haha & i'm not talking about the Datsuns & the D4, either - where's the local equiv. of So Solid Crew & assorted etc, especially since our MC traditions tend to draw from the UK-Jamaican whatevah more than US rapping? Y'know, it'd really shove some future into the the Wellington roots sound & that, & Auckland is fucking /primed/ for this sort of thing.

Sorry mAtt, "Garage" was commandeered ...
Sorry mAtt, "Garage" was commandeered by the emerging UK minimalist hiphop scene a few years ago, quite a while before "Garage Rawk" started getting popular again. Started with Craig David *cough*, but then the sarf London massif rescued the genre with So Solid Crew, Oxide & Neutrino, and (for those of us who would prefer to avoid the more aggressive Brixton "punched-that-bitch-in-the-mouf-cos-she-wouldn't-sleep-wiv-me-dya-know-wa'-I-mean?" gangsta wank) The (delectable, delightful, only mildly degenerate) Streets.
Here endeth the lesson.
I too would be quite interested in seeing some kiwi garage bands, although the Welli dub scene will remain dear to my heart.

I am looking forward to the artist that unifies the two genres to produce what must surely be called "Double Door Garage"

And while I'm on the topic, I always thought that UK Garage should have really been called Bedroom. I mean, garage rock originated with blokes playing their instuments in their garage right? So surely a genre that developed with blokes playing with pro-tools in their bedrooms should be called Bedroom?
Of course, that's a shit name, so they took the name of the toughest room - the garage.

it got worse than that - a while ago, there was a genre of UK brit-pop called Bed-sit ... Cornershop was part of that ... basically it was all about anorakkers sitting around crafty pop gems on acoustic guitars, then finding a band to make it louder ...

//the reinjection of pop(ulist) elements (sort of like a meta lover's-rock move) into the jungle/'ardkore massif
yeah, technically you're right, but from a cultural viewpoint, there was absolutely no hiphop in the UK a few years back, and I think Garage evolved to fill that gap.
//>>started with Craig David *cough*...if by that you mean, "first crossover hit (if you ignore "Sweet Like Chocolate")", yes.
Dunno, probably... I was in the UK when Craig David became popular and he was the first artist *cough* that I heard referred to as part of the "newly-emerging" Garage genre. He definitely preceded So Solid Crew in popularity. It took me a while to work out that Garage was actually pretty good.
As for bedroom music - the dance music ...
As for bedroom music - the dance music press does talk about bedroom music quite a bit, basically to cover all dance genres but before a particular musician's work has actually hit the dancefloor - because until then, its never really been heard out of the musician's bedroom.

Here's me thinking that UK garage was a development from house/dance. So - its a form of hiphop but somehow different? How is it different from what people like Dubious Brothers, Unique, Dr Strangefunk are doing?

. . . my version - the reinjection of pop(ulist) elements (sort of like a meta lover's-rock move) into the jungle/'ardkore massif as drum'n'bass became a elitist white joyless "breaks science" jazzwank misogynist whatevah - garage has (slightly) lowered bpm from jungle, more vocal manipulation (nice crossfertilization with US r'n'b post-Timbaland) & so on. The penchant for MCing has only recently recently come in (dancehall, hip-hop elements) - originally, speed garage was Armand-Van-Helden stylee.
>>started with Craig David *cough*
if by that you mean, "first crossover hit (if you ignore "Sweet Like Chocolate")", yes. otherwise, it's like saying punx0r started with Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" (not that there's anything wrong with BI or CD, tho).

& "the Welli dub scene will remain dear to my heart." - anyone want to start a thread on the scene, & whether it's too complacent/self-congratulatory? (I mean, 'nuff respect etc, but I dunno, something's not /right/ . . .)

(I mean, not to downplay the whatevah of wotsisname in So Solid Crew, but it just keeps on getting brought up & brought up - personally, I've, uh, more problems with the burn-dem-batty-boy/stomp-on-chi-chi-man preoccupation in dancehall & . . . heh, this really isn't the place, etc).
