Anyone one see that, it was very funny!!!
It wasn't even them, it was just Axl with a funny back up band, it was worse than the original line up. I bet Slash & Duff will be laughing their ass off at that!!
The band like look they were part of Slipknot, NIN & Limp Bizkit.
Axl looked old.

Axl trying to make a comeback without the real G n'R bad move.
Axl, Micheal Jackson & Mariah Carey have all tried to make a comeback & failed.
Also why have 2 singers from Van Halen there?? don't tell me hair bands are making a comeback?

It was good to see Axl, But it wasn't the same.. It looked like he tried to put so much effort in that it kinda sucked. Oh well I still wanna hear the new album if it ever comes out...
Gotta love Robin Fink's cool half shaved head though ..haha ..I can't wait to hear his guitar playing on the album, cos in Nine Inch Nails all he is is the live guitarist.. he never writes anything really.

Um did anyone see ‘The Hives’ and ‘The ...
Um did anyone see ‘The Hives’ and ‘The Vines’ play on MTV VMA?
Man they were appalling, I couldn’t get over the large lack of musicianship that was on display.
‘The Hives’ started off well, (man I was looking forward to seeing them in action) lots of Jagger esq. struttin and manic gat playing, but as soon as ‘Pelle’ opened his mouth the show turned to shit, he couldn’t sing to save himself, then on came ‘The Vines’ standing like rigid boards and thrashing out their one and only good song ‘get free’ once again the lead singer just sounded dreadful, he was hitting bum notes, playing his gat out of tune and generally S.U.C.K.I.N.G, 60 seconds later he then went on to throw his guitar at the drummer and that was it.
Now I know that all ‘The Vines’ and ‘Hives’ supporters are gonna justify these displays with the old ‘it was all on purpose, you know they were taking the piss out of the whole situation by playing badly’ or ‘that’s rock n roll man’, but I reckon, that they just plain sucked.
If this is the state of world class rock n roll at the moment then the bar isn’t set very high. No wonder ‘The Datsuns’ blew Europe away when they arrived in ‘the mother land’.
I mean ‘The Datsuns’ had a mint set list an amazing live act, four hot looking guys and they could not only play their instruments but play them like men possessed, they had a well primed and professional act that if put on the VMA stage the other night would have blown both those bands well out of the water.
If these performances were really and honestly ‘piss takes’ then yay!
But I reckon its just another case of bands that can only play on albums, with the help of pitch corrector and pro-tools.
Picture ‘The Datsuns’ on that stage up next to those bands and tell me that they wouldn’t have made ‘The Hives’ and ‘The Vines’ look like second rate hacks.
NZ Bands the bar is low, take on the world.

Yeah your right Stefan, I should give them a break that was really 'unfair' of me, both those bands have had it real tough for the last year............................. ; )

reckon it could have something to do with the vines, hives and gnr being the only bands actually playing everything live rather than "singing" along to a pre-recorded track?

wha? whether they have had it tough or not is not the issue.
The Datsuns are not infallible, no band is.
The issue Stefan is that these two ...
The issue Stefan is that these two bands are supposed to be the cream of the commercial rock n roll crop, all I’m saying is that they aren’t all that. They actually came across as being very, very poor musicians and its kinda motivating to see such bad performances as it makes me think: man there are so many bands in New Zealand that could have rocked that house down, that kinda fame isn’t impossible.
The example of ‘The Datsuns’ just seemed like an obvious and logical one to use.
Which of the two bands that we are talking about do you have a soft spot for Stefan?
I own ‘The Vines’ album and ‘The Hives’ L.P. ‘Your new favorite band’ and I loved ‘The Hives’ L.P. I was just anticipating something great.
I got let down, let down big time, I think im just bitter.

fink, I don't like the Vines that much. The Hives I like, at least "Veni Vidi Vicious".
I know what your point is but my point is those bands may be able to rock down the house but for some reason didn't and those reasons still apply to NZ bands. Sure there are many capable but I've also seen those that are capable have no too impressive gigs as well. How do you know they wouldn't suck on the tv with the cameras and the crowd, etc?
// How do you know they wouldn't suck ...
// How do you know they wouldn't suck on the tv with the cameras and the crowd, etc?
I dont know that but do you really think nerves or stage fright got the better of these two bands?
Did you see the performance? both those bands looked in total control of the situation, they didnt look fazed at all, they actually looked like they thought they were going off.
Anyway I havent heard a good word spoken yet about 'The vines' live act only bad, bad words, all I hear is 'the lead singer pissed his pants' or 'the lead singer threw a tantrum'.
what I'm getting at not very well is ...
what I'm getting at not very well is that give them the benefit of the doubt till you see them live or have read some live reviews. A tv stint is not the best indicator of a band's live performance.
I was more thinking along the lines ...
I was more thinking along the lines that the sound probably wasn't set up well for a 'live' band seeing as how all the live rock bands sounded bad - particularly the vocals. I've never had the supreme pleasure seeing any of those bands live but I've heard the hives are usually pretty damn hot, particularly that frontman of theirs. Your point about how they looked like they thought they were going off adds weight to my sound theory doncha think?
I honestly couldn't say if the datsuns would've sucked or not. All I 'm saying is that it's pretty hard for one voice to stand up to studio vocals tracked 287 times put through that pitch perfect thingy mixed to perfection mastered to CD and then played through a PA. Jimmy's intro bit and Shakira were the best acts all night anyway.
And Bam! My man Bam was sensational as always.
each to their own ... i really really ...
each to their own ... i really really enjoyed the Hives's one short song. i thought they were messy, loud, rawkus, damn they were good. a touch of old fashioned rawk in an island of mediocre image-centric crud.

WELL - Next Saturday, 5:30 on TV2 you will be able to see THE DATSUNS "blow all the other bands away" when they play under the sterile white lights on BBC's Top of the Pops.
I wonder how it will go?
PS: You definatly cannot judge a band ...
PS: You definatly cannot judge a band on a television performance. Especially when its part of a variety show. Unfortunatly due to the nature of a tv studio, the sound will almost always be shonky and visually its very difficult to interact as a confident artist with a television camera a metre from your face. As for the live performance at the Rockerf. Centre: The Hives looked cocky and cool and the Vines looked and sounded like they were bored. Fair enough on both counts.

Oh boy , 10 years of slick grunge lite leads us to a comment like this. They're playing "garage rock" for fucks sake. It's not about musicianship and professionalism. It's a spirit or a feeling that you want to rip the place apart. The Hives were fantastic. The Vines were O.K but both of them shat on the pantomine lip-synching crap that was around them. Have you ever heard Datsun live recordings.....Dolfs not hitting all the notes ..who gives a fuck...he's singing with a passion that is sadly lacking in rock n roll. Have you ever seen the stones in the sixties..duff notes..missed timing..but they're on fire..wake the fuck up...stop comparing live shit to the sugared up pompous lack lustre studio crap that dominates "rawk" radio. And please get clued up..every other band apart from GNR were lip synching. They didn't even have the guts do it live and whats more they padded out their crap with awful circus dance routines to hide the fact they are so boring. Jesus fink it's like punk rock never happened.

This whole fuckin' Vines v Datsuns is ...
This whole fuckin' Vines v Datsuns is a UK thing that has spiralled out of control.
Both bands are not as good as they are hyped up to be, it is just that Atipodean music is the 'in' thing at the moment overseas...
Shame the UK and States market never grabbed the likes of Bill Direen or Tall Dwarfs as hard out as they are embracing shitty Johnny Thunder cover bands, as they are now...
Saw The D4 over here in Scotland and they kinda kicked ass though....
oh plizzzzze, gluepot rip, plizzzze ...
oh plizzzzze,
gluepot rip, plizzzze get your facts right. You're like an embarassing uncle at a wedding telling everybody what's hip. There's is no Vines v Datsuns debate, antipodean music is not "in" at the moment..in fact coming from down under is still a crime against culture to those NME lame bedsit journalists (read the article..they're amazed anything good could come from N.Z) , but the datsuns are on the cover, the guys who were playing small pubs in N.Z eight months ago. A victory for the small guy..plizzzzze don't knock it just because your oldtime (credible but different story, different time) faves recieved such coldness at the hands of such a slow (but sadly influential) press. Johnny Thunders influencing the top 40 in the U.K, sounds like heaven. Go to a new pub.
fucking aye it is the 'in' thing ...
fucking aye it is the 'in' thing overseas. i know for a fact that that is the case. record companies in both the u.s. and the u.k. have been told to find kiwi and australian bands. fact. my band has already been approached by a u.s. label in the past month and when I asked why he said, and I quote "because n.z. music is hot right now because of the datsuns and the d4" end-quote. aussie bands are being approached nearly fucking daily over there and I know we aren't the only n.z. band to have been approached in the last couple of months. trust me. so you saying antipodean music is not 'in' is completely wrong. 'in' is exactly what it is.
next weeks issue of NME contains an ...
next weeks issue of NME contains an article on why 'the hottest rock action is coming from down under', which seems to me that the uk DOES think that antipodean music is the in thing.
Ultra~ there are a lot of brilliant recent New Zealand bands (HDU, King Kapisi, Dimmer, Salmonella Dub), I am not an oldtimer harping on about the past, I just think it is a shame that the UK has chosen to back NZ music that is less original than some of the kiwi acts that have been around in the past.
Good luck to the Datsuns and The D4... they are a class apart from most of the dirge that is heard on the radio/telly stations over in Britain.

Um, no body mentioned Axl's braids...now they were funny. I actually can't remember what songs he sang cause I was too busy trying to figure out why he had done it....hmmmmmmmm
