ok I saw you guys last night and...
The band has potential but your vocalist is terrible. I won't call him a singer because he can't sing. He is holding you back. Get him some lessons or loose him. Honestly.
Sorry for being so harsh, I've been watching a bit of American Idol lately and your vocalist really does need help.
The new song of yours is cool, sped up Tool, nice.
I think you might be judging our roarer from the wrong viewpoint though, man. Sure... his technical ability isn't the best, but it isn't about that. He has passion and power in abundance... we're punks at heart, dude.
nah sorry eddie, but i think stefan is right. The prob for me wasn't so much his singing ability, but that he didn't seem to be singing the music you guys were playing. Does he even understand what your influences are.
you're not a metal band.....or are you?
Constructive criticism is all good. Yup, Billy can't sing... all of us are aware of this, probably especially Billy. He's getting trained by one of welly's biggest stage personalities currently :P And you should hear the difference between him now and then!
Our first gig was Billy struggling to not lose his voice, now he's actually finding a style. (One I like a lot!) I can appreciate that to people not in the band it would just sound lke a guy who can't sing, but to me it's my friend who's waay better than he was two gigs ago, trying really hard and actually making headway.
I really think, heartfeltedly here, that Billy's going to be a really excellent frontman and vocalist some day.
yes hello, my name is facility and i am new, yes. i see idle faction play on tuesday for my first time and was really impressed. it gets me down to think that a band can't play on a tuesday night at indigo, which is designed to be a low key event for up and coming bands with out having to deal with unneccessay critisim....... i'd like to know if the people doing the critising are willing to put them selves on the line in front of a barely full bar and dance around like a crazy, yes. we should be supporting our local bands not dissing them before they have even had a change to mature/grow/develop themselves musically, me think. so lets just sit back relax and enjoy the music, or fuck off.....
But the feedback from people is always appreciated - good and bad... The fact that those people who had negative things to say (which is fair enough) put them in a positive way is actually a great endorsement of their support...
It's hard being on stage, let alone a Tuesday night - I have complete confidence that we'll keep on evolving and continue to enjoy ourselves massivley (which is really all I care about).
I must admit it was quite a nice turn out for a Tuesday - the last two had been real quiet with no bands playing...
Just for the record Stefan - you didn't come across as condecening (IMHO) and in fact provided some good feedback which was refreshingly honest without being negative.
I just wana know - do I hit the drums hard enough?!?! :-)
Personally I think its a steep learning curve for him... having listened through the recording of the gig it showed 2 main things for me...
- He does indeed need more practise in regards to pitch and melody, however that can be learnt through practise and perserverance.
- He has a wonderful roar, which is actually one of the things which I was hoping.
We haven't been in a position where he's been actually been able to hear himself often in practises (we tend to be loud and under amplified on the vocals) so that in itself is a downpoint.
As Eddie said we're not really in it for a professional level (as can be evidenced by the very laid back approach to gigs and practises) and I'm quite happy to let people slide into their own comfortable areas. I actually have confidence that given time all will start to sound more 'right'.
Don't get me wrong, the feedback is actually majorly appreciated (even more so for being honest with us!). Time will tell though...
As for influences - I don't think they count for jack shit... I know my influences are heaps different to the rest of the band, and we haven't really tried to actually engineer what we're gonna sound like. I think there is a certain amount of metal in there, with a punk attitude and a wall of sound kinda approach. I like the term 'Shouty Rock'.
Re : american idol - I can't stand 99% of the 'singers' who audition on that show... Each to their own...
I think we're 'Shouty Rock' (tm) - thats as close to a gnere as I want to get :-)
I'd jump around more on stage, but you know I think my drumming would suffer for doing so... I need to bend my back more into it like I do on Hey Society though...
i really wanted to jump off the stage and dance in the moshpit with chris etc... didn't know if my cable would reach without unplugging my guitar though.
also, last time i did that, the goth put me in a headlock. i thought, 'hey i can't breathe! keep playing.' then 'hey i can't see! keep playing. he'll let go soon.' and then 'hey am i still conscious? not sure. '
then he let go and daryl finished the solo in 'breed' and billy came back from vomiting outside and we did the last chorus. well orchestrated, i thought.
its very very hard to pitch yourself to your band when you have no foldback or cant isolate a melodic line. its even harder when practises are amped on the music and you have no way of hearing youself. its easy to strain your voice trying to top the music, and give yourself a headache trying to pitch properly.
with reference to another forum, i go to see idle faction because theyre mates. and the last couple of gigs ive gone because its a joy to see a band progress and bind as fast as idle faction have been. musically, theyre tight and energetic, and they clearly love what theyre doing.
im a complete vocal nazi. billy drives me fucking crazy with his pitch, or lack thereof. but his stage presence is undeniable. hes coming out of himself and giving more to the audience, and he really believes what hes singing. i think thats prolly cos of his work on the lyrical side of things. if his diction was better, people could actually hear what hes so passionate about singing.
but then, he might lose some of his spontaneity. im going to sit tight and see how it all turns out.
He does indeed!!! It seems that the majority of people would be happier if billy wasa samall blond boy with a cute voice singing about his lost love (s). NO!!! I like it.... it is refreshing to have a vocalist with something to say... take a moment next yalll and listen cus hes a smart fellow.
Secondly, if music was perpertrated by people only with contemporarily defined talent we all would have missed out on some of the greats.... ie. sex pistols (simplistic music with HIDEOUS vocals); bob dylan (fucked voice)... ect.....
Sorry I missed the gig dudes... twill be there next time.
