until ben harper or zack releases their next albums, probably not. shame that. manics are still vital. nz bands? pluto say some stuff on their first record.
rage atm - i dont necessarily agree with their politics (simplistic at times) but they definitely have something to say... and their music rocks of course
How can you possibly state that just because a song doesn't have a political motive therefore it doesn't have a point? What the fuck are you on, man?
Music is not a soapbox - it's a completely unique and amazing form of social, cultural, physical and emotional communication. To claim that there is no point to music for music's sake is a fucking disgrace.
OK then, sure, there's plenty of rubbish out there, but there are times when I've found considerable value in listening to mainstream music from TLC to Linkin Park to Eminem.
One of the things I really love about the kiwi music scene is that so much of the music, regardless of whether I like it or not, has emotional (social, cultural, spiritual, whatever) value to performer and audience alike.
So honestly, I don't quite know why you wrote your original post in the first place. A knee-jerk reaction to switching on your radio this morning and hearing Shaggy, perhaps?
//personaly i feel that if the music makes no emotional connection to the listener (creator included) then it is pointless,
//what am i on?
//the buzz of being inspired and creating music/art for the sake of //expressing how i feel about what ever i choose to,
Every day I become more and more convinced that music is something different and much greater than "art". I am developing a thesis that I hope to share one day as soon as I can figure it out in my head.
But basically I see making music is as natural and inevitable as breathing. It's not always a concious decision.
the emotional connection is all very subjective anyway no?
I can listen to rap, and think 'nice beats', and quite enjoy it. but other than that it often has no personal connection to me, as a lot of it speaks of backgrounds and environments completely outside my range of experience. So should I not listen?
I can listen to a song that speaks about life as if it was written specifically for me, but the music sounds awful, and therefore establishes no emotional connection. Should I have to listen?
Then again I listen to some lyric-less electronica and feel some sort of emotional connection just through uses of beats and sounds. how do you determine what statement it is making?
I was reading up on developing listening skills in the preschool child... came across a wee bit on music ... it IS a natural as breathing, deaf children sing, it is a primeval response to the environment, a basic need to reflect and imitate sound.... used to emphasize and support life experiences originally in it's most primitive form, the repeating of bird song, pounding hooves, and other matters of interest or spiritual importance,
(Joe so sorry I have had a flick through my notes and did not take a reference note because it didn't fit with the research I was doing.)
the one i am thinking about musically is age/genda influance on lyrical content, ... shame i don't have it all nutted out either because it would have fitted in this topic well

SORRY THIS GOT OUTTA HAND I APOLOGIZE
you are passoinite people what can i say?
first off i should point out that when i rant in these things i put characters on,
i already know the answers to the questions i ask,
im seeking other peoples ideas to match with my own and disscuss the possibilites,
this is the only sight ive bothered to post on because its full of beautiful passonite humans who truly love music,
and when the disscussion isnt verbal attacks on the personality or howe they spell or what ever, the dissucssion grows into
communication, ya get it? i am you, you are me..................
definitly agree that music is as natural as breatheing
any way
i mean what is music if not noise?
music is independent of us ,
i feel that music is a universal truth,
everyhuman on this planet can feel music,
even the deaf,
weather it be hummed to them seleves
or released from there soul/mind
what im trying to point out is
there is good music and bad music
shouldnt all humans just be listianing to the best music they can?
why listian to something and say well its kinda good but ive heard better?
anyway i too have been studying music and where it comes from for a while, and i find art is but a means to create,
humans are tools designed to create in what ever art form they choose with there peronality
we are made by an energy that some call life
music is part of life as is breatheing thinking eating shitting
and i feel there are no 'higher" arts
there is only truth
nothing is better than truth
we really are all 1
as long as the humans who practise the art of..... and understand the knowledge there art gives them they will find the truth and will act according to there personality and prefrence,
oh and for the record
love is truth
and i love music as i can see everyone here does too
so to re phrase my question
who else in this world loves music?
think you'll find every one does to some varying degree
im off to sit out side qe2 and listian to the r.h.c.p
good music
Take care of you own human well being, and you find you surround yourself with the music that you need. then it's 'ethics' dont matter because the are simply reflections.
ocp - there can only be one truth, all others are preferences
a mate of mine saw dark tower perform a few weeks back - and apparently their new stuff kicks the political arse. very smart and informative - unlike unique, che fu! and the rest of the drab hiphop scene!

im sorry you seemed to have misinterpreted my comment,
i said an ethical quality to the music in question, meaning a piece of the artists emotion#1 from their personality#2,
the current state of music in the world shows us just how sick our mental health is,
vaginas drugs and money seems to be mainstreams point to music,
personaly i feel that if the music makes no emotional connection to the listener (creator included) then it is pointless,
#1. emotion = end result of feelings that motivates the human to eithier understand their emotion or express it to others,
#2. personality = the one difference between humans on earth
