my mum calls tool "that guy who says "fuck" alot"
she calls tori amos "the lady who says "fuck""
she refers to the symphony and metallica album as "metallica by candlelight"
My dad thought I go mental even I listen to SOAD too much.
My mum reckon all the bands I watch on tv are mental, she says why can't they stand still & wear nice clothes
My mum sent me an email recently saying that, not so recently, Matt from the Datsuns had fixed my parents' toilet. (He was a plumbing apprentice before this rock thing took off).
They dont care about the music I like ...I listen to lots of different bands though...
Thats pretty funny about about that Datsun's guy being a Plumber.. I was helping my Dad who is a plumber for a while this year ..haha fun fun fun
My Mum wasn'y too impressed when I went through my loud 'metal-esq' stage of playing and listening. However, I have got her into Gomez, Belle and Sebastian, and a little Cat Stevens along the way.
that's the same reason my dad made me take him to the South Park movie. Wow, that was uncomfortable. Sitting in a movie theater with my father watching singing animated genitalia.
my parents call "the vines" devil music. I was listening to the CD in the car with my mum a couple of weeks back - she could only stand listening to two songs before she goes, in an extremely whiny voice, "turn offff the DEVIL musiccc...."
though, my mum makes me buy her CD's for her cause she thinks she's too old to buy the eminem CD, or Q.O.T.S.A. [is it wrong she likes qotsa?] lol.
Dad makes me listen to BREAD, Rolling Stones etc, because he thinks that if I don't listen to it "GREAT music will fade away, and we will all be ruled by black-hoojaa-fucker-swizzle-dizzle-rappers" [or something to that effect]....
My mom introduced me to Black Sabbath in 72' . She mostly listens to spanish music buy likes country and blues these days. She kinda like most stuff I listen too. I listen to most stuff your parents listen too.. but mostly Im an old rocker by heart.
My Dad at about the same time was pounding out Darkside of the Moon, and for some reason he would play an Alice Cooper song with a lyric line of "wake up little betty" very very loudly on sunday morning
my parents don't really approve of dropkick murphys or nirvana, they cringe and my step mum puts on her enya :S
i feel sorry for them when they hear the black flag i got recently ;)
they're alright with shihad, as long as u don't have to shout over it... which kinda defeats the purpose???
I have several punk covers CDs, (featuring bands like Me FIrst & The Gimme Gimmes, A New Found Glory, Pennywise, Goldfinger etc) & since they are old songs that my mum knows, she sings along. When we were in Aussie recently, I was the only one who bought any CDs along, they all had tapes 'cos they didn't know the rental car would have a CD player. So, everywhere we went, I had to play the punk covers CDs & it was really annoying, & now I'm semi sick of them :-S
And, punk covers make me appreciate the original songs more, so I steal a whole lot of my parents CDs & tapes to hear them. So, yeah, I think I invade their music collection more than they do mine.
my mum is into some metallica and shit.
but when i put on the 8 foot staiva shes like. "who is that awful person" or "i cant understand a word he says"
but she respects that theres talent so its all good :)
Mum & Dad weren't overly impressed when I used to listen to the old hip hop, but my taste in hip hop has changed dramaticaly. I dont listen to bithes and ho lyrics anymore. Mum used to really get raaked up at the 'sexixt - bullshit -poor excuse for lyrics -could I even say music!'
she had a very good point.
Dad used to crack up when I used to nick his beatles, led zep, deep purple, black sabbath, jimi hendrix, the doors, tom petty, buddy holly, cat stevens, queen albums...they really loved the fact that I got into that music.
Mums pretty stoked that I have a huge passion for jazz music. they dont really mind, i just went through stages.
well i mainly listen to the old junk anyway (Led Zep, the Doors, Floyd, Aerosmith, King Crimson, Cat Stevens, Free etc) so my folks don't really mind. It cracks me up when im playing one of my cd's and dad says " this used to be my favourite song!!!" refering to 'allright now' by Free. But they can stand most of the other stuff i listen to as well - except Rage Against the Machine for some reason.... ;)
For quite a few decades, it used be parents would always hate their kid's music(too loud, turn that damn music down!) and kids would always hate their parents music(too boring, elevator music, blah..).
Now its all up in the air,
some parents crank the sabbath, and cant belive their kids listen to pop fluff, some kids pilfer their parent's collections for Zep, and some parents pilfer their kid's for eminem.
A more interesting question may be, how do you think you'll react to your kids music? Have we finally reached the stage where our musical tastes will continually progress, where if at least we dont like it, we can at least understand and dissect it.
Or will you one day say "I dont understand these damn kids, and their 'crazy' music!" ;)
// Or will you one day say "I dont understand these damn kids, and their 'crazy' music!" ;)
.... Imagine if you will, some time in your future, you are watching Tv with your child and the lead singer from the Datsuns struts on stage for some sort of benifit concert,..... your child goes "Ewwww who is that old freak.. who does he thing he is???"
It is at that moment you recognise your own mortalityand wounder in total dispare how you could have raised such a child, as I did a while back in a similar situation with David Bowe
yea my mum keeps telling me how one day im gonna react to my kids music the same way she reacts to mine - which is "o my god what IS that you're listening to?"
