The awards were held on Saturday, and most people seemed to have fun. No free drinks, no table for the Radio Active posse, and not enough tickets for BFM staff to attend (plenty of industry hacks there though). Great buffet, however; loved those oysters on the half-shell... shame hardly anyone else knew about them (not).
The b-net site and bfm site won't have the results up until 1 September, even though the results were known last week. What's wit' dat?
So, public service time...
As expected Shihad took out every category in which they were finalists, including Best Cover Art, Best Live Act, Best Rock/Pop release, Best Album and Best Music Video. All were collected by rumpledsuitsman, Murray Cammick, doing his lawyer-from-The-Castle impression.
Loops&Samples won Best Website, beating superior sites from Radio One and Upload TV, and giving an early indication that "dance" music would get much bigger props this year.
In the DJ section, Manuel Bundy won Best DJ; P Money beat Thursday's DMC winner Raw as Best Turntablist, and Philippa won Most Promising DJ, proving that sometimes it really helps to be an Aucklander.
This was also the case with Best Live Event, which Big Day Out can now be expected to hold in perpetuity.
Nathan Haines won Outstanding Musician and Che Fu won Best Vocalist even though neither have been very productive in the last 12 months.
Best Hip hop/Reggae/Dub release went to Dub Combinations, with the Electronica winner Algorhythm 2 making it a deuce for Kog, while Sola Rosa triumphed over a throng of indie rock bands to win Best Independent Release for their neato EP.
Best Unreleased Song went to The Dub Connection for All the Goodness (even though it was technically "released" on the third LOOP CD and probably reached more people than many "released" songs).
I think Shapeshifter won best New Act, though I was distracted at this stage... Chris Knox won the Lifetime Achievement Award... and King Kapisi gave a wicked speech upon winning Best Song for Reverse Resistance (and his new album, which I got a sneak preview of, is the absolute shiznit!)
There you go.

Best Hip Hop/ Dub / Reggae release was actually a tie with The Nomad - Second Section and King Kapisi - Reverse Resistance. 10 points for the King for suggesting that this category was a little too broad and it was time to get enough releases out there to warrant separate categories for each.

always too bubbly (this month's Unlimited calls me "chirpy" and a "perennial imp")... sorry about that error... I was "out the back"...
definitely time to expand categories and maybe exclude big sellers like Shihad?
WHATS UP WITH NZM NOT ...
WHATS UP WITH NZM NOT WINNING??????
Have to say that this site kicks the arses off the other entries, obviously the creation of a NZ music community online means nothing, interactivly means nothing, video on demand means nothing, streaming interactive radio means nothing, and a launch pad for up and comming artists means nothing..... ahhh shit if it doesn't have blippy bloopy music and cheesy flash animations then it doesnt count?? come on give me a break!!!!
As you can tell I'm VERY dissapointed that NZM didn't win. How can a site of this quality loose to a static "home page" dedicated to a film which you cant even see on the site!!!!!!!Oh come on, I mean what a load of shite! An music/web award for a web site that doesnt use the medium??I suspect a bite of dodgyness going on with this "award??".Oh well time will tell, and I cant see LoopandSamples hanging around for long, why would you want to go back to a site that dosn't entertain you or keep you up with the very latest?
Maybe the award should have been "Best Supporting Web Site for a film about The History of the NZ Dance Scene", what was the award for, a site or a film??
first, good to see you up there ...
first, good to see you up there Mark!
hope you didn't get too bubbled - i was remarkably good on Sunday considering the whiskey i consumed!
In terms of website winners, it certainly was the year of 'dance' and more web-people were obviously into the concept of Loops and Samples rather than strictly the website itself. I think that's cool, but I would have personally liked to see NoizyLand win it cos of all the hard work he's put in. Shihad seemed to win a lot because of their profile rather than 'rock being back'. Not to sound -ve, but Auckland seemed to be trying to be London 1998...
Thanks for your support 999natas999, we think with the UploadTV.com transition we didn't really deserve to win this year. We are aiming for next year, and with the next phases in development for NZM, we hope the traffic we already have on the site will support us at the b.net's! We are not really bummed cos it was a great nite for NZM in lotsa other ways...
I thought HDU were fuckin outrageously good and managed to shut the crowd up for 5 seconds. A bit spine-tingly even, but hey I'm not adverse to a bit o' guitar-noise. Rock and Roll Noise Machine got a standing ovation for setting alight the geeetar, leather pants 'n all, and pointed to a resurgence in rock amongst the musical elite tastes.
I was so stoked when Dub Connection won. And yeah, I heard it first on Active/Loop CD3 so thats cool.
Also Mikey Havoc and Peter Urlich gave a nice rendition of the national anthem at the end with tourism video clips playin and all. nice.
Shihad were this year's Salmonella Dub ...
Shihad were this year's Salmonella Dub (ie. whoever's the most popular band in a given year will scoop the pool). This is an inherent problem with this sort of awards thing.
HDU were GREAT... Rock and Roll Noise Machine went out of their way to breach their contract provisions (all very staged... you're not going to get The Stooges, sorry).
I thought the Havoc/Urlich national anthem thing bit bigtime. Why have the words scrolling in Maori but pasty white boys singing in English? And that pure NZ natural wonderland BS makes me yawn.
i just liked the havoc/urlich thing cos ...
i just liked the havoc/urlich thing cos it was so shitty.... :)
Yup NZM didn't win but like Dust said ...
Yup NZM didn't win but like Dust said that's fine with us. So all up it was a good night. I have to say though that the awards presentation itself was, well ok. The a/vs suffered some major bugs including sporadic sound and out of order clips and someone needed to seriously turn up the volume.
The venue was apparently an improvement on last years and the food was pretty good but whoever decided that people only need 20 cm between tables should probably be shot - our advice lose the upstairs tables - no one was sitting up there anyway. I also thought the addition of a load of "public fans" up the back a la MTV, would've helped with the atmosphere.
The live music however was damn fine! HDU left me gobsmacked and Rock n Roll machine made me laugh. The queue in the ladies made me miss the hip hop act but it sounded pretty good through the walls.
The biggest gripe I have though has to go to the audience who seemed to be far more interested in their own conversations than in the award presenters or recipients. The level of chatter pretty effectively drowned out the feeble PA and made most of the acceptance speeches impossible to hear, including the rather special presentation of Chris Knox's Lifetime Acheivement Award. One has to ask - why did those people bother coming when they obviously didn't give a shit about any of the talented individuals who were up there receiving some pretty hard won recognition?
Bands from the south still have a lot of work to do to get recognised north of the Strait and I was surprised to hear many fine Dunedin and Chch bands get little more than a sprinkling of support - but the fact that they were nominated is a good start and I look forward to seeing some southern success next year. On that note and possibly starting something I can't finish.... The B-Nets are 3 years old now and for the past 3 years have been held in Auckland. Could next year perhaps be time for a host city change? Maybe a move to the South Island would help boost the national recognition of music outside the main northern centres?
Stand outs for the evening? The OJ and Slave reunion rap, King Kapisi pepping, HDU, the intro short featuring celebrity MCs stabbed, shot, and run down, Chris Knox sharing a moment with us from Invercargill , Dub Connections winning seemingly against all the odds and the Mikey Havoc/Peter Urlich National Anthem - yeah classic Havoc stuff I know, but I couldn't help but wonder if things would've been a little more compelling for the audience if Mikey had MCd the whole thing?
As for excluding Shihad, I don't agree. I mean for starters what's your criteria for exclusion? If it's a public vote award than it's down to the public and popular bands like Shihad and Salmonella Dub are popular for a reason. If you start excluding bands simply because they are commercially successful than it's no longer about the music anymore is it?
I guess the point is that Shihad have ...
I guess the point is that Shihad have huge publicity campaigns and thus an unfair branding advantage due to their weight. Don't rule them out, but I reckon it's essential to get everybody's music in front of people so they can actually vote through hearing the music rather than just recognizing the name. The voting should be online only and all the videos, cover art and streaming audio should be there to watch. Make it TV like, interactive and fun to vote rather than a huge list of (unless your up with the play) unrecognizable content. Otherwise it's just a fantastic excuse for the industry and musicians to get together and get pissed... which sounds like a dam fine way to build our community, just a shame I missed out on a ticket but I'll be there next year pissed and laughing it up!! Might even get my own chance to belly rub with Mr Havoc.

Bit of a dark horse, wasn't it? You'd think, with a public voting system that the 500+ NZM members and the entire listenership of Radio 1 would have battled it out for top honours in this category. At least, that's what I expected. Maybe the dance scene is even bigger than we imagined...

.8-) Thanks Aaron. A labour of love indeed. Watch out for the new look NoiZyland, which *should* be launched later this week. And thanks in general to all the people who have helped out and given me feedback over the last couple of years (some of whom are on this discussion board) -- that's what makes it all worthwhile.
And what are the chances of getting the awards held in Wellington next year? Does Auckland have to have a monopoly on the event?

For the past 3 years the Awards have been held in Auckland because they started as the BFM Awards and are a great moneymaker/profile builder...
After grumbles from the rest of the b-net, tacit agreement was made for this year's awards to be held in Wellington... but this obviously didn't happen.
Given that any AK-based event will always favour the locals, it may be time (as mooted last year) for the Active Aotearoa Music Awards... based in Wellington...

yeah!!!!.... I'm with that Cubey, lets make our own awards.
And Teina's public gallary idea, its the peoples vote they should be there too!

At the end of the day this is becoming a coool online NZmusic community and IS the better site!! Roll on a live CHATROOM at NZM so we can all chat together!mmmmmmm could it be the Bnet awards are becoming as rigged and controled as the RIANZ ones ??

of course it needs to be said that the 'online' voting that occured for these awards could always have been fudged by people in the know. I must say I was even tempted to vote many times but stupidly i voted once - duh!
i think wellies would be able to put ona pretty sexy show indeed.

hey moana... there's actually a simple chat room on the site already... just tune into the radio station (now in the sidebar, look right and up), listen to the fat beats and chat with the dj's and other people on the site... sorry it's a little complicated at the mo but we'll re design it soon... se ya there!!
No doubt welly could turn on a damn ...
No doubt welly could turn on a damn fine event for b-nets 2001... I'm already seeing the Town Hall sold out.... and it would sure be handy but I think I'd prefer to see it go a little further south. The Chch music scene could do with a bit of glamour and the snow down there is just gorgeous this time of year making for some pretty sweet apres awards activities. Might get some of you auckland fullas across the strait for once too ; )
Yeah cheers for the NZM support but I think Loops and samples won straight up. They turned on a bit of a promo drive during the voting - ads on Juice, in music mags etc so they had the most exposure. ah well, next year......
