ATTENTION people in, or willing to relocate to, Dunedin.......
Banned Members Wonted...for a band...a psychedellic garage rock band.
Enthusiasm essential.....no (realised) ability/skill required.
What Can I do?
I can scratch out a few chords on guitar; I can sing fair enough; I can write songs okay; Most important, I have sex appeal - heaps of it.
A Selection Of Music I Think Sounds Choice: the Clean(and off-shoots), the Doors, Sparklehorse, Martin Phillipps/ the Chills, (muttered quietly) U2, Pavement, and ( a token femme) Emma Paki.

Sheilas don't be shy; the female presence is needed so to fragrance the boy-scented stench of rock music. In most cases it's non-evident.

As soon as the level of interest is high enough to warrant me making the move I'll be rattling my dags and heading on down.
As an aside: from my perspective there was a glaring ommission from the original post that reached out and gave me a swift poke in the eyeball; the Mutton Birds, how could I neglect to mention the Mutton Birds? - one of my absloute faves.

Goodluck finding reasons to move to Dunedin...
Oi, you being facetious there fulla? ...
Oi, you being facetious there fulla?
I've encountered reasons to move there, just need to find some means to live there....
Might as well forfeit my subjectivity and pay a few pingers to have it substituted by that of others... enrol in some papers, become a student, hang out at the Captain Cook. Always got the impression Dunedin began and ended around the periphery a few hundred yards from the center of Campus, taking into consideration the flats and all.
Ahh all those murky little pubs off Princess Street. Then there was the Empire...WAS the Empire, what a shame. Just as well there's the Arc...

No not at all. I lived all my life in Dunedin till about 3 months ago.
But i find it funny all these people move to dunedin in search of something which died 15 years ago.
You can also tell someone not from dunedin if they call arc, the arc.

The dunedin sound is dead long live the sound of dunedin.
the Dunedin sound is bloody well alive ...
the Dunedin sound is bloody well alive ... the Fraudulents (would whip the pretty boy pants off the Datsuns anyday), the Snares, Elixir in Flux, Onanon (coff coff, i know, but we believe in Dunedin having sounds), Monkey Knife Fight, Nathan and thu Muntaz to name a few ... i haven't even touched upon the people involved in the bands in the rock degree course.
Don't forget the Crown as a venue. Dunners can get pretty cliche-y "my-friends-and-i-play-here-la-dee-dah", but the Crown always has its doors open to anything, anyone. And then there's the Cellars Bar. And ReFuel during term time.
Don't mourn the Empire. It was a dog of a place - the room was all shaped wrong, it was too small, and it was an absolute effing shitter moving gear up and down those friggin stairs. Yeah, i saw a billion great acts there, saw the Clean getting drunk as skunks on the bench outside, but it was a shitter of a place.

Sorry then, Arc Cafe....
If in Wellington I guess you'd be one of those who refer to Bar Bodega as "the Bodge".....all that covert camaraderie, secret handshake stuff; you're from out of town, or scoff scoff out of the loop, and someone tells you the Chills say are playing at the Bodge but, somewhat accidentally, neglects to tell you where the Bodge is. You look it up in the phone book: what's this you think, no "the Bodge"...the Chills play but you're not there, thus seperating the sheep from the goats.

Andoru,""Oi, you being facetious there fulla? "
wasn't hurled in your direction, it was in response to the "Goodluck finding reasons to move to Dunedin..."

After I'd posted I noticed the words I used didn't really repesent my intent ...but you can't blimmin edit stuff on these boards.
What I should of said was "I'll broaden the criteria a tad; forget locating to Dunedin for now, any Wellingtonians keen?"
I actually had a couple of keen ones mail me - one from Christchurh(on the merit of me mentioning - cough cough - that irish band but, somewhat parochially, spoke enthusiastically of a certain band that release on said cities most reputable record label...go the Bats and Minisnap) and the other from Dunedin who's thinking of heading north next year. No need for that when north can come to you, I say.
Mestar at Bar Bodega tonight, should be quite good, eh. 'Balloon Adventure' by John White, I highly recommend it.
