doesn't most of NZ on Air's money come from the Lotteries Commission? Not really tax money (unless you count your lotto ticket as a form of indirect taxation).
i don't think so at all,
nz on air was funded by the pbf.... public broadcasting fee, until aunty Helen said no more We will fund that from tax payers money to the tune of around $85+million a year (not all of this is spent on music, the telly gets a big wack)
The lotteries commission last I heard had about $15 million worth of grants to give away to cultural projects this year.
so it's $15 m would be but a wee drop in the nz on air tea cup (note I did not say bucket as that would imply that $85 m is a lot of money in the scheem of things)
oh by the way more than happy to have some one prove me wrong.
ah yes, now I bother to look, it's all in their annual reports online.
83 million dollars from the Crown in the last financial year.
(and 951,000 from the rapidly drying up public broadcasting fee).
I'd have to agree though, that it does seem a bit insane that major labels are getting handed cash to subsidise videos and recordings that would doubtless get made anyway (eg, Bic Runga videos). Having said that, it is a nice carrot for the big labels, and does encourage them to invest in the local scene: a bit like Peter Jackon's argument for re-introducing tax dodges for big Hollywood movie companies -- just because they have a lot of money doesn't mean they're going to spend it all in little ol' NZ. Someone needs to encourage them a bit, and if giving Sony $5000 for Bic's new video ensures that the $100000 video gets made here, then that's probably a good investment for the local economy.
If you're referring to this years Rockquest winners, The Have getting a video grant and a new recording grant you'll see in the press release that that was part of the prize and a joint sponsorship deal with The Edge.
"plus one for the winning band from the cokesmokefreerockquest last week as part of a joint sponsorship with The Edge radio network."
Yeh, cheers Teina, must admit to feeling a wee bit (holds up thumb and forefinger) sorry for myself. Thanks for clearing that up.
