strange..really? I was just thinking about how the majority of 'successful' bands in the rock/pop genre have male singers and it got me thinking WHY. great input though fink..
gender means nothing - i sing a little in my band, and harmonise with our (male) guitarist - it sounds great to us, we have very similar sounding voices despite our chromosomes.
it's about personality and projection, rather than the gender of the voice. i gotta say though, i quite like a male singer/front person who plays a little with gender expectations and camps it up a little. there's a great bogan band in Dunners called Nathan and tha Muntaz - the lead guy is very camp, hilarious, biting wit, but it's not like he's the best singer in NZ or anything.
Most of the bands or all the bands I listen to have male singers.
I just perfer male singers to female for rock music.
I don't like country, but I like females better than male singers for that genre, the males have a tangy voice which is horrible.
I love females, but being in a working band with afore mentioned can be......interesting. From experience, it's not about singing style as much as about personality. If you find yourself checking something you just said because there's a lady in the room, then you are already gone.
personally i think it's more about the individual singer rather than their sex, there seem to be more guys involved in that jenre
i guess that influences it in that we hear male voices a lot more and being a guy the singers i look up to and who influence me so i guess i prefer male singers
i was flipping through my music collection and only spotted 2 albums that had female singers, and most of the music i have is hard rock so i'm thinking males can kinda put more angst into their voice (not a generalisation :) which i think people like to hear in that type of music. From a players point of view, so long as everyone gets along and rocks out with the music you're playing, then it's not even an issue i guess.
Most males are really cliched. Personally i think female voices cover more ground and they have a higher ranges and are way more interesting to listen to at times. But that doesn't include Britney, she sounds like bubblegum shreding through a blender!! Conversely males can be melodic and more angsty in their voices at times
