New underrated/ un heard of bands and preformers

Operation rolling Thunder : EP coming out soon. Tour in july with rawer. Amazing band

Palace at 4 am: EP coming out soon too i think. Maybe some of you saw them support the clean at old bodega? amazing improvised drone beauty

Hannah Simpson: the most amazing solo performer i have ever seen in my life. She plays at the blue note on cuba most thursday nights.

Captain sergent major: wick band i have seen twice. Dont know when they play.

kiama: a Wellington based sonic band you all should be hearing lots from as Ricky is a master of sonic youth guitar playing.

krin: nice pop rock band from Auckland who came second at the acid tests.

yokel ono: hamilton band who is magical according to everyone i have talked to about.

xanadu: seem to be blown out of proportion in auckland but totally unknown anywhere else.

the shrugs: going to be bigger than the beatles.

onanon: wonderful dunedin sonic pop rock

kahu: tristan from HDU solo show . Playing soon i hear in napier.

slavetrader: i hear they rock.

this list can go on forever. add your own........

Forums: BOTB,

I forgot a very important one:
the hiss explosion: just put a great album out on Arclife. True minimalism.

and just because i am adding bands:

photonic: heavy metal math rock from auckland

been told hiss explosion are now a force to be reckoned with........3 piece now. huge sound.

but wait theres more:

sleepers union: simon from the subliminals excellent electronic project

conray: famous dunedin sound man (not naming any names because he would hate me) electronic project.

Wrong white crowd: auckland hip hop who will probably be very famous.

South kill : what i heard was amazing.

aesthetics: people who know them know them. But more should.

Fuck why not add one more to that already wonderful list:

The fanatics: tom and warren from big blocks wicked new band.

Slipstream. don't know much about them (they might actually be famous and I may just be ignorant) saw them do a live recording for Rdu with Degrees.K a week or two ago. great vocals.

Slipstream will be playing again at the Dux this friday.

yeah, i saw them play at ReFuel in Dunedin a coupla months back. they were very good ... good melodious overdrive ... i've heard that they're better ("more elemental, less finicky") than Degrees k ...

*add your band*

lol

Mustard

the addition of Tim Driver on Keys is nothing short of a masterstroke.
hopefully Southern Amp slot does them some favors.

this is authentic music. I almost feel young listening to it. Sometimes that is the most you can dare for.

Heka - Dunedin; exhuberant noise chime, landscapy topographical hallelujah music. forever working on an album, not sure when it's due out.

Sentimental Plastic - Hamilton, though i think many members are Auckers or Welly way. NZ needed a Wire-type band, and these guys are it, but a lot lot lot more. if you ever drive around the south island, put this in your stereo and you'll be a fan for life.

Nathan and thuh Muntaz - Dunedin; world famous in this town, and too effing lazy to go anywhere else. i admire that. Always catchy, always dodgy, always offensive, always very very insightful and clever. always drunk. have released an album, but without the stage shenanigans and threatening-but-alluring dancing girls, you'd only be glimpsing 1% of what Nathan and his crew are about.

How could i have forgotten heka!!!!!!!
Heka were/are my favourite band who were playing in Dunedin when i was there.

I think david kilgour's solo stuff is totally underrated outside of dunedin. But he is not exactly unknown is he so i'll shut up.

oh my god!!!
The zoo polluters: john whites punk rock band. Playing in wellington soon with *cough*rawer
*cough*. I dont really like mestar. I love his solo stuff. But this band is amazing.

lol! nice one stu, Go Mister Lemon!! /m/

Cripple Mr Onion

these aren't necessarily new but all are under rated
john white from mestar has a solo album that can't be beat
also greg malcolm and surfing ussr
mountains of murray
'orkid
fuce
clowndog
the chch scene is full of 'em

I agree.

ChCh seems to b pumpin out awesum as acts. Orkid and Clowndog are just..... Awesum!

I'm sure Andoru of all people will not mind a side question, i have never managed to remember to ask this question of spanky himself............... but whats the deal with calling clowndog a chch band?

good question aka

They live in CHCH so there for they are a CHCH band.

what about their roots man?

Clowndog are originally from Nelson, and actually moved back to Nelson end of last year

Sola monday: wonderful album.

hallow grinders: awesome surf rock.

One more:

Odessa: excellent wellington band. funktastic

Suka.

their playing again dont you know.

i want to get them up here.

Hey what about that other Chch band Nosittap! they're just fab.. tee hee

ahem.. btw.. who tunes into the axe attack on Sunday nights?? I'm wondering how much of an audience the show gets?! damn good show I might add!

I listen to the axe attack

Check out Tourist - (my sisters boyfriends band) they usually play gigs in Auckland

http://www.touristsound.com ]

mmm axey goodness....Im a fan!

Nosittap we're on the 2nd to last Axe attack this year... any one hear us? Feedback?

I'm loving OdESSA Welli-funk, Pierced-crazy spacey/eastern rock, Wishbone-industrial grind, Not Quite Right-finally a bit of originality in punk.

sorry there
i knew the dogs were leaving chch but i think i beat them to it
they shaped their sound a bunch in chch anyways
chch is what made them what they are
same as how the feelers were a chch band until they went to auckland and turned shit
now noone in chch calls them a chch band, right?
does that make sense?

ps (off thread-so shoot me [if you can find me])
d4 played in new york last night annd play vancouver in about a month
also
wilco are playing in nz in january
i caught them in austin in september, they were brilliant

I can't wait for Wilco at the BDO.

Back on topic - At the risk of committing blasphemy, maybe some of you should go check bands.co.nz for the Birchville Cat Motel interview. I can vouch for this guys suburbanite existence.

R.I.P

come and see hannah simpson play at the blue note tonight (thursday)

I wasnt really sure where to post this so i'll just chuck it in here...

Can anyone tell me anything about the welly band Five Car Pile Up?? I met alex when she used to live in melbourne and would be interested to see/hear them...

Heard a Five Car Pile Up track for the first time today - it was fantastic - classic rock riffs with an interesting female vocal. It was on the brand new compilation out from fast food - Rock and Roll Is my Only Salvation: an awesome bunch of rock songs. I hope there will be more, and wish I'd seen the Five Car Pile Up on Two Lane Blacktop gig - wonder if they were all Datsuns?:

Is there a woman called Rita in 5 car pile up? I think I saw them play once with Police Lucipher in Welly

Yes Rita is in that band, she also used to be in an all girl band in Chch called 'Snort'

divad egneb?

im in the nzmusic chat room if you wish to talk...... http://www.jpilot.com/products/jirc/demo1.html

as in, reganam eht ??

The Ho' Dogs. Garage Rock menaces...

The Black Panthers.
Yet more dirty rock'n'roll.

mountains of murry - supreme noise with balls of a big fuck off dog,

any one remember nothing at all?

Hell yes, back at orientation 98 or something... dirty as rock n roll, they were on first and played to a pretty cold crowd but they converted the whole room by about song 3. There was this really cool moment where the guitarist and bass player were rocking out right beside the drummer, then he stood up with them while he was still playing and rocked out with them at the same time, never missing a beat... awesome.

slipping tongue from rotovegas are good
