little people at the front of gigs

i was just watching a shihad gig vid.
and i noticed something, there are always young pre/teenage grls at the front of the crowd, being squashed by moshers...
for the life of me i can't understand why u'd want to be there hangin onto a fence or something like that??? while being smothered from behind, by excited, jumping, emtionally charged people (mostly boys)
im not sayin they shouldn't be there, but i just would like someone to explain the point...
is it to see the band, cause i wouldn't have thought that it would be fun...
i don't know

Forums: The Bar,

well if you really love the band, thats about as close to them as you're gonna get!

i hate being at the front of a crowded gig because its uncomfortable and painful. the only concert i was ever at the front of, was stabbing westward. it was a good thing i did because i got pulled up on stage for a song! that would never have happened had i not been in the front being squished into the barriers. go me.

Yeah but your not little

im not big either.

As a little person myself (and well beyond pre/teenage years), I can assure you that if we don't make it to the front, we don't see much. I went to the sold-out Trinity Roots gig at Galatos a few months back, and all I could see was the drum mics - I got a sore neck looking at those for two hours I can tell you.

When Pacifier played in Pakuranga I had to stand at the side of the stage and watch the whole thing in profile.

You needn't worry about us though, I'm a bit of a nana and avoid the front row these days, but when it came to the Datsuns I was in the mosh pit giving as good as the best of them. Us little people have learnt how to look after ourselves at crowded gigs.

why don't you just climb up on someone's shoulders or something?

i was at the sunday night pacifier gig in wellington and in the 2nd row - it was great. yes, I was surounded by huge excited males but it's all part of the fun! the whole vibe you get from being in there - everyones enjoying themselves and really getting into it, jumping, singing, it's just so much fun when everyones really into it - even though you nearly always end up with some type of wound, it's worth it.

plus it always helps to just move with everyone - you end up less smushed.

were u in the middle somewhere??? cause i probably bumped into u ;)
yeah the singing and jumping rocked :D

she was with me....;)

The very front of the mosh (by fence) isn't as bad as the middle. At least theres something to hang onto & theres also fresh air (ie no ciggies & pot smell) I would know :-)
Keeping that place can be hard, I'm not sure how littlies would stand up against older male fans also desperate to get to the front. But I'm tall & tough, so haha to them *smirk*

// (ie no ciggies & pot smell)

mmmmmmmpot smell

I hate it when people have bags on their back at the front.
I dislike people whose idea of fun is constantly bumping into you even though there is plenty of room.
Sorry this isn't on the topic.
Pain is the price you pay for the thrill?

Having small people up the front in a mosh pit freaks me out a little. I just really don't want to hurt anyone...

Shihad gig vid!!!!???! How old? If it is old, can I get a copy, man? That would be just super.

ummmmm they're like 30-40 megs :( so thats probably a no goer, they're from about 2000-2001, i really wanna get some earlier vids, pre "you again" i am willing to pay upto a reasonable amount... i am a poor bastard so yeah, but who else here collects shihad vids???

You know for once I actually agree with Jon Jr. I once went to all the gigs, was always up the front and always wondered why there were so many girls who insisted on being up there.

Examples of things that happen that pissed me off:
- people who tell you to get the fuck away from them when you are pushed in to them by the thousands of people around you.
- people who insist on having their hands on your shoulders weighing you down every time you jump to keep up with the crowd.
- sweaty males with their tops off in the moshpit EWW!
- punks with spikey hair in a moshpit OUCH!

Back at the big day out a couple of years a go, I waited for over an hour in the moshpit waiting for the foo fighters to start. I managed to get myself in the second row. Before the band was about to start, three girls some how made it up to the front and ended up right next to me. After the second song, all three girls start screaming saying they need help.. I go to help them, lifting them up over the crowd... everyone around me moves in to my space at the front, leaving me 10 rows behind. FUCK THAT!

oooo i just read ur post after i added my one lower down, about grabbing onto peoples shoulders......aha nah i hate it when people drag u down when ur trying to mosh - i only grab onto peoples shoulders if they aint moving, to make use of them since their being annoying......

I just stand up the front to get good photos of the bands..

yeah me too. managed to sneak my camera into incubus :) got some shots, but i was still a bit far back to get really good ones

the worst thing is the couples... the girl in the front row with the guy behind her, 'protecting' her. everytime you knock either one, he gets aggro.

the front is the one of the easiest places to be, second only to leaning on the bar. the hard place is in the middle of the pit. except for a few beautiful times when the middle of the pit is the front row.

i also hate the new tradition of passing crowd surfers forward.

new tradition? is it only wellington where this has always been the case?

i agree about the meat-heads protecting their GF's ... this happened to us @ the under the influence gig in Christchurch during Betchadupa's set some &^#!@ kept elbowing us in the head so about 10 of us kept moshing as hard as we could into him and trying to seperate him and his GF and elbowing him in the back of the head (as he was doing it to our faces) it was good fun :)

I find that they are there for their own reasons. But if you want some fun get all your friends together, each put in a dollar and have a sweepstake on who will be the first person to start crying that they want to leave. I won $6 last time.

same i had respect for the 7th formers, they were my role models they were cool
this years 3rds are a bunch of smart asses!!!
same with the 4th form...
they shut after 4th form camp, we gave em a good ol "initiation" and now we get a bit more respect
its 3rd form camp nxt week ;)

Well I am a little person...I don't like being right, right up the front, but I go there if I want to take photos. Otherwise I go in the middle/slightly off to the side so I am still in amongst it all but if it gets too much it's not too far for me to go to get out. I like it there because of the atmosphere all the people having a great time and all the sweat hehe. Plus it is the only place you can dance/mosh where people don't stare and think you are a freak!!!

pushing people out of the way, is an art form, u can get good practice in crowded skool halls, most people are easy to part, u just have to know how

//u can get good practice in crowded skool halls

LMAO, ohhh, it's too true. Hehe, that made me laugh, yeah, I'm pretty good at getting through crowds from practise at school. & don't anyone say I'm nasty shoving the kiddies around at school, 'cos if you act passive you won't get any food or on the bus or any seats. Haha.

if ur nice to them, they'll start getting cocky
once they start getting cocky, its either a quick smack over the head
or the whole system of respecting seniors comes crashing down
into anrachy

Wow, being a few years older than people makes you so superior!!
You don't get respect from juniors by being nasty. It's more of a fear thing.
I was talking about the entire school.

oh damn yes, crowded school halls.....in third form, i would wait patiently for the older kids to make their way through and end up being late for class so i had to quickly learn and define the "art form" of pushing my way through......i agree jon jr. its the only way to get respect - the younger they get these days, the smarter their mouths get.....half my friends are scared of the third formers - and we were seventh form! You gotta act tough to install the "fear" factor or they'll walk all over you.....

3rd form camp :D, they didn't listen to us at all, told us to fuck off...
till we played capture the flag, knocked them over took their shoes and forced them to fight for the right to gain their shoes back
jon says: bring back the cane

Nothing against the "girls at the front", Im a girl and I love being at the front, but I dont wear a backpack/have my boyfriend behind me/cry when the mosh is rowdy/get agg at the people moving round me, so Id consider myself a not-so-bad person to be at the front (Im not really little but I cant see much when Im further than a few rows back)
What REALLY gets my goat (if the goat aint thrown yet) is the chicks at the front who STAND STILL THE WHOLE TIME SCOWLING AT THE PEOPLE BEHIND THEM JUST FOR MOVING. Is it just me, or is the front a mosh pit?!
Ive been at two different gigs, months apart, and found the same 3 girls hanging on to the barrier and not moving with the crowd/music OR to let other, more into-it people, closer to the stage. The same people!
Thats what annoys me most about the other people who stand near the stage.
I keep forgetting this topic isnt for venting. Sorry, but does anyone else feel the same?

OH MY GOD I CAN'T STAND PEOPLE LIKE THAT! It makes it fucking impossible to mosh if the person in front of you isn't moshing. If you decide it's easier to stand still like the little girls in front who refuse to mosh, then it's just as annoying with the people around you rubbing up and down against you. The best thing to do in a moshpit is go with the crowd..

I just can't understand why SOME young girls go in moshpits. They don't want to be touched, yet they're in a moshpit. Guys who grope girls in the moshpit fucks me off also.

And it's for those reasons I don't bother moshing anymore. I'm quite happy to stand at the back of a gig and actually WATCH the show. Sure, moshing is a lot of fun if there's no one who's going to yell at you for pushing when you've being pushed by a thousand people... but yeah.

Big day out moshpit is cool when you crowd surf from the back to the front... go over the barrier, and then do it again.. and again.. and again :D

//Guys who grope girls in the moshpit fucks me off also <=- THAT THERE is one of the main reasons i don't go into mosh pits anymore!. i don't care about the whole "everybody touching me" thing, but when fuckwit guys purposefully grope me - it makes me want to puke!...i've had experiences where guys have put their hands up my skirt [shudder] to fuck me off, just so i'll get out of the mosh so they can move into my spot....that fucks me off to the baddest.....

that is also why i don't wear skirts in mosh pits anymore, even if they are 3/4 length....

Yeah I stopped wearing skirts to concerts/gigs a long time ago.....

get yourself a decent pair of boots. no one messes with boots. jump on someones toe and they fuck off pretty quick.
its pretty bad being a guy with long hair and having guys put their arms around you. again, boots are useful.

yup, boots are marvellous.....i havent and wouldnt wear mine into a mosh pit but they've proved handy when u come across a man with wandering hands....

i also hate it when people dont move when they're in a mosh pit but now when ever i get someone like that in front of me, especially if its a tall guy, i just use them as a jumping post, just grab onto their shoulders and i jump way higher and get a way better veiw.....and ive found that they hardly often complain - i dont know why but they dont, and if they do - just tell me to fuck off outta the mosh pit then .....although i only advise this for girls - i can just imagine what a girl would do if a guy came up behind her, grabbbed her shoulders and started moshing wildly......

yeah thats what i was TRYING to say, the grls who cling to the front and WATCH the band, its fine for blink and co. to stand at the back with folded arms looking knowledgeble. but when i got pushed into a grl during ejector, i got the MEANEST look, and i got told off by the security guard.
two of the reasons for there being no mosh pit for ejector, were
a) the grls at the front
b) security guards, who only started not telling us off and forcing us back, once grinspoon were half way thru their set >:(
are there any people here at NZmusic who are bouncers/guards at gigs??? im interested in ur perspective???
are guards just hired out??? do they do the sports events too???
that would explain ALOT!!!!

I know a security guard, he works at BDO and any other concerts where there is need of security. He said that all he did was keep the place 'secure' so nobody got hurt

i get called little...but i don't think i am!
i like the front cuz i can actually see...if i'm 3rd row or behind i can't see the band playing over everyones heads.
but i don't get pissed off if someone bumps into me...its a mosh pit so its expected!
i like jumping/moving with the crowd...its fun but it can be a bit hard sometimes with everyones friggin arms on me.
i don't mind if i get pushed over a bit to let other people in...but i wanna stick with my friends.
i hate the people who bitch at u for trying to squeeze in next to them because they've apparently been waiting 7 hours in the front row. like these stupid girls at true colours...and then blindspott got changed to a diff stage so they didn't have front row anymore!

yeah its all good if u can handle the pit i think most people just get pissed off with the stupid lil bitchs who claw u and complain about pushing...if u don't like pushing, jumping or moshing get out of the mosh pit...i know u want to see the band and/or want them to see you lookin all skanky but majority rules and everyone else it there to jump around like a blithering idiot, get sweaty and have fun...whats wrong with that ? :D

i used to be a front row girl - but i would call myself anything but little and i got into it and shit. But one time i was up front row at one of our school band's little gig's and i got a table thrown ontop of me and several others at the front. People had been using it to jump off and crowd surf but some fuck wit got too excited and decided to throw the table out onto the crowd.....it fucking hurt.....
But now i keep to the back really, sometimes a little to the middle if a feel like a bit of a thrash but otherwise, i just dance around out the back and everyone gives me looks.....its funny - i like being the weird dancing girl out the back......

sorry but i thought id share one more experience with u all - this was when i was actually a "little" girl......i was 12 and me and a boy who was even smaller than me ventured into a mosh pit at parachute - god knows how we got as far in as we did - we were about as high as most peoples knees - but there we were about half way through this thicket of sweaty "big" people when the band started up and we were literally lifted off our feet and suspended by the people around us in midair - we basically stayed, hovering compactly between the raging christians, for another three songs before managing to weasle ourselves out - again, i am mystified as to how i got out but all i can remember about our trip out of the mosh pit is that i lost my shoes......i liked those shoes too.......

LMAO

Love those Christian music festivals. Don't know about now, but there used to be heavy metal T-shirts with an angel with an electric guitar, that said "In God We Thrash".

//god knows how we got
hahaha well said, considering which concert you were at! Im sure he does...

i cant stand squealers......little 12 year olds who squeal for the frontman to "take his top off".....now that just makes me mad...though, i've learned not to tell people off - got beaten up at a gig for doing that....

What, a 12-year-old beat you up??

no...her big maori mate did....

Aaaahhh, Ruatoki bodyguard.

God bless big maori mates......but not in your case sophie......poor girl :)

big maori mates who are cool and fine and really helpful until they get stoned and try feeling you up...uggh...enter : the boots
