im goin to the letterbox lambs gig 2nite and i'd like to know what the fuss is all about???
could people in the know please xplain within the next 3 hrs???
i didn't think it was that big, u must not see very many, ummmm where was it i saw one today, thats it in the korn video :S the guy had a huge cross...
i always thought it was average, i got it in samoa, and trust me, they had BIGGER jesus's there!!!
yeah well i guess im not quite up 2 it then aye ;)
whats ur fasination with my cross???
hang on a minute, why does every1 get edgy around me when i have my cross on???
is it cause u guys think i'm goin to preach to u, and be all hard out, missionairy styles???
that pisses me off, cause im not hard out religious, im pretty laid back really, whats wrong with showing u belive in god, and goin to gigs???
well because of a stupid prior arrangement, i only got to see about 6 songs, but what i saw was the sweetest sounding, fullest beautiful shit around. so glad i got to hear strum, brakes and private joke, missed slowburner though. doh.
it's been a while since i've heard guitar and bass tone work so magically together to create one big swirling beast of rock. and nice finish to 3 most enjoyable sets over the weekend by po-ha, mestar and the lambs.
wow!!! they were wildly good!!! never seen anythign like it b4 and im glad i went
// but what i saw was the sweetest sounding, fullest beautiful shit around. so glad i got to hear strum, brakes and private joke, missed slowburner though. doh. //
can't say it any better than that, i don't know why the letterbox lambs rn't bigger, cause they were soooo good!!! wow, im soooo lucky that i went :D
Very nice . . . Looma kinda suited the very mellow mood of the crowd (i.e. damn tired for the most part!) and a bit of geetar violence is always welcome with me :)
The Lambs were in great form, including all the technical f' ups ... possibly not the "best" show I've seen 'em do, but probably the most entertaining ... hopefully the album'll make it's way out soon.
there were a few fuckups but as u said it was an entertaining gig
i quite like looma, are most of their songs instrumental??? cause i haven't been to many gigs, i haven't seen many bands like this and it isn't what im used too.
are their any other bands like letterbox lambs or looma??? i heard dinosaur jnr. mentioned
"are their any other bands like letterbox lambs or looma??? i heard dinosaur jnr. mentioned" Jon Jr.
You mean albums/bands similar to Lambs and Looma? International and National. COme on NZM!! someone could help make this interesting? 6 degrees of seperation styles?
Off top of my head: NZ: Bailter Space, Bilge Festival, ...
i am hesitant to make comparisons, i know jules will give me shit:) the following are just bands you'd prob like if you liked the lambs and looma. get a copy of looma latest and it will have you hanging out for their new one which i think is on the way.
but i'd say listen to po-ha, mescalin, rawer, ejector (local), meterman, xanadu, Jakob,
preston school of industry, my bloody valentine, Couch, Interpol (intl) among many fuckn others.
in relation to Looma right? If the Lambs, interesting call.
Looma are noise rock so yeah: Mogwai, Jakob, HDU... I think Joe mentioned the 3Ds
Lambs is tougher in some respects: Sparta a bit(heaps of Lambs moments on that album), umm I need to think more about this one.
looma: listen to bailter space and my bloody valentine those are the bands i hear in them. Calling Looma noise rock is stupid stefan. I have heard no noise from this band. Lush beautiful pop sounds i would say post pop rock. You want noise rock listen to snapper. Dont write off noise rock or looma so easily i mean HDU and looma? poles apart nothing similar at all. HDU dark cold, looma warm and happy.
Letterbox lambs: Not fugazi. I would say listen to most wellington rock bands playing around today. Shows the impact that band had on this wee town.
I definitely recall the 3Ds when I listen to the Looma album, but there's other stuff there too. I think it's because Looma hint at a pop element in their music, much more so than what I've heard from other noise rock which is really only limited to 3 or 4 bands.
I knew someone would complain about my Looma call. It is the best I can do to hint at what they are, you cannot deny their noise rock ethic though Andoru. The choatic distorted guitars etc. To say they aren't is stupid too. Listen to the track "Continuum" Andoru, tell me otherwise, please.
You say Looma and HDU, one warm, one happy, so? It isn't the tone of the music but the style. Anyway this is a discussion where I am in over my head so I'll stop.
for a slightly more pop version of looma, check out some degrees k. The noise/bailterspace inspiration (note the word inspiration..andrew) still shines through yet the vocals are more rock then looma's sweet pseudo lullaby sweetness.
//Letterbox lambs: Not fugazi.
Have you heard The Argument by Fugazi? I think that's a fair call - they def come from the same place philosophically. Jawload + Hell is other people are also worth checking out.
Looma - bailter space, and maybe a little pixies in there somewhere? there's another band recently that reminded me of lambs, I just can't remember at the moment. Have to come back to it.
The thing what your saying joe and stefan is that looma are better than other "noise rock" bands because they are palatable, easy to get into, middle of the road. pop.
This is bullshit. Though the mainstream and noise music needs to meet somewhere in the middle . which looma do well. I dont think just because they have singy singy songs makes them more advanced or taking anything further than HDU and the like.
I have listened to continuum it is great. But no it is not noise rock. It is like that Ejector song it is just a normal pop song with no vocals. Hardly post rock. Just the same old rock but with no vocals.
// The thing what your saying joe and stefan is that looma are better than other "noise rock" bands because they are palatable, easy to get into, middle of the road. pop.
Bollocks, I did not say that nor do I agree with that.
" The thing what your saying joe and stefan is that looma are better than other "noise rock" bands because they are palatable, easy to get into, middle of the road. pop."
I'm saying nothing of the sort. I'm saying they are poppier than other bands people say they sound like which, as far as I am concerned, has nothing to do with whether Looma are "better" than any other band.
I have no idea what you think noise rock is supposed to be, but Looma definitely share some things with bands that other people call noise rock. Personally, I hate this whole million different names for rock thing anyway. It's stupid and largely irrelevant.
For the record - other bands that I think of when I hear Looma - The 3Ds, Jakob. Other bands that I think of when I hear the Lambs: none.
Jesus Christ! Is it possible anymore for any discussion on these forums to NOT turn into an argument?
This thread could simply be a list of bands for people to check out if they like the sound of Looma or the lambs. You know, perhaps useful for someone outside of the Wellington intelligentsia (tic)

good call.
Possibly Ted Leo and the Pharmicists too though they are a bit poppier.
Teina, sometimes what the day needs is a good argument to get it going, like coffee minus the caffine and teeth stains. I think I might enjoy being an old fart, Andoru would be my perfect retirement village buddy.
Just enjoy it.....i think the point of this exercise was to educate jon jr with some wonderful indie noise pop/indie rock influence, not argue wether or not looma are noise rock.
i was about to say that myself, thank you teina, the list of bands i was lloking for, has been given to me by you.
