Live Band Photos

im keen to check out some other photographers styles of capturing live bands. Ive only seen blinks site, which is cool, but does anyone have any other links.

what do you people think about blurry photos? sometimes i think they are really cool and the image can put a sound in my head, but other times i cant see past a blurry mess.

Forums: The Bar,

// what do you people think about blurry photos?

are you calling my photos blurry bitch!! :)

you know what i mean

ok blurry was the wrong word to use. i have seen techniques used that you cant even tell who it is being photographed. i dont find that appealing.

for the record i like the effects that you use on rock bands /m/

// i dont find that appealing.

neither do i to be honest. i do it out of nessecity. It can be done really well, and i think on some shots i have it nailed. But i much perfer ol'skool rock photography. I mainly use the blur technique now when i am photographing a high energy band where i use it subtley to add impact and emotion to a photo, or i use it on the extreme end of the scale when photographing "art" bands, ie. noise rock etc, bands who perhaps don't really want to see themselves clearly and perfer an image as opposed to a rock photo.

I know some good intl photo sites you can check out, but will put up tomorrow, i tired.

i like it when the faces and people are really clear and all the effect is comming off the person and instrument.

very cool

This site has lotsa NZ band photos HTTP://MELSPHOTOS.TRIPOD.COM
There are some Datsuns photos from the Christchurch gig @ The Jetset last week. yay datsuns........

yeah ive seen that site

all the photos look the same regardless of what band/musician is being photographed. shouldnt different effects be used for different atmospheres?

anyway im no expert

yeah, youre no expert and neither is mel.
I know that mel has never had any photography training and has learnt to take photos through trial and error.
And she only owns one camera which is falling apart and is 40 years old.
I think photographers should take photos which ever way makes them happy.

http://melsphotos.tripod.com ]

sorry if i offended. your obviously friends with mel.

i just thought the photos lack diversity between bands.

//I think photographers should take photos which ever way makes them happy.

for sure. everyone has different ideas of what they like and dont. you cant please everyone.

yes, you definatly can't please everyone....
You may not have looked at all the photos on the site, sure most have that 'blurry' effect, but there are also 'non blurry' photos there too. A good example is the D4 and Datsuns photos on the site, about 1/2 are 'blurry' and 1/2 are clear.

http://melsphotos.tripod.com ]

anyway isnt any publicity good publicity?

people might read this and then go look at what all the fuss is about

just cause i dont like dosent mean others wont

http://melsphotos.tripod.com ]

So true....

http://melsphotos.tripod.com ]

ah mel from mels photos

your here, can you explain the idea behind the blurry photos and what it means to you.

cause i dont understand it at all. surely its better when you can recognize the person being photographed?

Hi manamana, yeah I decided it was about time I join the nzmusic.com forums.

Hmmmmm, I suppose one reason why I like taking 'blurry' photos is because I cannot draw or paint on paper to express myself, I basically could not draw a picture to save my life hehehe, so to be able to take such colourful, creative, and interesting photos really excites me, it actually gives me the chance to express myself creativly.
I like long exposures (blurry photos) because the colours end up being so vivid and interesting, and you never quite know what the end result is going to be.
Theres nothing quite like the thrill of taking your film in to get developed and then counting down the minutes to when you can pick it up and examine your photos - it really gives me such a high. hahaha that probably makes me sound insane, but thats just the way I feel about photos.

pretty harsh calls mana...it's all personal preference.

i think i've only nailed the "blurry" (such a stupid description, as there is nothing blurry about it) technique twice. The photo of Dolf, the first up when you click on the datsuns link cause the only movement is in the headstock and dolfs hand, enough movement to show the action happening but not over the top. Subtle is best.
The other shot is the ist one that pops up when you click on Marystaple, of Aaron, i love this shot, he is crisp as, sharp as a tack, you can even see the sweat running down his face, but all around him is a swirl of colour. These are the only 2 "blurry" style shots that are on my wall (gallery in my studio), that sit among heaps of more classic looking shots.

I agree with mel in the way that it makes it exciting waiting for your photos becuase anything can happen, you never know quite how they are going to look. Though it often does ruin a photo which doesn't need it.

// its all about personal preference

im all for that.

maybe mel can dog my photos when i get my camera ;)

// Subtle is best.

Yeap. Your subtle stuff rules Blink. Just the over crowded ones that bug me at times.
Fuzzy lights. Not blurry.

// maybe mel can dog my photos when i get my camera ;)

Can I dog them too?

i'll email you an "overcrowded" photo:) bitch:)

send me an email and i will email you a photo of you in the overcrowded crowd looking knackered at the datsuns gig.

anyone want to "dog" my photos, simply send email to

i_wanna_dog_ians_photos@blink.net.nz

who cares about the Datsuns? I wanna better look at your Bon Jovi Stadium Tour jacket.

mana, I wouldnt 'dog' your photos, I think it would be great for you to get into band photography.
And then you too can develp your own style just like other phtographers.

http://melsphotos.tripod.com ]

hey mel you must be doing well you have 2 staunch groupies on this site passerine and divad

blink do rocktographers have female groupies?, cause thats the only reason im in it

yeah buy only after i dog your datsuns review.

where is that?

http://www.doghumpingleg.com ]

groupies aye mana?? whatever....

//yeah buy only after i dog your datsuns review.

is that aimed at me mana?

http://melsphotos.tripod.com ]

working on it now. I'm slack ass #1 at the moment.

http://www.lazyslave.com ]

ok but it would be sweet if it was before there next gig :)

http://www.slapyourears.com ]

if i could spell i would of said their nuxt gig

http://www.standard4.org ]

I know, I know! Once exams finish I'll strive harder to be more prompt. I didn't used to be this bad, I don't think. Hmm, maybe I should get Teina to set me deadlines.

// I wanna better look at your Bon Jovi Stadium Tour jacket

it's just getting blown out of proportion. it's no jacket ,just a t-shirt. a fuckn cool tshirt, but just a shirt. Matt Staple offered me straight up $50 for it, but i couldn't let it go. my fav shirt.

and mana! i got no groupies, i'm to hairy. Hopefully mel doesn't have this problem :)

don't hold out for that datsuns review, I'm still waiting on that "guess who" review from may 31st 2002. I do believe Stefan has a current 5 month backlog on his reviews.

oh a t-shirt. I tried to track you down after the gig to see it.
d'oh, Guess Who. I had a cold that night it would have been a poorly written and not very well represented review. phew, saved my ass on that one.

im looking at buying a camera, the most i could spend is about $1500

i am a beginner, so i want something that i can learn and then hopefully progress with. i want it to be adaptable to lots of different settings, and i want a motherfucker zoom.

it seems the people ive talked to in shops are all trying to fuck me over, so some genuine help would be appreciated. what brands should i stay away from? am i going to get something brand new for this price or am i being unrealistic?

any advise would be cool

http://www.cher.com ]

or advice would be ok as well

I've done some semi-professional over here in the states, and used to teach black and white at the university. Maybe I'm just cheap, but I'd never buy a brand new camera simply because people will try to screw you out of every dollar you have and sell you on accessories you don't need unless you go in knowing exactly what you want.

I have a dinky point and shoot fully automatic that I spent about $200nz on, and a 20 yr old Minolta (given to me by my father) that I'm very happy with. I've never felt the need to use more, and if need be, I can always buy more toys for the Minolta.

don't really buy new unless you are prepared to spend $4000/$5000. Forget fucking mofo zooms. I have never used anything more then 85mm in 5 years. I have a 70-210 zoom (a decent one as well, not a shitty (kit) zoom) i have only used it once maybe. Look around second hand stores for a good quality second hand camera and a 50mm (fast ie. 1.4 lens), should cost you around $250. Start with this, see how you go.

The gear you could buy for $1500 in a shop would be no good for band photography, I doubt the camera focussing system would be that top notch, you would get shitty slow (f3.5/4.5) lenses and the zoom you get would be ass.

if you are serious go manual...save...... and then spend $2000 on a camera body and $1500 on a lense.

see the post below, I should have replied to this one instead.

I'd like to offer a different opinion. There's no need to spend $5000, and a $2000 body would be major overkill for a beginner. I use Canon equipment so can only comment on this, but other brands are equally as good. So here goes:

Cheapest while still pretty good is the Canon EOS 300, $551 at the cheapest store I know of. Has full manual control, and the features that it lacks you won't be using at a concert anyway. Next up is the EOS 33, $946. If you bought this you'd be happy for a long time.

In terms of lenses, blink's suggestion of a fast 50mm is a good one. Hopefully you'll be getting onstage so won't need anything long, and the speed is worth having.

If you really want a big zoom, get the cheap 70-300, even a secondhand one. As blink notes it won't be fast, but you can work on your style and other techniques and then upgrade as you learn, and it won't be _that_ bad in the mid-range of the zoom. The main thing is shooting heaps of film to learn, so save the money you would have spent on a motherfucker zoom and put it into film and processing at first.

And of course secondhand bodies are available at times also. Just look around for a while before buying.

Check out this link for info on photographing concerts.

// There's no need to spend $5000, and a $2000 body would be major overkill for a beginner.

ah...thats what i was saying...i said secondhand now....save up and if serious buy serious gear. I have a $3000 body, and i fuckn need it. I sometimes have to use my back-up camera and the focussing system cannot handle at all.

don't get an eos 300, trust me. go completely manual. learn to focus.. wax on, wax off etc. just spend $200-$250 on cheap as camera and then save for some pro gear, don't fuck around with amateur gear like eos 300/500/50/30

yea - i just bought a decent sec. hand camera for just over $500 and from what i've been told buy people [friends etc - not stupid camera shop ppl] that is is quite a good deal - well for the camera i bought.
it's last years model, yet - works better than this year's model.

that link has some pretty good tips, boring photos though

There _is_ a valid middleground between introductory and "professional" equipment, it's just a question of deciding whether that ground's going to provide what you need. But to start, do what blink said :-)

thanks for the info

these guys here are apparently quite reputable as far as second hand dealers go. and the price range for what you have suggested is around $350-$400. Is brand a real issue? i suppose condition is more important when buying second hand

G CANON A1 BODY,50MM F1.4 LENS,POWER WINDER. $495 on progear.co.nz looks pretty good.
and OLYMPUS OM-1 WITH 50MM F1.4 $425.00
both the A-1 and om-1 are both classic cameras. Many people regard the olympus om-1 and om4-ti as the finest manual focus slrs available.
These prices are not amazing, but solid.

trademe.co.nz has pretty good shit sometimes.

it's tough to recommend cameras becaue there is no way in hell you would catch me using manual focus at a gig, but i also know that cheap autofocus is worse then manual focus. Spend $500 on a good manual kit and put $1000 in saving for your serious gear later on. ( i reckon, just don't punch me when you get tired of manual focussing all the time)

ahhh. that was me, andrew forgot to sign out as usual. my computer is a slut

CANON A1 BODY,50MM F1.4
i checked one of these out, but it was a bit shitty. definately seems like the bizzo though, ive been reading up on them and getting all stoked.

There's a woman from Hamilton called Petrajane who takes rock/band photos. Her website is fangirl.something.something. They're worth a look.
