckon are fucking with this theory?? (I'll show you mine if you show me yours. . . )

Theres always the debate over ...
Theres always the debate over mainstream vs alternative/underground the mainstream stuff is just following the trends and occaisonally to find the new stuff to become popular , while the alternative/underground stuff is always breaking new barriers, dunno if I can name many of the underground that are important but yea many of the NZ Bands on the axe attack are probably the best since they don't really get the reckognition they should and of course the Bnets can be good @ time
No, I don't give a fuck about ...
No, I don't give a fuck about mainstream vs. alternative/underground. I've simply noticed a lack of truly innovative music over the last year or so - be this in musical style or just goddamn scary lyrics. Bands that make you think: "What the fuck are these people taking - they're truly warped!".

Hope you don't only think that metal bands are pushing barriers, coz a lot of bands that fuse styles are pushing more uncharted territories I would say. Not that theree is anything wrong with metal, check Cripple Mr Onion.
This is from sparkchris, not green 22, I am just on his computer.
Both excellent bands - I especially ...
Both excellent bands - I especially like the distinctive sound and "catchiness" of Sativa. However, they're generic as fuck and pretty much "pulling back" to the old-school type of metal that was huge in the early 90's. This is what I've noticed - bands "pulling back" to more purist and formulaic styles that used to be popular (check out garage rock). I've actually been to a few extreme-metal gigs lately just for the hell of it and have found that to be rather drab and set-in-its-ways. One band has stood out, however: Militia. Now they're doing something a bit different . . . Never heard Cripple Mr Onion, sorry, so can't comment.
maybe its because its all been done ...
maybe its because its all been done before?and in this blank dull world we live in artists arent sure that there "different" music will be appreciated or listened to because it is to out of the square. mixing genres only sometimes works and other times just plain old sucks. i bet wed all hate to hear britney spears meets death metal guitaring with djs and rapgroups, or some of us(confused dillusional and insane bastards) may like it. so yeah i guess its a fear the records wont sell?:s
Don't give me that "it's all been ...
Don't give me that "it's all been done before" crap. That's the plaintive cry of the lazy idealist. "I'm bored with everything there is," you say, "but not willing to get off my ass, put forth a little energy and change the way it's done." It's all been done before until someone proves you wrong and does it differently.
Look at someone like Tom Waits, for example (I know he's not from NZ, but as an american I have to have something to be proud of): that man has put out twenty-some albums, each one different from any other he's done or anyone else has done for that matter.
People have been sitting around picking their asses for years complaining, "there's nothing new out there" but every time a band like Einstuerzende Neubauten or The Skeptics comes along they say, "oh, I guess I was wrong. But there's nothing ELSE new out there."
Fucking naysayers and pundits ought to just keep their mouths shut and let the creative people do what they do best. They're out there somewhere, they're just not being encouraged.

I'm a bit worried about Mr Waits, as he seems to have slowed down in recent years: his last two CD'sare from work he did 20 years ago and the Mule Variations is a kind of scrapbook of songs he's acumulated over the years. He is, however, a fabulous artist and I do hope to have an entire collection. Wish I could see him perform.
I do have an entire collection, to the ...
I do have an entire collection, to the point of being completist, and I've seen him perform live twice (one of the benefits of living in america). What a phenomenal performer. You should be able to rent Big Time at any respectable video store, there's some live (kind of) footage there.
Personally, if the man wants to relax and spend time being reclusive with his family, I won't begrudge him that. I'll happily buy up anything he puts out, new or not.

Coincidentally, for those in the know, the Historic State Theatre where I saw him perform is on the corner of 9th and Hennepin in Minneapolis. It probably wasn't such a coincidence after all.

Bull shit. But I agree with some of the other shit you are saying, NonBreed. It seems people don't want to be challenged when they go to a gig and artists have picked up on this. I'm just wondering if this is a repercussion of the world seemingly "looking inwards" after Sept 11. I sure as hell have never seen so many right-wing-christian values spouted as I have over the last year . You must see a lot of this from where you are in the States, velocity.
Fuck yeah - Tom Waits, The Skeptics. However, Tom Waits has been around since the 70's and the Skeptics were over by the early 90's. I'm talking about functioning NEW bands. Maybe I'm blind or too jaded, I don't know.

some situations don't require moshing, like the letterbox lambs gig, i was on the edge of my seat right at the back of bar bodega, totally captured by the music, i didn't get up or do anything, but i definatly wasn't relaxing!!!

//I sure as hell have never seen so many right-wing-christian values spouted as I have over the last year . You must see a lot of this from where you are in the States, velocity.
The worst thing about it here is the dangerous mix of "christian values" and patriotism. Makes people like me very nervous. Especially considering things like the passing of the Homeland Security act, which allows the US government to monitor anyone, up to and including search and seizure of property, only on suspicion of "unamerican acts". That could mean, well, the statement I just made I suppose. That could put a damper on anyone's creativity.

//I'm talking about functioning NEW bands. Maybe I'm blind or too jaded, I don't know.
I can't honestly think of any. I've been really trying, but any of the artists that have really thrilled me and set me on the edge of my seat are all... old. I mean, god bless Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart, but they just don't seem to have any contemporaries in music today. Maybe we're doomed. Maybe the revolution is moving to a different medium. Maybe painters are doing some pretty fuck-with-your-head things these days. I don't know. We're probably doomed.
I don't think we're doomed. Maybe we ...
I don't think we're doomed. Maybe we need to look harder. Maybe as artists and listeners we need to disregard the rules here and there.
Ha ha! UnAmerican acts!! That's the funniest thing I've heard all day (and quite scary now I stop to think about it). How do they prove someone is doing something unAmerican? Unorthodox ways of consuming a hamburger, perhaps? Opting for a kebab instead? Choosing Heineken over Budweiser?
Watch out what you say, velocity. The CIA are watching.
The horribly frightening thing about it ...
The horribly frightening thing about it (and THE reason it didn't pass until there was a republican majority in the senate) is that they don't have to prove a damn thing. I could be considered "unamerican" because I spend most of my time on a website devoted to NZ music, or because I've just stated publicly that the homeland security act is horribly frightening, or because I'm writing a work of fiction that has some unorthodox views of religion.

i can't believe Outkast. they're just absolutely insane ... they remind me just a little of what P Funk and Parliament and Funkadelic did to the music scene in the 70s. i only hope Outkast last and can sustain their particular, enjoyable, exhuberant madness and social commentary.
every time i hear a new song or see one of their vids, my world changes a little bit. i like bands that do that.

I was laying awake in bed this morning, stuck on the ideas of cultural stagnancy and thwarted evolution (these are things I worry about) and it struck me that a couple of years ago I saw an advertisement in our local weekly for a concert given by "Incendiary Finnish Techno-Accordionist" Kimmo Pohjonen. With a descriptor like that, how could I not go? I dragged a few friends along, thinking it would be good for a laugh, but by minute two everyone in the audience was stricken with hushed rapture. I've never seen anything like it. He made such a myriad of emotions come out of his little accordion that it nearly made me weep.
I know it was a few years ago, but it's the most recent I could think of.

I heard the best quote the other night ...
I heard the best quote the other night on the box: "People need predictability in their lives".
I know it aint that profound, but it got me thinking that maybe my generation, below me, and a couple above me, need predictability in their lives because its all, really that they cant have. Routine, sure, easy, but how hard is it to lead a predictable life? That's why no-one is fucking with our heads anymore, because a predictable song satisfies more than one that pisses you off that you cant tell where its going. And, honestly, Id prefer to go to a gig with a band when I can tell whats coming next -its not that Im imbicilic, I just need some predictability to stimulte me in a band...

Ahhh, Not Falling, what a fucking awesome track...too bad the only time it gets played on radio is the odd occasion on the Axe Attack.
Theres another song by Mudvayne I really like, dont know the name, the guy on the radio said it was from LD50 but Ive heard most of the songs on LD50 and it wasnt any of them. The song starts of quiet (but brutal-ish) then gets into the crazy bass line and stuff. The only lyric I can remember is something like "her love's...all I ever...needed"
Anyone have any idea which song it is?

Already been done - john cage - an avant garde classical composer - goes like this:
4'33" by John Cage:
A pianist comes on stage
Sits at a piano, plays nothing
(for 4'33") then leaves.

that john cage piece is great. and it's caused a bit of a stir in the world of copyright lawyers: has john cage got dibs on recorded silence?
Check out Mike Batt who had to pay cage a 6-figure sum when he was accused plagiarising "4'33" for his own piece "A One Minute Silence"

There is no way that he would have been ...
There is no way that he would have been ordered to pay this money if he'd pushed to a hearing - he didn't copy anything other than the basic idea of having some silence - there was no "work" to be copied. Plus, I heard somewhere (I don't think it was here) that it was even't a piano not playing that Batt recorded, it was a completely different instrumen, a guitar I think.
Wonder if John Cage was inspired by John Lennon's most minimal work - he released a B-side which the engineer had forgotten to record any music onto. One reviewer apparently took it seriously and appluaded Lennon for his new minimalist approach to musicianship.
I don't think he was even ordered to ...
I don't think he was even ordered to pay up -- he did it of his own free will. Bit of a publicity stunt by the sounds of it.
There was, apparently, a simulataneous performance of the works while the court case was taking place to establish the level of copying. The result was, according to the legalminds website: "inconclusive".
