Covers that are better than the original

What song covers do you think are better than the original??

For me I reckon
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stevie Wonder 'Higher Ground'
Metallica - Bob Seger 'Turn The Page'
Metallica - Thin Lizzy 'Whiskey In The Jar'
Orgy - New Order 'Blue Monday'
Marilyn Manson - Eurythmics 'Sweat Dreams'
Truepiss - Truebliss 'Tonights The Night'
Nirvana - David Bowie 'The Man Who Sold The World'
Foo Fighters - Gerry Rafferty 'Baker Street'
Foo Fighters - Pink Floyd 'Have A Cigar'
Foo Fighters - Creed 'With Arms Wide Open (joke)'

Forums: The Bar,

i reckon all pennywise's covers are better than the originals

yeah, 'land down under' is wicked

so true go pennywise!!

All Pennywise songs sound the same. Covers and originals.

the most fun i have ever had at concerts has been pennywise ones.

pennywise covers rule - 'stand by me', sublime's 'same in the end' ac/dc's 'tnt gimmie gimmie gimmie by black flag. the liist goes on and on.

what other band do you know of that takes requests at their shows?

Headless Chickens and Abba's Super Trooper

Baker street rocks, love that song, but what i think is that the cover should be a departure. Say, i think mama said doing che & dlt's chains is not a big enough departure.

Faith no More did a cover of 'This Guy's in Love With You' which was pretty awesome

i prefer fnms version of that song 'easy like sunday morning'. or is it just called easy, i dunno. well anyway you know what song im talkign about.

Hahaha is "easy like sunday morning" a lionel richie song?

Pearl Jam do alot of covers, some good some bad, two faves of mine are Redemption song by Bob and Little wing by Jimi (did Jimi write this? I have a feeling he didn't). Not fussed about last kiss though.

Pearl Jam's last kiss I don't like at all.....but then again the original wasn't great either.

Yeah the original is a country song sang by a woman

Yellow Ledbetter is a Pearl Jam song that sounds EXACTLY like Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix. The guitar is ripped off completely... but I think they put new words into it.

Cortina's cover of Sharon O'Neill's "Maxine" has to be the maddest amped up cover of a song I have ever heard.

raining blood by tori amos?

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' version of fire by Jimi is pretty rocking. I love the original but i enjoy the chili peppers version more.

I agree with you there

anything by me first and the gimme gimme's

"Crush" by The Dismemberment Plan

rockin in the free world - PJ (live)
sexual healing - Ben harper
all along the watchtower - jimi hendrix
ghost of tom joad - rage

//rockin in the free world - PJ (live)
I've got a mp3 of that with Dave Grohl on drums, it is good

the drugs dont work - Ben Harper

oh yeah, that drugs dont work cover is awesome

Definitely agree with the Marilyn Manson "Sweet Dreams" cover being better than the original. Possibly one of the best covers ever.

Apart from that
Kelly Osbourne - "Papa Don't Preach" (Madonna)
A Perfect Circle - "Diary of a Madman" (Ozzy Osbourne)
Offspring - "Total Immortal" (AFI)

Pearl Jam hyped up alot of Split Enz classics especially I Got You

Eddie Vedder/Betchadupa - "I see red"
Eddie Vedder/Betchadupa - "History Never Repeats"

Rage's whole renegades album rocks...it's all covers.
I like their cover of Beautiful World...originally done by Devo. it's great

//Orgy - New Order 'Blue Monday', Nirvana - David Bowie 'The Man Who Sold The World'

Yeah, right.

Anyway, mine:

THE BAND - Tears Of Rage (Bob Dylan - well, it was recorded by him first)
FAIRPORT CONVENTION - The Ballad Of Easy Rider (The Byrds)
JEFF BUCKLEY - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)

With "Ballard Of An Easy Rider"-The Byrds do have a song on that soundtrack but it was Roger McGuinn who wrote and sung the song. Bob Dylan wrote the first two lines and passed it on to him.

The Easy rider soundtrack's classic though.:)

Yeah, but the Fairport version of the song blows McGuinn's reading (and anyone else's) out of the water - they gave it a much more English/Celtic folk sound - thanks in part to that genius of a guitarist, Richard Thompson.

"Flow, river, flow
Flow to the sea
Wherever that river flows
That's where I wanna be.
Flow, river, flow,
Let your waters wash down
Take me from this road
To some other town."

Beautiful.

Damn straight its beautiful. I love it:)

Alien Ant Farm - Micheal Jackson 'Smooth Criminal'
Anything will be better than his version

Manson's version of "sweet dreams" is awesome

http://www.highersin.cjb.net ]

Nah, it's rubbish. He's trying to sound scary but it just doesn't work, it's laughable.

isnt all manson laughable?

Well its better than the original anyway, well I think so

I thought manson's cover of sweet dreams was fantastic when it came out, particularly considering the music video - I hadn't seen anything that exciting in the music videos around at that time since tools early efforts. manson in a wedding gown riding on a pig. that shit was genius for its time and has been heavily referenced ever since.

Cradle Of Filth do an awesome version of Slayer's "Hell Awaits". Same with Iron Maidens "Hallowed Be Thy Name"

Yeah but are they better than original??
I don't like Cradle Of Filth, but I like Iron Maiden

What about Dinosaur Jr's version of Peter Frampton's "Show Me the Way"?

Cradle kick ass!

hehe.. good old black metal ..gotta love it

The Travis version of Hit Me Baby One More Time is great. Buck Jones do a dirtier version of I Stole Your Love by Kiss. Fun Lovin' Criminals schmoove version of Ozzy's Crazy Train is excellent. Johnny Cash's Solitary Man is better than Neil Diamonds but almost every cover of a Neil Diamond song is better than the original.

Cake's version "I Will Survive" - the line "I should have changed my fucking lock" makes the song.
They also cover Willie Nelson's "Sad Songs and Waltzes" on that album. Cake do it very well and I haven't heard the original but I suspect that Shotgun Willie does it better.

smashing pumpkins - landslide originally by ummm... Joni Mitchell?? probably both great songs.

hlah - beatnik and I'm on Fire mmmmm yep I think they beat the boss.

yes! and don't forget I'm so excited as well

actaully I just found the 'If I were A Carpenter' compilation at Real Grovvy last weekend ($4!). And Sonic Youth's cover of 'SuperStar' kicks.

actaully the whole album is good. (imho).

same with Flying Nun's Abbasalutely

Sonic Youth's superstar is one of myall time faves!!! Another piece of cover genius by them is Ciccone Youth (geddit) and their version of Madonna's 'into the groove' .

On my straitjacket fits bandwagon -- their cover of So Long Marianne (leonard cohen) was very cool...
