This year the situation surrounding British Christmas number 1 single is different. Y'all remember "Popstars"? Well this year theres been another series of that called "Popstars: The rivals". The idea behind it is that two groups would be formed, one a boy band, the other a girl band. Each is signed to separate record labels and each has released a single with the idea being that the winner will be the one whose single is the Christmas #1.
The boyband, (or "vocal harmony group" as they apparently prefer to be called) is One True Voice. Their single is called "Sacret Trust". Please, pass the sick bag.
The girl group is Girls Aloud and their song is "Sound of the Underground" and it's everything that a good pop song should be. If you don't like pop, then you probably won't like it, but I love pop and I love it. I want it to go to #1, and I have instructed my brother in London to buy a copy of it on my behalf.
But then, out of leftfield comes the Cheeky Girls. Two Transylvanian twenty-year-old twins, they audtioned for "Pop Stars" and another similar show, but didn't make it. That didn't deter them, and they ended up releasing the "Cheeky Song". I don't like it, but I think I would have really liked it when I was eight years old.
But yeah, when's the last time there was a crazy novelty song from a New Zealand band? Double J and Twice the T's "She's a Mod/Mod Rap", perhaps?

According to CD:UK Girls Aloud went to number 1 - the official chart is announced tomorrow afternoon [sunday] on Radio 1 I doubt anything will change though. It was the first time I'd heard their song (as I've been avoiding Fame Academy & Pop Stars - The Rivals for fear of slipping into a coma) and I didn't like it. I like some Pop. But not that. I felt there was an element of deja vu with the way they looked as well - one of them could have been Posh Spice, another has red hair (ok, so it looked like it was out of a bottle, but its red all the same), another has frizzy hair, one looked remarkably like a thin Baby Spice and - most scary of all - I swear one of them sounded just like Sporty Spice.
At the same time I don't get what Pete Waterman was on about (column in the Daily Express saying how he was going for a song like something the Beatles would have done, with One True Voice!!). He must have lost his touch - One True Voice were worse. Much worse. And they can't dance either. At least the girls could dance. In fact, the boys barely had a grip of basic co-ordination.
Not that I was watching you understand....
Nice to see both Pete Waterman [One True Voice] & Louis Walsh [Girls Aloud] have descended to the level of claiming that session singers were used on each others records. Apparently the girls were getting more airplay, and while there were a lot of screams in the audience for One True Voice (perhaps those were just screams of fear) the girls got more clapping/squealing etc from the crowd.
I wasn't watching it. Honestly...
Re the cheeky girls song - I think that was the song that was written by their mother for them. Make of that what you will...

She was actually number 1 in the UK & for a fat person (no offence) she represented hard so I give big ups to her for coming out with her beautiful character, voice & size.
