ads you just don't understand

okay this has been bugging me for a while. theres an ad on tv for vodafone or nokia or something like that where a girl is sitting on the toilet and her phone starts to ring. anyway for some reason she has to pick up her phone without using her hands.

did i miss something? is she sitting on her hands? did she pee on her hands? is this common practise?

Forums: The Bar,

Prozaco, that ad has been annoying the bejeezus out of me too!

Someone in my flat said that her thumbs are worn out from texting, so she can't use her hands for anything. That's quite scary if you think about it.

I hope one of you brilliant people out there can enlighten us !

yeah i heard that too, i think its supposed to b kinda a joke that if she, a cellphone addict, wont even use her hands to answer her phone, hows she gonna manage when shes finished on the toilet? its definately a dumb ad.

I wanna join the club of people who are confused with this ad. It's for Boost mobiles btw. I still don't get it. Tama's dish-washing one below is in the same series, There is an explanation to that, that fits (about her texting too much & having sore fingers) but I still don't understand where the toilet comes in.

//There is an explanation to that, that fits (about her texting too much & having sore fingers)

i can honestly say i would never ever have come to that conclusion by myself.

i've just emailed boost mobile and asked them what the hell they were thinking when they came up with this ad campaign.

I'm so sure I saw an ad where that was explained. I think theres a whole series & one of the earlier ones tells us that. But still, its lame.

How new are these?? I haven't seen that toilet one yet.
Tonight was the first time I saw that dish-washing one

There's something really strange about that ad.

It's not just that she's taken the phone into the toilet with her (she might be expecting an urgent phone call or text message), but when she bends down to pick up the phone it appears to have been located on her legs. I think if I were to take my phone into the toilet, I wouldn't put it on my legs.

maybe she's got a phone fetish??

im surprised that this ad is causing confusion, given that it shows a bandaged hand at the end of the ad. they've done them kind of shitty, but it still gets the message across (or so i thought)

Can't say I remember seeing that, but I normally day dream when the ad's are on
I'm just sick of seeing those drink & driving ads, hmmm

yeh im sick of those drink driving ads as well, considering tyou CAN legally drink and drive, provided that your under 80mg/100mls or if yoru under 20 less than 30mg/100mls, they should define it as DRUNK driving.

I Actually dont mind the one where those 20-something hippies are stopped at the check-point on the way to that party, very amusing watching hippies in an ad highlighting a serious issue

I don't get those ads such as that one with the guy coming out of the shower and he slips over and gets knocked out cold, and that one with the lady going to fetch the cereal off the glass table and falling over it are just weird!

errr.... i think they're supposed to promote home safety.

more like promoting careless home safety

And since that 2nd one is meant to be ad, don't you think the cameramen/director should of help her??

i think they're employing the same kind of shock effect that the drink driving ads do

Well I change the channel when they come on.

Those ads start off like regular ads, one a pretend ad for a snack bar, the other for hot water. Then just as we've been lulled into a kind of "oh, not another crappy ad" kind of mood, suddenly it's twisted. The woman trips over and smashes into the glass coffee table, the guy in the shower slips and cracks his head. It's taking the normal happy world of an advertisement and making it a dark and dangerous place.

the first time i saw the ad with the lady falling into the glass table i couldnt stop laughing for an hour.

trixie, ummm, I think you need some help

nah im with trixie. they are some funny ass ads

I agree, I think they're funny. (I'm sure I said this on the crappy Space forums ages ago)

Wouldn't it be funny if the guys towel flew off when he falls over? 'Cos that's what I was expecting the first time I saw it.

& the ladder one just looks so fake it's funny. Even the first time I saw it I knew what would happen, he seems to purposely wobble the ladder & accidentally on purpose make it fall.
(Probably to scam ACC into giving him a huge pay-out)
(Hey! Yeah! wouldn't those ads be better suited to educating people about making honest claims only?)

or maybe just dont have a glass table in your house

Those ads with Havoc and Newsboy about Earthquake safety don't exactly show everyone getting encapsitated under their houses and apparently its suppose to be promoting Earthquake safety by a simple phrase "FIX FASTEN FORGET".

Got to admit, that ladder one is kinda funny

yeah mega. dont know how you could say that they are making false claims..... they are actually injured lol. ACC aren't gonna try and claim that the chick fell thru the glass table on purpose :P

i wonder how they did those ads?
good call with the jason english lessons as well

Maybe not the glass table chick, but definately the ladder one. As I said, he wobbles the ladder to make himself fall, so he can spend a few weeks/months/years off work & not have to do anything to receive ACC benefits. I'm soooo onto him!
*looks suspicious*

I just saw one of a woman putting her head into a sink of dish wash water, wtf??
I think it had something to do with cell phones too (it was a very short ad with kids singing)

or the ad where that lady bashes her head into the side of the wall to show the "consumer" the stuff behind it - a gibb ad maybe?....i dunno......

Yeah is that the same woman as the one thats on all the Briscoes ads?? I hope so - she annoys the hell outta me and the idea of her banging her head into a wall almost makes it better...

nah, I think that's Rima Te Wiata ... kinda crazy assed comedy she'd do.

I hate those Vodafone 'Booty' ads

It's obvious what they are about, however I just find them to be irritating, and crap.

i hate them toooooo, i hate them so much that i have never once stayed on the channel and watched the add straight through - i've always flicked.

which ones are they? vodafone have a lot of ads at the moment it seems

Er, there's a series of them

However they all end with the "Booty's in the house y'all"

they need to DIE

hahah i just heard one on the rock..... terrible!!!

speaking of ads on the radio, has anyone heard the soulmates ads? there's two i like:

"Hey i got home last night from my over exaggeration classes and guess how many messages i had from soulmates dating service?"
"how many"
"11............................ million."
hahaha ok just the way seh says it really cracks me up.
and the other one with the rap song and the westie guy is putting words into it, man its great.

Yeah that rap one is funny :)

//However they all end with the "Booty's in the house y'all"

i heard some NZdj's mixed that into a rap song, yuckk..

I hate those BK ads - some semi balding guy jumping around at the camera singing "suck it, suck it, suck it and see.. suck it and what the prize could be!" at the camera - grrr THAT is irritating.

FUCK
i dont believe they actually made that ad. its like a reject from the 80's ( and thats baaaaaaad). somebody deserves to be shot.

also can somebody add their opinion to this. me and a mate were arguing about whether the man and woman in the maccas ad (the one with the two aforementioned applying makeup/shaving in their respective cars and laughing) are strangers or are they husband and wife. your opinions please....

//are strangers or are they husband and wife

i always assumed they were strangers. maybe theres an underlying message that maccas breakfast helps busy single people get laid - everyone loves to use sex to sell stuff afterall!

Hehe Twink, you keep making me laugh :-)

I always tried to imagine how shamed that guy would be.........

//its like a reject from the 80's

THAT, my dear, is EXACTLY what i was going to post.......great! lol.

//also can somebody add their opinion to this...............and wife. your opinions please....

they are strangers. that is how i interpreted it.

i hate those "JASONNNNNNNNNNN" maccas ad. they are dumb.

I originally had this theory. "Suck it and see" sounds like "sucker MC", so in the ad they've got an almost textbook case of a sucker MC (the dorky, balding white guy) and got him to do the rap. Now how many layers of irony is that?

But now that I've seen it a few more times, I have this feeling that it's not actually ironic, it's just a bad ad. I think it might be an Australian ad (lots of ads we see in NZ originate from Australia). That would explain a few things.

ahah that ad is pretty screwed, and to think hes like yelling and just telling you to "suck it! suck it and see!!" it kind of scares me...

I find most JASSSSSON! ads annoying, but I kinda like the English lessons one. Made me giggle.
"hey!"
"hey!"
"who are you?!"
"who ate you?!"
"JAAASSSON!"
"JAAASSSON!"

heh heh

I must say I liked that ad, It is an 80's reject and that's what makes it so hip and funky with the whole 80's revival. It gets stuck in your head so well.

I hate that ad about shaving moose and the 2 couples are out eating and 1 guy's stroking his leg on his wifes leg (who uses the moose) and the other dude does the same to his wife and has a disgusting look on his face and his wife turns to the other lady and she goes "I think I need to use your moose"
then they all giggle..
IT IS SOO FUCKING CHEESEY IT SUCKS!!!! when can they get rid of it?? arrrgghh

i was like "wtf? what moose ad?" until i realised you meant mousse. lol.

that ad and the other shaving ad [the veet one] where they're on that 'two week safari....'....dicks

hehe, yeah sorry... i didn't realise the spelling until you pointed it out!!
what's with the shaving ads these days? craazy
