HOME of Kiwi music

Where in NZ is the 'real' home of Kiwi music?

Is there a particular venue that can claim this title?
Or is it a particular city?

Just thought I would pose the question before I put my 2 bobs worth in...

Forums: NZ Music,

dunners!

The Old Bodega seems like a likely home...

traditionally dunners
At the mo Chch - dux - no contest.

for eclectisism (not sure if that is a word) and lack of preteniousness I would have to say wellington.
You have rock, roots, reggae all within walking distance
you've got the jazz school punching out fantastically talented musicians who help raise the bar of the self taught.

however on reflection on some of the posts I think that it is New Zealand that is home of Kiwi music.

we shouldn't get regionalist as that is such a rugby thing to do

//New Zealand that is home of Kiwi music.

Thats beautiful, man... tears flowing freely. God I love NZ.

what has rugby got to do with it?

what has rugby got to do with it?

wasn't that a tina turner song?

Postman - Go to the phoenix foundation forum (do not pass go..)

Speak to stan in the tan van...

Nice call on the rugby thing, postman!

I think that some venues for the sake of a marketing angle may claim to be 'the home...' but we all know the reality- great bands come from all over this country.

(coughing) ...ahhemmm ahemmm BODEGA achemmmm...

:)

WELLINGTON Y'ALL WITHOUT A DOUBT

in the ears and hearts of music lovers.
the world is the true home of NZ music.
it is back to reclaim its throne, long lost.
All Hail. All Constructs will Crumble. All Life will be Redefined.

orkid's CD is a piece of art, they are actually doing something. Their music is passion.

you can choose to stay at home when we tour your wee town :)

i wonder why you heard the now year and a half old with other members who dont play with us any more cd?

besides i thought we we're talking about where the "home" of nz music was,

i seriously know its welli and chch,

much love to you too bro

p.s shihads ep on the new album is pretty awful......hehehehe

//besides i thought we we're talking about where the "home" of nz music was

ok why christchurch and not auckland? if your point of view being that "auckland fucking blows" is based solely on crowd attendances, i can understand, because it is bad. Crowds are small in auckland because we have no really good venues and everything is too far apart. also because auckland has huge hip hop, electronica, and general commercial music scenes, it does take away from those trying to do it with instruments.

however if you are saying auckland bands fucking blow, then you better take a look at what great bands christchurch, the so called "home of nz music" has given us. feelers, stellar or zed anyone?
yes there are signed bands in auckland that are easily outshone by others that are not. auckland also has some very good music.

degrees k and cripple are great bands.

p.s at least shihad sound like they are all playing the same song

p.p.s if i dont come to your show attendance will be down 25%

i know you have a good following in ch ch, and your music is certainly origional. although its not for me, i probably would come and see you anyway.

im just sick of the auckland slagging

Dunedin with out a doubt is the home of New zealand music. wellington coming close second. But i mean wellington has had the best bands but also the worst. Where as Dunedin has had the best but only a few terrible bands.
CHCH i am yet to see a good band come from there bar the gordons.

Old bodega was the best venue ever.
re fuel in Dunedin is the worst venue ever.

the bitch is back:)

yeah watch it.................................. :)

// CHCH i am yet to see a good band come from there bar the gordons.

hahahaha dont tell ocphuman that

what about leftfield....ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha plop...that twas my head

don't cambridge's datsuns, te awamutu's finn bros, upper hutts posse all show us nz is fertile ground every place i've lived has had talent, the scene is small incestuous but full of happy wanderers like bailter space who make their home wherever they want to be, ny, melbourne, patea or huntly, scratch the surface of our own napier scene jakob, looma, gramsci and not everyone has their roots here and they probably won't stay here.. is there a really hot nz music place right now nothing above convinces me of that so far re chch what about the bats, bailter space, 6 impossible things, jps exp?

yeah it's contrived to lock it down to one place only

Dont you JPS me young lady. Everyone says i would like them THEY SUCK! haha well...alright andrew shhhh now.

the bats are dunedin ...........well formed in CHCH but all from DUNEDIN that wonderful town on the hills.

bailterspace is the gordons. and they were barred

yeha so CHCH all i have to say to that is ...........................................

that is all.

anyone who remembers jps is not that young! suck on flex or bleeding star next time you have a quiet moment..
paul kean where are you i was bloody sure the bats used to lurch down to dunners in the early 80s from chch before robert scott moved to my old hometown, and paul and kay were rattling round the uni in chch a year ago when i passed thru always thought they were from chch so i stand corrected mind you what makes a band dunedin birth certs passports soemthing in the drinking water? is bailter space a chch or ny band really?

Paul Kean, Kaye Woodward, and Malcolm Grant are now know as Minisnap with Ep called In My Pocket.....based in ChCh

thanks aka..have minisnap's nova on a rip compilation all rollicking guitars, clear and true kiwiana vox ...divine will hunt down in my pocket

bats nz music site says "Singer-songwriter Robert Scott works from Dunedin, sending his song ideas up to Christchurch for Paul Kean, Kaye Woodward (who DO live in each others' pockets) and Malcolm Grant to fine-tune. And where real bands play all the time and know instinctively what the next move is, The Bats have often kept things deliberately loose,"
on that loose note I'd say the home of kiwi music is a moveable feast coming to a town near me soon i hope!
