The Land Of The Long White Cloud

What a cool country we live in. Man, it’s a fucking welfare state! YAY!, great roading system (well, mostly), telecommunications and amenities to match any other first world nation. We rate as an economy (sure, we’re no greenback, but who gives a fuck) and we rate as a sporting and cultural force in the world. So why is it that our kids are starving and our young men kill them selves more, per capita, than any other nation on earth? Why is it that maaori are the most jailed race, per capita, in the world? And why is it that, for a nation built on a largely export/do it yourself economy, we seem to reflect America and Asia more than America and Asia do? Keeping in mind that you’ve gotta be “in to win”, why are we trying to establish, on one hand, a stable and profitable music industry and on the other sacrificing our individuality to emulate, and even finance, the beast that is American corporate music? If Sony, Warners and Co. wanna support and profit from NZ music, god bless ‘em! But why the FUCK are they eligible for govt. funding that was brought about through legislation that was supposed to foster New Zealand music and ultimately create a viable cultural economy?

Forums: NZ Music,

I think you may have pointed out the beast of cultural imperialism... we can't escape it and unfortunatley the reality is that most people (the masses) do not want it to leave.
People are happy (in general) with the staus quo... eating thier McDs and calling it satisfaction. How can we fight for individuality in music when there in no individual choices? Referring to the mass enforced music propaganda which most are all to happy to EAT.
That is all people are... happy eaters... it is not tragic, it just is. The only tradgedy is when the individual within the 'machine' realises his or her reality of conformity... and this does not happen that often.

BUT YES! New Zealand is a great place... I take solice in the fact that wee are not as f**ckd up as the rest of the world... I feel reasonably safe... which is refreshing from the political and social unrest in existence throughout the world.

HELL YES Spacedust, it is cultural imperialism. what is particularly sick that our own government seems intent on encouraging it
- the more you sound like something overseas the more money you will get
- if you are signed to Warners and Sony the more money you will get.
it's fuckin easy. I know...i might go and start an band, study every sound and move of a crap band like Limp Biscuit, then. whaahoo im in the fuckin money - why not? otherwise though i guess NZ is a nice place to live

Interesting ideas, I had never actually measured it against a consumer model, but yes it does seem to fit doesn't it? "Great Sounds? Good Times?"

nz sux.

Ok I didnt have time to finish that post, so before people start bitching at me for saying that, heres some elaboration...

Sure NZ's great, the lifestyle is good, its supposedly clean and green, reasonable low population, and we're not living in houses made from other peoples rubbish (we even have spare time to post in internet forums), but in general, NZ is pretty messed up.
So many people try to be so politically correct, its stupid. So much time and money is wasted on things to make them 'fair' where they actually give an advantage to the underdog, sure its sometimes good, but it holds us back. NZ is immature. Not just the people, where we have alot of stupid values and behaviour trends, but the country itself. I can easily just blame it on the politicians, but there seems to be no thinking put into where this countries going, just where its at. Go to any other good country and it seems planned, fly in a plane over a city and u can distinguish main roads, the buildings are ordered into blocks on grids... landing in NZ you notice its a huge mess (Aucklands fault, sure). New Zealanders stress over stupid things. It's like theres a bunch of us out there that want to be extremist americans or something, complaining about TV ads cause theyre somehow violent... A pizza guy running into a ranch slider (which I thought was rather funny) is banned, a lady smashing through a glass table is an endorsed safety message (yet I also found this ad funny)... All this clearly has nothing much to do with music. Theres the one good part,

New Zealand music is great. I tend to listen mostly to underground bands anyway, so fuck sony, warner, america. Bring back the 'buy NZ made scheme', and stick it on CD's.

good on ya......

//supposedly clean and green
supposedly? sure its not perfect but we're right up there mate. not because we are dealing well with our personal waste and rubbish (we're some of the worst polluters in the world) but by virtue of our relatively tiny population. we have something like 19 people per sq kilometer - compared to the similar sized england which has something crazy like 250 per sq km!! we are very lucky

i agree though with your comments on political correctness. GOD i can't handle it. its a flow on effect from the over-correction of female empowerment, 'girls can do anything, boys are stupid' sorta attitude that has our shocking young male suicide rate happening.

//Go to any other good country and it seems planned,
//landing in NZ you notice its a huge mess (Aucklands fault, sure

sorry to be preaching but this isnt a recent problem or anything. cutting a very long story short a settlement company organised the town plans for nz over in england, using their flat terrain as a default for the planning.
obviously when they got here it was very different, too narrow in some places, much too hilly and disorganised terrain-wise to effect their plans.

so its sorta ironic - the things that spoiled your organised ideal are the very things that make us unique, that make our country beautiful... that set us apart.

p.s that pizza ad where the guy runs into the glass is the funniest ad ive ever seen.....

yayayayayayayayay
people with passion,

nz is fantastic but can be better,

as can anything in this world
