Onanon

This is the general discussion forum for Onanon

Forums: Bands,

huzzah!!! we got organised!!! if you're in Dunedin, this Saturday Oct 5, come along to the grubby Crown for our seedy EP release par-tay, and see AJ Sharma and also the Subliminal Angels.

Wish I could be there - I am listening to your mp3's as I type. Since we don't have any nice wee independent music stores in Palmie (Mango Music is, kind of, but seem to only deal with established distributors), I hope you'll place your EP with an online seller or too - maybe noisyland? - 'cos I want to buy a copy.

thanks for the interest!!! we'll check out noisyland or see if we can set something up via mp3.com. otherwise, i can send you one ...

well, for those that are interested, James from Noizyland [www.noizyland.co.nz] has a few copies, as does Roy from records records [www.recordsrecords.co.nz]. in a few weeks we might do another run of copies, but that might not be until next year, round orientation time.

Everyone must track down onanon's beautiful Dunedin quarterpack EP. Some magic moments.
fall boy and peninsula make me very home sick but in a good way.

Andrew gives it 4 stars. Its wonderful....

i think the gig guide is still on holiday, so i'll post this 'ere instead!

come one, come all, to a nice of mayhem and musical supremacy when Onanon support the Monkey Knife Fight-ers at the Crown this Friday 24th Jan. Apparently there's gonna be some sorta tussle, but i know for a fact that the Monkeys will be playing a couple of Onanon songs, and Onanon will be playing at least one of theirs! Spot the difference! Abhor the reinterpretations! Drink beer and swagger!

that bass player looks cute. mmmm bass players.

Hey : )

I did get my ID card in time (although didn't need it in the end), so I saw you guys opening for the chills the other night. Been meaning to post, and hike uptown to records records to chase your EP, but I'm a slacker.

Particularly rated the second last song : )

ya didn't say hello! ya didn't say "watch out when you step off the stage - there's a 15 cm drop there!" LOL!

i can't remember much ... think the second last song was one of mine, and it was passable probably because we were getting used to the horrible on-stage sound ... but it was easily the worst version of 'Chimera' we've ever done, i'm very sorry!

There didn't seem a good moment to say hi , but if I see you round campus sometime I definitely will. Or after the next gig : )

Love it.

Want to hear more!

Just saw these guys/gal, they were cool, a few hic hups but all good. Too bad they couldn't get a better crowd thou.
Met 'iluvclean', she was cool, even gave me a cd!! thanks a lot!! choice!!
The band that played after them were wicked, the singer is a real show man!! cool to end with a AC/DC song.

hmmm ... i'm not really sure, in fact i'm pretty darned sure that this doesn't sound like Placebo ... we can't afford their fancy pedals/effects ...

I can't even download it cleanie!

This Saturday, 20th December, Onanon is playing at Chicks, Port Chalmers ... play with us ... play with each other ... reform old should've-been-forgotten teenage-folly-of-youth-leave-it-down-the-back-of-the-couch bands [this means you Barnes] ... jam about like how a frontier family hoot'nanny git down would. And then we could all share a van back to town if we don't get conscripted into the Russian Merchant Seamen Guild.

10 pm - ish.

i just bought 'hang on i'm still mutating' today. only listened to it once thus far, but enjoyed it immensely. wonderfully dunedin.

Hey is cold fish on the album? Love that melody. U played it at national anthem right?

no, actually we didn't play it at the Anthem - but it did make it to the album. one of the things we recorded with our old drummer, Al.

Sold! :)

Hey Onanon, would like to get in touch wit y'all but I've lost your add. Email me? Add in profile... :)

Onanon blew me away on Thursday night. Bloody incredible, they were.

I'm still recovering from that night . . .

Onanon were super great at the Crown the other weekend! (Sorry it's taken me ages to post this, the whole trip took some recover time ;) Thanks heaps for the support and for putting up the boyz, looking forward to next time already. And I am still gonna email you those photos... maybe today! :)

groovy - might have to set the download overnight!

i'm yet to formulate my thoughts re the marvellous Hot Swiss Mistress - for a start, they have a sound of their own, which is a rare and beautiful thing. and great tunes! real great!

INFERNO 107 FM Dunedin's punk/rock/hardcore/metal and ska station is under threat. For the past 2 years the Inferno crew has worked their asses off to bring you the finest punk and rock with a high emphasis on New Zealand music. Last night the owner informed us all that he was going to sell the station out from under us for between 5 -10 grand. Big bucks...considering we are all unpayed and we are only here for the love of it.
HOWEVER... If we can raise this money, looking at a deposit of 2 grand, the inferno crew can buy the station off the Big wig, And keep on keep'n on.

We call upon all bands nationwide to help us over the next month and half as we fight to keep punk and rock pulsing through the veins of Otago.
If you could send us merch to have a prize for people who donate that would be cool, this may be pushing it but holding a gig for us and sending us a donation would also be great because we would go the distance for you and people who have worked with us know that, we would be grateful. Ideas for funding or fundraising would be appreciated too
Cheers to everyone over the past few years for all the support,
INFERNO WONT FADE AWAY WE WILL DIE FIGHTING AND SCREAMING,

i saw a poster saying that today - shocking. goddamit! it's a very tough time of year to do a gig like this too, all the best for it eh. you should maybe think about doing a Queenstown gig - lots of holiday makers there at the moment, and it's only gonna get better over the next month. would let a lot of locals know that you are transmitting in QT too.

say gidday to Rhysie. he made lots of noise at our last Dunners gig. Onanon don't believe in merch, but we'll give you a few CDs full of lovely indie noise.

hey cleanie, check your e-mail!!

Hey, do you have an email address or cellphone number for Glen from Onanon?

http://www.tombosleyexperience.com ]

he said he was gonna meet you at the Percolator but may've told you some other place and gone to the Perc himself. he's no good with either email or cells ... ha ha! email us your contact details to onanon at ihug.co.nz and we'll get him to call you.

cheers, I sent you my phone number a couple of days ago. I can give Glen a call at Radio One tomorrow night if I don't hear from him.
Looking forward to hearing your album!
Peter

Glen's very busy at the mo ... i sent on your phone number, but yeah, you can probably pin him down tomorrow night.

yah yah - that national anthem performance rocked my sad little world!!
when are we going to enjoy a live performance in dunners next?

wow, thank you kind stranger! we didn't think we did that well. don's guitar didn't make the broadcast mix, but in the hall it was all good and we had a good time with the real people there-they made a hurravah racket.

we're taking some time off - we always seemed to be practising for gigs, and earlier this year pretty much had a gig every second week. we've got so many new songs bubbling under, and desperately want to let them grow a little. research and development at the moment.

will gig again in the spring perhaps, with second album due at the end of the year, and hopefully a pseudo-national tour in support of it.

Been meaning to catch you mofos for a while now, finally...

Onanon RULEZ!

DJs uDon and Gross (that's Don and Glen from Onanon) are presenting a very special 'The Local' on Radio 1, tomorrow, Wednesday 11th. If you are out of town, you can catch the show via a streaming link on Radio 1's main page - www.r1.co.nz

Here's a wee blurb about it:

Hello again, I was supposed to be meeting Glen again last week, but he didn't show up. We'd talked briefly about playing a gig together when the Tom Bosley Experience is down this way. We're looking at playing Dunedin, Chch and Wanaka in late August. Would the rest of you be into that? Or will you still be taking a break? I'm mindful of the fact that 'spring' means January here in Dunedin!

http://www.tombosleyexperience.com ]

hell, we'd love to play those places again too, or just play soon anyway, but ... i'll ask but am figuring the answer will be no. i should probably say 'no' myself as i'll be getting into big work stuff about then. if anything's happening it will probably be letting the new songs grow and recording the second half of the album. i'll confer with the rest of the collective and send you an email, by the end of this week (though the lads will be doing the Domestic Produce show tonight).
not sure what happened to Glen ... he's usually much more reliable than this. was his sprog's first birthday last week, it's possible he was on new-freaky-dad-trip no-brain-for-other-stuff status ... i'll punch him in the arm for you though.

Cool, I'll look forward to hearing from you. Even if you just wanna play the one show with us here in Dunedin we'd love that.

Peter

Cleanie, how can I contact you?
Aka doesn't seem to have answered my email, maybe shes been hanging out with those busy NZM runnerers

done - have replied a big reply. sorry, i haven't been on the boards lately ... our Onanon email is on our Onanon profile, but fer the rekkid, it's onanon at ihug dot co.nz

There are so many big big gigs the weekend of 5th / 6th August in Dunedin, but one of them is ...

The Puddle
Onanon
Operation Rolling Thunder
Magnolia
and The Bats!

playing in that order, and starting super early - 8.30 pm. The Bats hope to be onstage by midnight.

@ Sammys!

um ... and of course that gig above is taking place on Saturday, 6th August.

JANDALS VIDEO ON HOMEGROWN LATE TONIGHT

The debut video from Dunedin super-group Gina Rocco and the Rockettes will premiere on C4 tonight in the Homegrown Late slot. Shot around Dunedin and post-produced entirely in Port Chalmers "Jandals" is a must-see for any Dunedin music fan! Don't miss it! If you do miss it email C4 immediately and demand they play it again!

Jandals was shot, edited and produced by skilled Dunedin film-maker Hector Hazard. Hector is known for his charming documentary about the colourful canine sub-culture of Port Chalmers and other film and video projects.

The Rockettes are a collaboration between ex-Dunedin singer songwriter Gina Rocco, Dunedin music institution Robert Scott and the lads from Onanon. Jandals is a track from their 2005 album of Gina's songs, "SeaTulip" and it is also available on the Powertool Records compilation "Bulletholes 2".

how to hear tracks

we've got four tracks from various eras (first EP, two from 2004 album and one from upcoming album) on myspace.com/onanonnz.

if you are having troubles downloading from here ... not sure about that.

wow.awesome music. hadn't even heard even thought to look for tracks on nzmusic.com
this is the new zealand i have craved. hope you don't mind if i burn these tracks for my friend.
then we can dig it together. i wouldn't ask if i didn't think it was important.,

groovy groovy! burn away!! there are a heap of tracks here on nzm, eh, pass them round. we got the Mutating album available through the smokecds online store that you click through on that flashy ad top left - they sell a lot of albums by other people listed here and other kiwi acts on myspace. we haven't got any Quarterpack EPs left though ... but we are thinking of getting it reprinted, upgrading it into an album by appending some rare recordings and live tracks onto it. now feel motivated to put this in motion tonight, heh!

you made my day with your lovely comments!

//there are a heap of tracks here on nzm

not ours ... by other nz artists i mean.

ok! big special gig tomorrow night, Wednesday.

12 April - as yet we're the only Yuri's Night in NZ. it's the 45th anniversary of the first human in space. when i was six i became imprinted on/completely obsessed with Yuri Gagarin, the Russian space effort, space, astronomy ...

1961. first human in space. they didn't know what would happen, despite all the dogs and chimps they sent up.

it would've been like going into another dimension, like being the first time-traveller. anyway, the human race evolved that day - we could leave the planet. we could look back on ourselves. Gagarin said he couldn't see any lines from up there, couldn't see any borders. after that day any of us could do anything.

we're playing with Operation Rolling Thunder, the Lovehaters and the Riff Rats. there will be cosmonautical orange overalls. there will be many cool space images on screens, and a 15 minute repeating documentary about the flight and Yuri made with much joy and love by me.

you should all look up, drink vodka at 6.07 pm on Wednesday and think of a big eff-off rocket heaving some little bag of meat Russian human being up there, and think what it must have felt like and what it meant and could mean for human potential and exploration for the hell of it and Earth-perspective.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH everyone for coming along! it was a real celebratory night, there was a real buzz in the air, everyone was walking around grinning it seemed (the camera i and other were wandering around with show that anyway), and it seemed like everyone got bitten by the space-exploration-hope-mystery-effort bug, plus it was a really good line-up in terms of melodious racket, so thanks Very Much to the bands and Scott the always awesome sound-wrangler.

gonna put pics/captures of the night up at www.yurisnight.net and next year we're gonna link up with other parties around the globe (especially down at the South Pole - in our timezone), stream live and generally make everyone even more wide-eyed in feeling like they are all on the same little piece of rock as everyone else.

DAMN it was a really really good night. Thanks for coming along. For me it was birthdays and christmases and school's-out-ness all at the same time.

I REALLY wish I'd thought of wearing my Yuri outfit to the Wanaka Warbirds a few days later ... would've been totally appropriate.
