Hello,
I am a producer from Canada, who is going to live in NZ soon for one year. My favourites are Pop, Dance, Downbeat, Ambient, House, but I have not heard any music in these styles coming from NZ.
Being a German and having lived in Canada for the past 9 years I am afraid, that I will be moving to another country which narrows the definition of a musician to someone carrying a guitar, preferably electric of course, mastering the basic three chords.
A friend of mine sold 120.000 copies of his Trance and BassandDrum music in Germany alone (). Is there something like an Underground scene of this kind existing in New Zealand? How or where would I find it??
Since I am not Canadian I don't even think of apologizing in case someone feels offended.
Thanks

GOOD COMEBACK! Maybe he should move to NYC, since there is a lotta that kind of "music" (an I use that term loosely) in the Big Apple!

Yeah, there's an audience for it. Problem with New Zealand - ridiculously small population (+ various cultural issues) - if yr mate had that sales record in NZ about one in 30 people would own his record.
Luckily NZ has pop & so on - our electronic stuff tends towards dubby/organic/earthy/whatever rather than supersurfaced/dystopian/cyber/metropolitan - you'll be hardpressed to find a market for trance or certain types of house (grrr, it'd be nice to have the German microhouse/Kompakt scene represented here). Quite a lot of ambient/downbeat, though.
Want a rundown of some labels/artists to investigate?

We have all those styles and more. Unfortunately, the despotism makes us agree to not tell foreigners about the music made from the unspoilt lands of New Zealand, Aotearoa.
The sun has just broken the everlasting night of winter, time to put the solar panels on the grass hut and weave grass skirts to wear during the everlasting day of summer.

i had an american friend who learnt from her social studies teacher that people in new zealand don't have IBMs... we only have macs. yes thats right, that computer that you're typing on that looks very much like an IBM, is in fact a mac.

When I was in school (here in america) a friend of mine had a New Zealandish cousin that came to visit. The silly american girls I went to school with asked him if people had sex in NZ. "Sex?" he said, "what's that?" and he managed to convince them all that New Zealanders reproduce by means of budding. All these girls crowded around to hear about the wonders of New Zealandish asexual reproduction, while I sat in the corner in convulsive fits of pants-wetting giggles.
There are probably still some american chicks walking around thinking that people don't have sex in New Zealand.

Thanks for all the comments.
But, I am indeed well informed about New Zealand, its history and its people. In fact, I have also lived in the US and know the predominant attitude and ignorance of its people and can't stand them. This does not have to be discussed here.
I was able to find some of the answers I was looking for thanks to the comments. To check what I've been doing go to or search for Rick Gunn on .
See you soon

Excuse me now, I have to go back to my dee-luxe double-wide trailer and beat my wife for drinking all the malt likker.
