Hi Dust,I saw them last night in Pakuranga, they opened with Comfort me which was a cool way to get the gig going, everyone rocked straight away. The band were sounding as tight and brutal as always, especially in a place that as small as last night,Jons vocals seemed a bit lacking though, they werent as strong as usual and he got the crowd to sing quite a few choruses, song hi-lights would be Semi normal, that went @#$% off, pacifier was good, big singalong and all the favs..home again, the played Gimmie gimmie which was a cool suprise....Lo Lights.. they played Run acoustically which was cool but I was so looking forward to hearing it and wasnt expecting that. The gig seemed to go really fast which is a sure sign that is was a blast
yeh i caught them last night as well. missed the first band but made it in time to see slim - fuck i love that band - yeah i thought jon was lacking in parts to, but still it was a good time. my ears are still slightly fuzzy, my stamp won't come off, and i have a big bruise on my head thanks to someones elbow. but ya know, its all good! :) and even tho im short of $, im thinking about seeing them again on friday.
you mean they actually turned up for there own gig? how nice! *i jest*
your right tho' "Bitter" was so hard and so fucken grunty
other highlights in the set for me were the acoustic version of "walls" was it?
which would have been better if john had his shirt on in my humble opinion
bare chested with an acoustic guitar oh yuk! hahaha
"run" was surprisingly good live, good song good dynamic's if you don't pay to much attension to the lyrics?
they always sprint thru "home again" as well, it could be way more epic with a bit more space
well i dunno what the fuk would i know?
i thought grinspoon sucked big time!!!
and bollbox rex had a good sound and played really well
was a good show. liked bollbox rex. i hadnt heard much of grinspoons music before and was impressed by them last night. choice set by shihad. 'home again' does always seem rushed aye?
rock IS the new rock! pacifier played a blistering set in napier last night (people talk about the professionalism and energy of this band playing 6 gigs in a row to pull out a performance like that says it all) "comfort me" "home again" "my mind's sedate" were all complete stonkers which also says something for a band that can put new energy into their many anthems phil knight belts out the guitar version of cyclone bola the most hellish unforgetable somehow hooky riffs you may not walk on water boys but like iggy you walk on crowds
hmm, Paselode were stonking. Too bad Rhys managed to bust his drum kit after the first song. "lock and load" hit hard but it was the end of "mr creepy" that filled me to the brim with adrenaline. Songs like "beeswax" and "c'mon hallelujah" were ok, not the usual standard, a tense air about them. Their last song jived chronic, a new one I believe that displayed a more relaxed structure.
Grinspoon were awesome, my favourite new band (new to me that is). Sure "Chemical Heart" is a pretty wishy washy song but it is a clever ruse. Heavy guitars mixed with a deadpan singer, yikes! It is amazing the presence the singer builds by doing nothing. Forget the Vines and their fakery, Grinspoon deserve the attention more.
Unfortunately Pacifer were plagued with bad sound. Where Grinspoon were tight and clear, Pacfier were far too loud meaning the sound was badly distorted. It wasn't till "Everything" (a quieter song) that they clicked with me, that I felt the energy with the music defined properly. "Run" acoustically started off sounding wrong, the acoustic guitar came over the sound system as sick but as the song progressed it started to strengthen. "nothing", "home again" and "trademark" were the other good songs of the night. Our Killjoy song was chosen by Mr. Toogood, "Bitter". Damn the crud sound, I barely recognised it at the beginning. It was funny to hear the old school contingent chanting "shihad" all the time, whenever there was silence. So I was a bit disappointed in Pacifier after hearing such glowing praise from other gigs. ugh.
i know we had this chat after the gig stefan, but fuck me, what a great show...how can you be kiwi and not fuckn love a shihad/pacifier show.... as someone had mentioned earlier, they thought people were chanting, jihad, i reckon so as well.
An amazing show, but yeah, probably the worst sound mix i've heard from them. the guitar levels just kept on fluctuating during the a few songs, sometimes you couldn't even hear guitars, especially during bitter. Hopefully they will have sorted out those problems for the other welly shows.
It wasn't a major problem, as everyone singing along to pretty much every song drowned out the band anyway.
I loved the show, it has been too long, i can't wait to see them again. I thought the acoustic songs by jon were a welcome change and really made the evening more dynamic and beautiful....shit when did jons voice get so amazing? i felt sorry for jon and his mic problems, would have felt bad to be a sound tech after that show.
it was a good gig but yeah from what I'd heard I was expecting it to be on par with their last lot of Town Hall gigs and that they were going to blow Grinspoon away but I thought Grinspoon were better last night.
// oh and to that crowd surfer that friggin flew out of nowhere and hit me, f*ck you!
i dunno man, you go to the james cab to see shihad, expect to get clobbered. i know it's not an excuse. never have i been in the shihad moshpit and walked away without major bruising or a doc marten kick to the head. consider it a battle wound. yet another rite of passage.
yeah, that's why i avoid the shihad moshpits these days. i could always tell you the funny story of when HLAH played at hutt high in 97 and there was a queue of probably twenty people on both sides of the stage ready to stage dive. that was with only about a hundred people ready to catch them. we were the hell bogans.
man thats a pedantic review. Step 1 - Pasleode triumph over gear failure. Last song sounds cool. They do Welly proud. Step 2 - A bigger sound from a bigger Aussie band - a tight-ish performance with music made for the live nu metal/rock mosh/headnod set. Step 3 - The boys step up another ratchet notch, lighting goes off, sound is loud and sweet. This is a live rock show. I again feel in the presence of greatness.
Sure the sound wasn't fractionally as good as Napier or whatever but I'd be a dick for mentioning that. This is a great rock show that isn't all about the english FashionRock of this month or whatever.
I'm sorry antic but it just didn't do it for me last night.
With Grinspoon I found myself automatically grooving but with Pacifier I didn't feel it as much or as consistantly.
Yeah sorry for you too bro - it fuckin worked for me! From where I was it looked like a sea of hands and bodies going nuts with joy. Fuckin Great show, and I'm there Monday. Stoked.
yeah I was contemplating moving back to the sound desk. I was right up the front for a bit but it was getting too much so I moved back more hoping the sound would even out more but it didn't seem to.
I'll be there Monday too by the looks of it, hopefully a better experience.
//how can you be kiwi and not fuckn love a shihad/pacifier show?
pretty fucking big call there Blink.
What about a kiwi who doesn't like generic harley riding rock? Or a kiwi not from wellington? take your pick......
if you ever listened to music with an open mind and establishing your own opinions rather then judging bands on what HDU or Shellac thought of them, then i would take your comments seriously.
hey you gonna have lunch with me next week bitch!
It was obviously a generalisation, but it's just almost a built in thing unless you are a dunedin prick to instinctly enjoy a good old bogan fest like a pacifier gig.
it was a good show, I agree with blink on the solo bits that Jon did..
that was different to any of the other shihad shows that Ive seen- thought the lighting was really effective- if I had a camera with me it would have been cool to get a shot from the balcony of the crowd and the stage downstairs- it was lucky to have such a primo view of it!
liked grinspoon more than I thought I would- only have heard them through radio singles..
too late for paselode which was a shame... but good night anyhow..
;)
WOW!!! that was awesome!!!!
i had my doubts about shihad, but not anymore!!! absolutly awesome!!!
ejector were first off, liked them quite a bit, they played a good solid set, the crowd was a bit dead, there were only about 5-7 people moshin at all!!! (i was bouncing up and down all of their set) so that was stink, if ejector were after the grinners they would have got a better response.
next up grinspoon. they were alrite, not being a big fan i hadn't heard many songs, cept ready 1 and chemical heart, they were good, got the crowd goin. but that was it. wasn't overly impressed.
a longish wait, which involved karl saying hi, and sayin i was doin well in the mosh pit, and a certain NZmusic member catchin karl tryin to have a piss....
then they came on....
i have to say i like comfort me live so much more than
on the radio, its just so much more raw, all in all i had to say it was electric!!! jon crownd surfing and all :) rocked, hearing you again made the crowd go insane.
i think they should have put more killjoy in. b4 i went to the gig i thought shihad should just go on longer, but i was wasted at the end, and im sure jon was pretty tired!!!
blink??? how did that compare to the other nites??? im interested.
who else was there, i know jenni was, but who else???
here goes the general outline for the nite, im not sure if its the exact order but here goes
Comfort Me
Semi-Normal
The General Electric
Just a Shadow
Bullitproof
Pacifier
Run
Wait and See
Everything
Home Again
Nothing
Brightest Star Intro
My minds sedate
jr!! should have come up and introduced yourself biartch...
yeah, . Was a great show, and we were laughing afterwards about how many people knew ejector's songs, especially "too late" heaps of people cheered when they announced they were playing that, yet i'm sure only a couple of people there had bought the cd previous to the night. Good ol' cd burning.
Got a feeling benny d has been doing some burning and distributing round the school yard. Good on ya. Burn that CD, you won't get burnt.
I thought Pacifier were definately ON last night. I could sense more energy then friday from the outset. Phil was a bit more sedate, i think he might of been feeling a bit dodgy. Jon didn't have the mic probs he did on friday and the mix was heaps better if not still a wee bit quiet on the guitars. I personally didn't enjoy sunday as much because i had to hold all of that cunt matt from ejectors shit so he could go in the pit. I am hanging out to watch them again tonight....shit 3 times is not enough even..What a show!!!!!!!!
Pacifier really responded to the AA crowd and Jon made some good calls. Something i found funny was that when it came to sticking lighters in the air at the AA, their were heaps more then at the R18, and there were probably half the amount of people. Fucking smokers:)
I cannot recommend seeing this show enough, NZ is going to feel just that much emptier when they leave again. and FUCK me they are good to photograph..
hey blink you biartch!!!
if ejectors gig hadn't been r18 then i woulda met u there!!!
damn it all cause ejector rock and the crowd sucked!!! i tired to get people goin, the guards diddn't help, told us not to push forwards, and the grls in the front complained when we crashed into them >:(
grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
ohhh really???? cool :)
nah i was like the only one moving mostly, it was really embarrassing, the crowd.... hmmmm :S
shame on us for not doin a better job >:( cause ejector rocked!!!
hahaha i got my shirt pulled off in trademark, that was pretty funny
i went to shihad expecting a lot and i didnt come out the slightest bit disappointed. Ejector were great, much more than i were expecting. And even thouggh my moshpit stints were short, only ejector and a few shihad songs, i woke up this morning aching all over, truley a great sign of a wicked show.
after reading both ur posts i could swear that i was moshing with u through most of shihad, though by the end of the night i had forgotten your name...
i only wish a had some more money to go to tonites show, i cant wait to see them again already!
"you again" was great but i think i would of been a lot happier if they had played "debs night out" or "the call", that would of topped it off for me.
i was the guy in the black shirt and tie, at the end i had no shirt, i guess i was pretty conspicuous ;)
i thought about it blink and i was goin to, but my minds sedate started :S
yeah me and stu were shouting out the lyrics of "it" "i am it!!!!!" hahaha it was funny, i knew they already planned it all, i wish they mita changed it, cause i could pretty much predict the songs they played
NOT THAT THEY WERE ANY WORSE!!!!
"Pacifier really responded to the AA crowd and Jon made some good calls. Something i found funny was that when it came to sticking lighters in the air at the AA, their were heaps more then at the R18, and there were probably half the amount of people. Fucking smokers:)"
hahaha did the other crowds sing as well as us??? i knew all the words, and i'm not half bad either.
hahaha chris caught karl in the toilets, what a laugh
turkey, what were u wearing??? i probably remember u....
i dunno it was great fun anyway
[there are messages for ppl in this comment, names are in bold]
now, what i wanna find out is WHO THE FUCK that guy was that kept coming up to us HAILS......lol......did you see him grab my hand and then put it on his arse?....lmfao!.....subtle much.
JONNY JR - sorry if i weirded you out a bit [if i weirded you out - you sweaty boy! lol....], i was just shocked to have some random introduce themself to me...lol.....
ahhh, my pain is kicking in now, but GAWD i want to see them again!!!.
i lurved walls - i've had it in my discman on repeat allllll day!
but anyway, yes - ejector - definitly up there [though i didn't really want to sing toooo loudly, damn me and knowing the words - BLINK: what i was trying to say yesturday was: "i have discovered a weakness for RtR alright?" gawd.....lol BENNY DEE - you're TOOO obvious to spot out!]
grinspoon - i was expecting alot more from them, they were good. but i dunno, i kinda sat there going "come on, hurry up and finish" - loved anyday anyhow [?] and chemical heart [hmmmm].
Pacifier - brilliant!, the atmosphere was just soooo right. need i say more?
Ghost from the Past
Envy
Spacing (acoustic) ...well half of..
and Run (non-acoustic)
fuck yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!
The worst thing about being a photographer is i can never put my camera down for fear of missing that amazing...you know "kit kat" ad type thing....well tonight i thought Fuck it!, I'm goin in the pit..man it is sweet.
So glad, it's been to long since i got in the pit without a camera and man...bringing back the memories....i wish i was a shihad virgin again..
i can't believe they played ENVY...so sweet.. i had given up on my dream of seeing them play The Call or gimme gimme again, but the dream is alive again.
A night plagued with technical problems and Jons gat cutting out and gats being thrown into quad boxes, but a night where old songs were played and loved.
Thank you so much pacifier...what a show
What a gig. It was a whole different feel to this set. Like the dessert to go with the gourmet meal of Saturday.
I love those Grinspoon lads too. Big props to Phil you bad arse - one of the most efficient stage presences ever. Just wish he could speak proper english. hehe.
I could see the Monday night effect taking it's toll. Staple played well, real well - not near their best but its rock not DJ-land. The crowd was sullen and tired but staple played their new songs to a few knowing locals. This band is amazing. Loved by the other bands, they've been rating so high throughout this little 3 gig mini tour with Pacifier/Grinspoon. The punters get it, when they turn up - I just wonder how long it's gonna be before Wellington and the rest of the country get it.
Griinspoon cured the lax crowd by about halfway thru their set... how do you get punters up the front on a cold tired Monday gig after 3 nights prior? Simple, bring along an "Escy" and give away free drinks from the rider. Sweet. Love that Champion song live.
For some reason I thought Pacifier was gonna be a tad reserved considering it was Monday and all. Why did I think that. They just ripped it up, gave it everything. True pro's show after show - they give it everything each time. Highlights were Run the full version and Ghosts. But then..... they played track 4...Killjoy....Envy. Fuckin heaven - been waiting so long for that and it all happened. Everyone standing around me all night was just stoked, enjoying the atmosphere created by this band. How did they get so good people kept asking all night afterwards till very early morning.
To Tom, Jon, Phil, Karl (and of course Phil G). Thanks for a wonderful weekend. My spirit is renewed once again. I wanna make stuff as good as you - just once. Straight down the line rock goodness, no fashion, no cynics just for the love of it, fat full grunting rock. Fuckin Cheers - I'll remember that positivity for a longtime...
Day 1: Timagroove. 13th November, the Loaded Hog.
We left Dunedin after work, and made it to the show despite having to take a detour due to some dude wiring his car up to look like a bomb. The show here was outside on a small raised grass seating thing, complete with trees flanking the stage. Degrees K played to everyone standing at the back of the courtyard. Initially there was complete silence after each song, but by the end I think a few people started to get into it. Grinspoon got a surprisingly good response. I didn’t think anyone there would know who they were, but after not selling many (any?) Grinspoon leather bracelet things all tour, they sold almost all of them in Timaru.
Pacifier came and did there thing, which was too quiet, I guess because it was outside. It was a nice gentle reintroduction to their live show though. It was nice of them to bring their own barrier - last time in timaru there was a bike stand. Phil did some hardcore tree shaking during the intro to my mind’s sedate, and Tom joined him for some percussion during brightest star in the encore. I think Jon may have hit the wrong chord at the end. We were also blessed with the presence of you again, including some crazy fill from Tom.
According to Jon the grass stage gets kind of slippery. The upstairs area there looked like it would be very cool to have a concert, except the access up a small spiral staircase could get messy.
Drove back to Dunedin after the show, four hours sleep, then off to work, only to discover that there was no coffee…
Day 2: Invercargill. 14th November, The Embassy.
After work drove half way to Invercargill with the hand brake on a few notches, so the gas situation wasn’t pretty. When I arrived in town, I found where all the bogans have gone. They are in Invercargill. Joined a long line outside, got to the front to discover I was in the wrong line, went to the other line and got my entry sorted then joined the other line again. Finally got inside and broke my shoelace. Degrees K got a better response from Invercargill, and there were actually some people up at the front. It sounded a lot better, but maybe that was just because it was louder. Grinspoon had a bit of a slow start, but they warmed as the crowd did, and were up to speed pretty quickly.
Pacifier started out their set with the normal tunes, then mixed the order around a little and threw in the thin white line, and a bit of iron maiden. At times it sounded like the PA wasn’t coping too well, but it made it through. The crowd was really strange, there wasn’t much pushing at all. I don’t think there was even anyone touching me for most of the set. Maybe they still respect the hair in Invercargill. Either that or the bogans have discovered weed. I think that there was more demand for la la land than bitter in the encore, but thankfully the band chose bitter anyway. That was the end of my neck.
After the show Phil Grinspoon told me he liked my homemade “your favourite band sucks” shirt, so I hooked him up with one. I got the last Grinspoon shirt.
Day 3: Dunedin, 15th November, Union Hall.
This gig was advertised as being at refuel, then it was apparently moved to the lounge, before finally moving to the hall, where they decided to use their own barrier, made from overlapping sheets of wood, bare steel pipes and screws sticking out. That was my main source of bruises and cuts from the tour.
8 Foot Sativa opened up and got the crowd going like no other opener in the south. Some dude told us it was time to get moshing in between sets and got offended when I told him we should at least wait until they had some drums on stage. His idea was to mosh between sets and start punching when the band comes on. Why do these guys always disappear when the music starts? Grinspoon got a good response from Dunedin and came on firing. There set was shortened due to the drummer being unwell, I think they just dropped the first song, anyday, anyhow. Joe went too hard and screwed his back. Pacifier played a nice set. My highlight was them playing gimme gimme for me. Tom nailed it. Jon pulled out some generic metal riff which sounded very pantera-ish. Dunedin probably had the best crowd – heaps of pushing, but still room to jump. It was, as always, the hottest venue.
There was an afterparty downstairs at refuel with some local bands. Some were alright, some weren’t. I had to go home and sleep for 12 hours. Cheapest beer of the tour.
Day 4: Christchurch, 16th November, University of Canterbury ballroom.
Really expensive beer for a student place. Hooster opened up. There where lots of people, but no one really seemed to be getting too into them, except for a few screaming girls. There was a lot of love for Grinspoon, and they put on one of their best shows. By the time pacifier made it on the push from behind was huge, so it was nice to have a proper barrier back at the front. Jon and Phil were using mesas for a “modern” sound at the Christchurch gigs. I saw one in the window of the rockshop for $6000 or something like that. Tom broke a snare skin during my mind’s sedate and no one helped him, so he threw his kit round at the end, Karl’s bass got worked over by the crowd before he pulled off some nice dance moves. I think Jon’s guitar got added to the drum kit somewhere. Eventually the kit got sorted out and we got the encore. Tonight it was time for you again again and there was also the odd acdc riff thrown around.
After the show I headed along to the jetset lounge to see the punkfest. Arrived there some time during flesh d-vice’s set. I don’t like all punk, but this was good stuff, fast and hard, lots of down strokes. They dedicated flaming soul to pacifier, which was the only song I knew.
Last day of a five day journey. 17th November, The Civic.
More expensive beer, and a strange venue. Its really wide, and the stage was over on one side, kind of separated by a wall of speakers down the middle of the room. Fuce got a respectable response, though it was a shame that the casio wouldn’t work. Grinspoon came on to a pretty quiet crowd, and Phil didn’t look like he was enjoying himself. Depending on who you ask, he hadn’t slept for two to four days. There was little talking and no signature dance moves. The rest of the boys seemed to try to make up for it though. The set ended with the drum kit being knocked over and Phil launched himself into it, wearing the shirt I gave him. I was stoked.
This venue must have had some wicked air conditioning, or maybe it was because the crowd was a little more restrained, but I was feeling pretty cold until pacifier came on. The last show of the tour, and they were still giving it all. The crowd wasn’t very pushy so there was lots of room for jumping. During bullitproof there was enough jumping for the barrier to start moving. Maybe they will need to consider using a “grade 6” barrier next time… The first set seemed to go quicker than the other nights. Maybe it was the good coffee I got that day. I had asked Jon if we would be getting the full version of run, and he gave me a very definite yes. We were not let down. The acoustic version is cool, but the full version is huge. I don’t think any crowd managed to get the start of the sing along bit right though. The whole band played I love rock n roll for a while, then it was time for a song “that starts with the bass and drums.” Unfortunately it was not for what you burn, but bitter is still good. I guess they still had some energy left as we got la la land as well before trademark. For once I felt I could have kept going for a few more songs. I think the beers after the show were cheaper, definitely nicer. It was very cool to talk to all the bands after the show, and I finally lay down to sleep as the sun was rising. Cheers for a good time.
Left Christchurch when the money ran out, drove most of the way back to Dunedin with the fuel gauge below empty. Don’t know how I made it, I guess the gods of rock were smiling on me.
Would have been nice to get stranger. For anyone who is interested, the crowds were far better at the two all ages gigs than at any of the r18 ones. Why have crowds in the last few years decided to pass crowd surfers straight to the front?

Weird to see them in a pub, but seeing as I've seen them at two big venues this year, it made a nice change.
My favourites? My Mind's Sedate, The General Electric, Trademark, and...Home Again. Oh so cliche.
Not much early stuff there - except 'Gimme Gimme' in the encore.
It sucks being short though.

yeah, that's why i avoid the shihad moshpits these days. i could always tell you the funny story of when HLAH played at hutt high in 97 and there was a queue of probably twenty people on both sides of the stage ready to stage dive. that was with only about a hundred people ready to catch them. we were the hell bogans.

man thats a pedantic review.

I'm sorry antic but it just didn't do it for me last night.

yeah I was contemplating moving back to the sound desk. I was right up the front for a bit but it was getting too much so I moved back more hoping the sound would even out more but it didn't seem to.
I'll be there Monday too by the looks of it, hopefully a better experience.

if you ever listened to music with an open mind and establishing your own opinions rather then judging bands on what HDU or Shellac thought of them, then i would take your comments seriously.
hey you gonna have lunch with me next week bitch!
It was obviously a generalisation, but it's just almost a built in thing unless you are a dunedin prick to instinctly enjoy a good old bogan fest like a pacifier gig.

it was a good show, I agree with blink on the solo bits that Jon did..
that was different to any of the other shihad shows that Ive seen- thought the lighting was really effective- if I had a camera with me it would have been cool to get a shot from the balcony of the crowd and the stage downstairs- it was lucky to have such a primo view of it!
liked grinspoon more than I thought I would- only have heard them through radio singles..
too late for paselode which was a shame... but good night anyhow..

wicked. absoloutly wicked.
all i remember from last night was a whole lot of noise, cool lighting and very sweaty boys.
wasn't too sure about jon's vocals for the first couple of songs, but i reackon he was in his prime for 'walls'.
meh, i hardly even went in the "mosh" and yet i STILL managed to strain my calf muscle.......gawd thats a crack up.

yeah sweaty boys ;) me included
WOW!!! that was awesome!!!!
i had my doubts about shihad, but not anymore!!! absolutly awesome!!!
ejector were first off, liked them quite a bit, they played a good solid set, the crowd was a bit dead, there were only about 5-7 people moshin at all!!!
Comfort Me

jr!! should have come up and introduced yourself biartch...
I cannot recommend seeing this show enough, NZ is going to feel just that much emptier when they leave again. and FUCK me they are good to photograph..

i went to shihad expecting a lot and i didnt come out the slightest bit disappointed.
"you again" was great but i think i would of been a lot happier if they had played "debs night out" or "the call", that would of topped it off for me.

i can't believe they played ENVY...so sweet.. i had given up on my dream of seeing them play The Call or gimme gimme again, but the dream is alive again.
A night plagued with technical problems and Jons gat cutting out and gats being thrown into quad boxes, but a night where old songs were played and loved.

Think I've gone 1/2 deaf!!
All 3 bands were great, thou the crowd weren't really into Degrees K that much, since they're kinda unknown down here
my five day journey. Day 1: ...
my five day journey.
