I heard a rumour from a friend of a friend of a friend. He reckons that M2 as it is is going to be scrapped and it's going to be replaced with a different music video show. Apparently the team behind the dance music website biggie.co.nz have been asked for ideas.
It could just be crap, or wishful thinking on someone's behalf, or it could be... Oh, say it ain't so!

It's not hard to figure out that M2 plays a lot of NZ music the broadcasters wouldn't otherwise air.
Losing the show would be a huge blow to all those brilliant NZ acts currently gaining some much needed TV exposure.
Handing the show over to inane commercial producers would have the same effect (they don't give a fuck about NZ music)
Let's hope none of these rumours prove to be more than just that! M2 should be a separate dedicated TV channel (in a perfect world)!!!

While we love our sponsors to bits, we don't HAVE a main one...and because they are SPONSORS, if they decide not to renew the sponsorship after the end of their contract, we go get a new one. If you're talking about NZ on Air (bless them!) their terms of contract far exceed the '2 months' you speak of. TVNZ are contractually committed beyond this point also. And us at M2 are committed indefinately. Use your brain...don't believe the hype. M2's not perfect, but I like it and keeps me company when I'm sitting on the couch on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. If stuff does get changed, I'd like to see Number 8 remain in some form. All the cool old New Zealand videos are much appreciated.

Oh, don't you worry. I get things wrong on a fairly regular basis and I'm happy to take the fall for it - sometimes I even get things right! And...I'm pretty sure I'm right on this one. M2 is only likely to get bigger and better, but, as Leanda says below, there's nothing massive afoot, so everyone can take a nice deep breath and relax.
I can understand why you may think that those holding the reins would keep such vital info from presenters, but fortunately m2 is very honest with us at all times and keeps us totally up to date with what's going on - perhaps that's not how all TV shows work, but I'm pleased to say that's the way it is at m2.

Well Robyn...at the mo, there are no real plans to change the format, unless we go 24/7, which means we will ADD to the current format to include some other genres that we're not currently covering (which will be ace!) so that eventually you'll get to see everything you wanna see somewhere on M2. Until then, stuff might get tweaked, added to, or changed around, but nothing too revolutionary is planned at this stage of the game. As for those blimmin porn ads, I hear ya loud and clear on those...but unfortunately no matter WHAT we played, they'd still be there...the ad's are a tvnz thing, not us unfortunately. Though would you rather sacrifice the important exposure of some lesser known bands, and local ones at that who could use the push, for the sake of sitting though a few crap ads? Personally, I know which I'd prefer, but then again, I am sorta biased...

m2 is the shiznit - i have a lot of respect for tvnz, tv2, the govt, and most of all the m2 people and anyone else who made m2 happen and proved all those doubters wrong. i remember when someone posted the mission statement on this site before m2 started, there was by and large a collective groan. i don't hear anyone complaining now.
and thanks to jane and leanda for keeping us informed. i love new zealand's closeness - do the mtv people go around american websites? do you see them at local gigs?
