Hey, who went to one (or both) of the recent Sleater-Kinney shows in Auckland?
I went to the Saturday night show and - oh my God - I had such a good time. I was just so much fun and all the hardcore S-K fans up the front were having such a great time.
And I wrote a review about it.

Everyone disses Auckland. It's not so bad if you look around for the right places!
The indie/rock scene up here ain't too shabby either.

One of the plusses of living in the AK Town is that you don't hear so many UB40 tribute bands.

tclak i was in auckland for 4 months and not once did i see a decent indie rock band.
All i saw was a sprawlling suburb.
Meterman were good the one time they played. But they have since played like a thousand times here anyway.

Only downside was the constant jazz and UB40 tributes.

Ah, sunny Kingsland. It's not like the rest of the place . . .
You really should come over for beers (lots of the fuckers) with me and Finchy, Andrew.
Next time you come up to this city of Shihad tributes, maybe . . .

Was the "huge fun" not being had in Auckland?
Oh and the world sux....just thought I'd throw that in there.

I'm sure Auckland city has something good... but I've never heard of it.
We wandered through the entire city centre... found NOTHING of interest... drove to the Kings Arms and slept in the car outside until the bands started.
The Huge Fun was Sleater-Kinney (god they were good), and Fake Purr. Xanadu, I think, need to take that bloody keyboard of the singer. The same sound in EVERY song gets to be a bit much.

I like auckland I really do. I just got in a bad bad bad pattern when i was there.
I am up next week as a matter of fact. I will drop you a line. :)

tclak, dude, can i ask, what is wrong with Jazz. Without jazz, rock and roll would never exist and we might still be listening to classical music, what is all good too. Jazz, at least, good jazz, is none too bad buddy...and the sooner u realise that the better.

I was there, front row central, until some little plonker came up and picked a fight with various people - he even got S-K to stop and ask if there was a fight or love match going on. Moving back a step or two seemed expedient - but I was still jumping around, having fun. Loved the energy, of the band and of the crowd. I'm not that familiar with their back catalogue as the only album I'd heard in full was One Beat - but am definitely going to get some more: in fact bought Hot Rocks before coming home. Gave it a good listen as I spent 9 hours on a feckin' bus!
Thank maybe I recognised you Robyn, but wasn't sure, so didn't say hi. Same for trixie - who I saw on Space once.
The one puzzling thing about the event was the second support band - they got quite a few girlie screams. Their first few songs were crap, the last few they seemed to get more into it and did a few quite OK songs, but not screamworthy. The singer - well, I am no expert on hot young guys, but he didn't seeem to have anything special to me: what was going on? What's worse - all their fans disappeared from the front as soon as the band did.

i went on the friday night, and i saw the first band, Fake Purr were kinda quirky to me, i liked BEARWOLF!
i missed Xanadu but i heard there was some technical difficulties or something?
but sleater kinney... they fuckin rocked!!!! they were totally into it, the atmosphere was great. for the first 5 minutes of their set i couldnt really move because i was in awe. There was so much energy coming from them i even got into the songs i didnt know. they blew me away, especially in 'Oh!' everyone should hear this song coz its very good and soo damn catchy. Janet's drumming is brilliant, Carrie danced around and did crazy things with her legs and Corin was just brilliant. i was front row on Carrie's side, i hope i didnt deafen her with my "cheers" not screams :P.i would of gone and seen them again on the saturday if i hadnt felt ill that day, because they would be worth another $25 to see.To be honest, and i know it might sound like im overexaggerating but im not... Sleater Kinney are thee best band i have seen live all year!! and that says a lot considering the number of bands i have seen live this year. i dont know what gig could impress me anymore after sleater kinney.

It wouldn't be quite right for me to say this was the best band of the year - because its hard to compare a rock night with a drum'n'bass one, for example - but as I left, I had the feeling that the last gig I went to and left feeling so good was the Tomahawk one back in about March - similar vibe to the two I reckon.

Tomahawk was the first time I EVER walked out of an international gig part way through. It was one of the worst gigs I have ever been to. Patten was a complete dickhead - teh sheep jokes were just offensive and unnecessary....
Bring on the "I LOVE MIKE" flames! hahahah

I left the Tomahawk gig after the, uh, second encore. I think there was another one, but I was just in a weird kind of mood, it had been a weird day and I just wanted to leave. All I can remember is Mike Patton saying "Stein... lager. Stein... lager!"
I like the Tomahawk CD, though.

Yeah! that's right - that was offensive too... what a prat
I liked what I heard of the CD too... and I really like the other project he was involved in this year - Lovage (with Dan The Automator aka Prince Paul (Handsome Boy Modelling School)) ...
but I digress...

Cheapest place for One Beat in NZ is probably smokecds.com at $28, although there's post of $3.50. Ah - just remembered - Borders had it for $29.95. Otherwise look at options like chaosmusic.com or sanity.com.au in Australia - that's where I got my copy from.

Sleater-Kinney is the name. You're in Auckland, right? Best place would be Borders music, as it happens. They have One Beat (the latest), Hot Rock (the one before the latest) and one other - check them out and if you like them its $30 .

wow...just heard some sleater kinney - very very awesome. i can't believe i'd never eheard of them till you all started raving about them. One thing though, do you pronounce the name as it is spelled or is there some other way to say it? im just not too sure. but yea...truely awesome!
I'd always thought it was "slater" ...
I'd always thought it was "slater" kinney, but then I was listening to KEXP, a radio station just up the road from their home town in Seattle, which called them "sleeter"-kinney. Given that the band is named after the intersection of Sleater and Kinney streets in Seattle, I've gone with the KEXP pronunciation. Don't actually recall their name being mentioned on the night - maybe all the letters are silent and they're pronounced "great music".
