i mean i can understand that these albums have high profile albums and all, and nzonair were looking for "album" ready bands, what about the legions of kick ass bands with albums who aren't on major labels. And if it is album ready bands howcome PanAm and Evermore got chosen ahead of many other bands with albums. hmmmm...i'd love to hear andorus comments on how this selection of bands best represents nz music to the world.
intersting to note....not a single Rock'n'roll band, even after the datsuns major oversea success, which we are obviously trying to get more of with this big gig.
//do these bands need anymore help, shouldn't there labels be pushing them to their partner labels overseas anyway, shouldn't there have at least been an "unsigned" showcase...
a credible band , and i'll show you an embittered and essentially jealous group of people with a distorted and, lets face it mal-focused and lazy disposition that is as deluded one way, as it is the other.. Your own embarrasment should be focused on the fact that its attitudes like this that go a long way towards total world alienation and mindless violence!!!!
i think it's a great idea, and kudos to nz on air and however for putting it together. But shit, do these bands need anymore help, shouldn't there labels be pushing them to their partner labels overseas anyway, shouldn't there have at least been an "unsigned" showcase...
and something which is annoying is the $20 cover charge... i mean for fucks sake, why don't you just make it free, i mean the bands won't be able to ever charge for a show again..I'm trying to charge $10 in welly to see a couple of local rock bands which i reckon is a fair price, but when people get to see 6 nationally recognised commercial bands for $20, it kinda makes $10 for local bands a hard sell.
It also makes it really difficult for the national bands to have their own shows, i mean who is gonna pay $20 to see one of those bands by themselves, when they saw them with 5 other huge bands for $20. $20 is ridiculous, i mean the shows are worth more then that. The NZ public need to start paying to see good live bands, this is not a good way to go about it.
I dont know what to say........ i think it is just typical of what a disgusting state of affairs New Zealand on Air funded music is (bar paselode).
The datsuns are proof that you cant plan to break overseas with shitty pop bands. Because every band listed are one in a fucking million!!!
This quote is stolen from rockstar.co.nz from their compilation no thanks NZ ON AIR. "Most NzonAir music (except Pacific hip hop) has very little export potential. Trying to export 'modern' pop music is like making cars in New Zealand and trying to export them to Japan"
I mean for all we know HDU could be on the cover of rolling stone in the coming months and then NZ on AIR will start funding lots of shitty noise rock bands to look like they always have encouraged good independent music. I mean i am sure the Datsuns would have tried to get funding from NZ on AIR but they would have been declined because they weren't commercial enough. Little did they know in 6 months they are the epitome of commercial music.
All you have there is a bunch of third rate mediocre pish.
Here in Wellington the quality of bands i have seen make every single one of those bands playing look like shite bar the hip hop.
Oh well nevermind. I take back the pacifier comment. because compare them to say Blindspott. How many pacifiers are there 1 maybe 2. How many blindspotts? 200000000000000000000000
// I mean i am sure the Datsuns would have tried to get funding from NZ on AIR
Tried, and got it. $5000 for the supergyration video, before they'd cracked the bigtime. I think they spent so much time overseas last year that applying for grants back home would have been fairly low down on their list of priorities.
Oh Andoru, you seem to be confused as to the meanings of words like "great" and "love":"Here in Wellington the quality of bands i have seen make every single one of those bands playing look like shite bar the hip hop."How can you "love" Degrees K AND say they're "run of the mill pop rock"?How can you tell me my band "is a great band" and then turn around and declare the whole world series lineup to be "a bunch of third rate mediocre pish"?One of us is confused!
May I remind you that the whole point of the World Series was to showcase NZ artists to THE OUTSIDE WORLD.None of the bands that played it have much of an international profile,if any at all.Just because some of them are well known in l'il ole Aoteoroa, doesn't mean shit in the rest of the world.I can guarantee you that EVERY band on the bill needs more international exposure! No question! And once more NZ bands get that(even if they are well known in NZ),then the eyes of the international music industry will start to look at where they've come from.I've seen it happen in Oz,why not here?
We've got to watch our tendancy towards the "tall poppy syndrome" in this country. There're HEAPS of wicked bands in NZ,some well known, others yet to be discovered by the wider community.Better to get behind stuff that may be beneficial to the whole nz music scene, than to get uppity about your particular favourite getting passed over for a specific gig.
Dude if i did not like your band i would tell you. When i made the comment referring to the line up being a "bunch of third rate mediocre pish" i haddn't looked at the list in great detail. So yes i am bad.
I bet Ejector or Two lane black top or Degreesk would have been far more interesting than say Pan am? But they did not get to play because they did not have money.
Probably fairer to say it was about showcasing bands that have backing and are able to capitalise on opportunities overseas.A booking agent in the UK isn't going to sign a band from NZ that doesn't have some kind of record company backing and won't be able to, a/get to the UK to tour and, b/have a release in that territory to promote.Makes sense, really.
// How can you "love" Degrees K AND say they're "run of the mill pop rock"
ha,ha snapped..i was waiting for someone to point that out. you change your mind on bands every minute bro...but then again, there is no law against that.
good points si, would have been nice to see more unsigned bands on the bill, but the world series was a great idea and hopefully was a huge success and another one will be held, this time where perhaps more bands can afford to play...hopefully we don't have to wait until the next america's cup defence for it to happen.
I actually think $1500 is a fair amount of money to charge, considering how much it would cost to travel around the world and play to all these people, it just would be nice to be given some notice and be told about this, so we could save some money, maybe play jazz for a few weeks and make 1000's of dollars:)
// I mean for all we know HDU could be on the cover of rolling stone in the coming months and then NZ on AIR will start funding lots of shitty noise rock bands
no denying that brother....but i said $1500 is a fair amount of money to pay to play infront of 50 odd music execs, that would otherwise costs you 10's of thousands to play to. Just one trip to the US for a band to play one gig would cost much over $5000. In this respect $1500 is fair, it also seperates the bands who don't want to be signed from those who do, those who want top be signed should be prepared to split with $1500 for their dream shot.
// wonderful pop rock band
wondeful or run of the mill bro...they can't be both..
of course shayne should of played, as well as alot of other talented kiwis.
What cracks me up is that the only bands overseas labels are looking for from NZ right now is Rock'N'Roll, i mean they are seriously desperate, and yet we have none playing. Cracks me right up.
well its all just very bloody typical - thats all I can say - it's so predictable it's funny. I mean why the fuck would the "nz music industry" actually take note of what the over seas market is gagging for at the moment - that's almost too much to ask - I mean shit, we dont want another unsigned band to get snapped up by some huge international label. It's best we showcase our "finest selection" of pop rock already backed by labels - yeah thats a good idea -
I dont know...you wrap a turd in coloured cellophane....it's still a freaken turd
Maybe its so everyone at the gig can link arms and place their hands on their heart in a true showing of patriotism (sarcasm), like anyone gives a fuck about the americas cup anyway.
all respect to DD, but really, is it worth plugging an 80 year old to international media, fuck, you might as well stick fellow geriatric Wanye Mason on stage. We have so many more acts than some of the ones mentioned, that would be better served than these guys.
theres this 60s covers band in the hutt called "the strangers" maybe they could join on the "ol'timer" stage. My uncle plays guitar, maybe he could get spotted by an international label:)
if there is one sure fire quick way to kill all the good overseas exposure the datsuns and the d4 have given new zealand music it is an event like this.
My question: do any of you people think that this "World Series" will help any of the acts involved? And by help I mean "ultimately allow their music to be played and heard by many more people than it is now"
on the other hand, that's true Joe. it might help push some of these bands/musicians into the mainstream a bit more, and the more NZ content there the better. i'm sick of Nelly and Shakira. lemme hear my own country's pap!!!!!! (not that i think any band/musician on the list is actually pap-like)
// do any of you people think that this "World Series" will help any of the acts involved?
it may do, but to put it frankly, no oversea's labels are going to look past what is the current trend, i mean nz industry finds it difficult to look past the trend, why would an overseas industry dude, come here and look for bands to "nuture" overseas, they already have a shitload of pop/rock, sports metal, nu-metal, pop, hip hop bands at their disposal, all labels are looking for is a quick buck. SO give the fuckers unsigned dirty rock'n'stinkn'roll.
I think anyone getting paid to come here from overseas is going to treat it as a junket and just get pissed on nzonairs (our) money. I think Betchadupa if any of the bands on these line-ups may have what it takes to get international hook-ups. Lets hope we are all proved wrong and this showcase is going to be taken seriously...it is a wicked concept, showcase gigs are important and i am stoked that the govt has made an effort to get nzmusic scene by overseas people, if they had of showcased an unsigned stage with underground bands who have a hype surrounding them (ie. the datsuns last year) it would have made all the difference to me. And i would have made the effort to cruise up the line to check it out also.
I think NZOnAir have their bands mixed (except for Pine...although they're quite poppy I still think that psychedelic pop/rock is crafty).
Anyways, but why does NZOnAir have to organise an event such as this when they should bide their time given the D4 (ROCK!) and the Datsun's (ROCK EVEN MORE!) popularity, then they can push other bands such as Trinity Roots (they kick arse!), Degrees.K. or Pacific Heights (AND THE CLEAN!!!) I mean there are many untapped genres in New Zealand that world has not experienced, for example Jungle Jazz...I've only heard shitty attempts at that and the closest attempt is Llorca but he's FUCKIN' FRENCH!!! (and crap)
I mean looking at the line-up of bands you can see that they clearly have an american influence, would an american record label be turned on by that? (No offence to Velocity) Or do they think that that is the only way to get themselves an international rep?
It's clear that NZOnAir has not done their research on who will make an impact and when's the right time to do it but then again the internationa music industry may think that this is the best that we have so a) the ones we don't want can fuck off, b) we still have our uninhibited talents remaining in Aotearoa and c) I wish that Blindspott was playing so that the recording industry can take them to Kazahkstan and we don't have to see them anymore...hehehe that's one crappy attempt at a nu-metal band rip-off gone.
Any other bands wasting the music industry's money on their egos that want to get the fuck out of here?
i have always firmly believed that the next band who should be huge from nz is degrees k, not since the datsuns has a band excited me as much, i cannot watch degrees k without getting all excited. If they played the right gig and were seen by the right people i truly believe that they would become massive. I get butterflys in my stomach watching them play and i would sell my first born to see them get where they deserve.
degreesk should definately doing this gig as I still beleive they are the future of NZ music. However, I'm sure they don't have the $1500-$3000 needed to play once you're 'invited'.
we coulda had a whip around for the cash, would they have even been invited though? do some fundraising...shit it seems wierd to have to pay to play. if there is $50,000 revenue from the bands, and $350,000 from the govt. and i assume the punters paying $20 will cover venue/pa and shit, where is that $400,000 going. ah well, i guess $400,000 is better spent on this then another feelers album:) How many overseas executives are coming over and are they eating a strict diet of caviar and champagne while they are here or something.
I've just been chatting about the idea of having an "indie" world series here in welly. bands can pay me $2 and I'll invite some music industry people (well people who work in record stores:) around welly) to come along. .
Um well yes thats what the NZM Showcase gig is. We have a Grant ready to go but timing is the issue - so many promoters on the bandwagon at the moment...

we coulda had a whip around for the cash, would they have even been invited though? do some fundraising...shit it seems wierd to have to pay to play. if there is $50,000 revenue from the bands, and $350,000 from the govt. and i assume the punters paying $20 will cover venue/pa and shit, where is that $400,000 going. ah well, i guess $400,000 is better spent on this then another feelers album:) How many overseas executives are coming over and are they eating a strict diet of caviar and champagne while they are here or something.
I've just been chatting about the idea of having an "indie" world series here in welly. bands can pay me $2 and I'll invite some music industry people (well people who work in record stores:) around welly) to come along. .
