Is Ska Really Dead...

I heard, i saw, i came.
Is ska, still kicking. Other than No Doubt, which is blah (in my opinion)

Forums: The Bar,

is no doubt even considered ska anymore?

Not after Tragic Kingdom, they seem to be now more poppy with a bit of reggae mixed in, yuk.

Sublime they were a good ska band!!

It's pretty poppy huh...? yes it is.

There's still some pretty good ska coming out of the States these days (yes, I know this is NZMusic.com). It seems to be the one underground genre that's really thrived here in my town. there's even a class at the university on the music theory and history of ska.

Rancid, Reel Big Fish, etc.... The local scene is small, but has a dedicated following... which makes sense, because Ska is really fun.

I thought Rancid was punk not ska

it's punk ska

I thought it was ska-core

They are dirty punks who play at ska.

I'm waiting for my dirty ska punk friend to learn to play the bass in Wanganui, so he can come back and our ska band can take off. All we need is every instrument except for guitar and bass. There's always room for one more ska band.

dude,

I thought the little punk was singing not playing.... go baby dan!!!

Ska gets tarred - over by the punk paint. Genres don't disappear, they get painted over with other names.

Ska is out there you just need to keep looking alot of the 'post punk' or new age punk whateva you like to call it do the odd good ska track I quite liked Goldfingers cover of the old Duran Duran hit Rio, you just gotta keep looking mate.

Ska is by no means dead, especially in NZ.

Look at the evidence:over the last few years a slow but steady rise in the number of ska/reggae/dub/offbeat/etc bands hitting the airwaves. not only do they hit them, but they stay there. bands like the Black Seeds, Katchafire, Salmonella Dub Etc. Then theres the everpresent growth in NZ punk with bands such as Kitsch, Brubeck, Sommerset etc.

Ska is more like a hibernating Jackyl, waiting for the right time to awaken and tear apart and lay into the soft underbelly of NZ music.

So what if MTV says ska is dead, what the hell do they know?... when was the last time they stopped plugging anything other than Creed and Eminem?

we'll see how dead ska really is at Ska-B-Q
