I'll Tell You A Secret

greetings all who read,
heres a thought that i hope inspires some one to act in a positive artform,

in chch over the past 4-5 years there has been the following bands playing:
- Degrees k - Mountains of Murry - Fuce - Cripple Mr Onion - Deluxe Boy - the cooltones -
'Orkid - Filer - Clowndog - Slim - Jungle Mungus - Bunyip - fusa - grief - Gasoline Cowboy - Solo bravo - slipstream - new damage - thrax mulch - SURFING U.S.S.R - Heavy Jones Trio - "sam dub" "bic runga" "zed" etc - Pacific Underground - countless d.j's - Jamunta - lotsa jazz bands- Pine- Haley westwood hehehehehe - etc etc etc etc etc

most of these acts have some sort of recording you can get localy
some have videos
some even play live and tour

heres the problem
by march/april next year most of these bands will leave for over seas,
and becasuse the industry is based in auckland
no one knows how good this music is,

basicly does it matter?

i think it does, so?

well all i think is that when some of these bands get known in new zealand,
you'll find that its been "meaningful music that matters" in chch for a long time now

so it depends on how you look at it
eithier its a thank you or a fuck you to new zealand music and all it mimicks it self to be

i cant help but notice alot of new zealand bands are just really good versions of something ive seen from america or england,

what is our culture ?

we were "conqured" by the british, yet we're fed american crap on our air waves (due to a contract signed with the u.s after ww2) and our actual land mass is in sth east asia,

definition of good music:
- anything that you will still listian to and enjoy even after 50 years of listianing
because "good" muscians know that they arent makeing music for "fame or money" its too practise the art of music in the same way humans have been for eons,
the minstril who travled the land on his/her craft telling all the people stories via music
as long as the person is honest with them seleves they will make good music

rant rant rant
any way some of the best music i have heard in years is here in chch,
just thought id mention it in case some one likes good music

any feed back ; orkid_music@hotmail.com
but be careful i might try to give you an album, unless you want to pay for it.

Forums: NZ Music,

i miss chch!! :( how long till orkid hit the 09 huh?

i also live in a city that is not really anything special as far as the music scene is concerned, any one who is totally serious about it will go to a big city. So the old, lets call it the 'christchurch phenomina' hapens all over the world. The only way to avoid it is to stick to the main drag where everyone goes, whatever, Auckland, London, Amsterdam even. But what I have discovered in living in these samller out of the way places is that apart from sometimes terminal boredom and once I get over myself for being the only NZer in a thirty km radius (at least) is that I keep finding these really great small bands that no-one has ever heard of. Sometimes there are good reasons why they never make/made it, drugs or a shitty record deal or something, but most of the time they are just part of the unluckly yet talented.

So I started collecting demos, at gigs or festivals, and this makes the music even more beautiful in that can take it with me somewhere else and play it to you or whoever who would never get the chance to hear it.

And one other thing.. Im sure it doesnt apply to you, Gilbert, but I heard a local music radio show in the weekend and it had these two female vocalists out of different local bands, and it must have been quite embaressing for them and the announcer, because they had never once seen each other live, and the interview was cut short. Especailly when they played the music and it was realy similar. So there are plenty of bands that put their head down and ignore the rest of the world around them. I cant think of anything better than having an audience full of musicians, they are the ones who are going to actually notice what you are doing.

The only way to try and kill the crap is to grab all of your friends and take them to a gig of a band you've never seen before..
