As long as idiots defend and wax lyrical about uninspired and dull music, then there is need for people to balance the opinion, often with more reason and distance. Yes, there is no accounting for taste, but fuck it, most modern pop music is simply insepid shit forced down the throats of those that know no better.
As for hiding behind icons, I make a point of telling musicians what I think of their music. In fact its my most popular party trick.

I don't disagree. But there's a difference between balancing opinion and trolling or stirring shit for the sake of it.

I fail to see the point of somebody posting in the K'lee forum if they've got nothing good to say. This site would be so much better if people thought their argument through and created a new topic to address their issue.

There is a difference between cynicism and criticism. There are a lot of cynics around who defend their contribution as righteous criticism.

And with regards to artist forums there are those that argue the band and those that attck the fans. To go onto a forum dedicated to an artist and rip into the fans for enjoying what they do is oppressive. And when they bleat on about freedom of speech all the while spending time and energy trying to shut down the voices of the fans whose tastes they do not share.... that's taking away someone's freedom of speech right there.

usually the bands who are crap don't listen to criticism anyway.
its the good bands that go over peoples heads that can take it heart.

these are observations made over many years.
obviously what I think of as bad music, others love - look at the charts.
What I have seen is that bands that make soulless and formulaic music have far less of themselves invested in it, and therefore are not hurt as much by criticism . There are always exceptions, and I don't want to name bands because I have done that previously and I don't want to repeat myself. Yes, I have worked closely with bands that I believe to be a waste of air, that have gone on to sell tons and tons of records. Those experiences are nothing compared to working with a group with fire in their bellies, and musical independance, that'll never sell a bean because it doesn't fit 'formats'.

every now and again the negative posting build up to a critical mass, and the lovers amongst us feel the need to say hey this is a site for music not a site against music.
It's not a place to say your music complete shite, and then get in to a bullshit fight about what you have the right to say or not say.
as blink has already said most of us have a fake to duck and dodge behind, people feel enabled to say the most utter unfounded crap and the really evil thing about it is that it is believed, I have read posts written 1st on this site repeated on others as fact.
This site is not some funny wee back water site, it seems often to be the 1st port of call for many people when trying to discover the wonderful diversity that is New Zealand music, and it really scares the hebees out of me that now that some of NZ bands are making a name for themselves that we have people coming on to this site and reading the absolute untruths that are being posted, I thoughts go to the betchdupa thread as an example some will read the comments and really think that Neil Finn writes the songs for the group.
sorry this has turned into a stream of thought post, but I need to get off to work so I can't be bothered editing it.
