Ok. I was in Christchurch during the weekend and saw the best band in the world play twice in one night. I was totally unprepared for what Degrees K was going to do to me. This band hold the key for all music. Complex and simple, heavy and gorgous, melodic and dischordant, groovy and brutal. I was watching this band and heard everything I love, and have learnt, in music over the past fifteen years. This band is the most inspired thing I have heard in years.
I must also mention the Mountains of Murray as they were also totally sublime. What is in the water down there?

Haven't found any mp3s for 'Dergrees K' yet but like most recent guitar band shit i'd expect them to be vaguely alright but way overated by people desperate for something that really is important to come along. Anyway.... where can you find their mp3s
"Critically acclaimed" but
overated music examples: Mercury Rev
The Strokes
The Vines
The Hives (snore inducing shit)

Degrees K do remind me a little of the SJFs, perhaps if the later were crossed with don cabalerro. I havn't listened to the recordings closely yet , but I hope they simply capture what I heard at the jet set.
I don't think anyone is foolish enough to admit that the strokes etc are important. If you do then you have absolutely no sense of history.

heh heh I sense this is a bigger conversation than I have time for right now so I will have to give you my (carefully considered) answer this evening. however the most excruciatingly obvious response is that any band that attracts as much attention and sparks as much debate as they have, is obviously important on a cultural level.

let me start by saying that I only ...
let me start by saying that I only really care about bands that are musically important. Culture is unfortunately channeled through the media and therefore distorts, so a culturally important band is often only a product of the people they impress. So in that case a band like the strokes, while very good and with pure energy, they are only significant because we have been told they are. If I had heard the band before any 'hype' I would have thought they were simply a clever rock and roll band that sounded like joy division, tom petty and the stooges. I may have even bought the record. Also any music that seems so strongly linked to such a fashionable 'new movement' simply doesn't sit with me. And its undeniably retro. For me, orginal thought is the hardest and most rewarding thing to strive for.
While degrees K sit in the math rock/post rock camp ( I hope I don't offend the band with this) they push it to the limits and use it not as the end in itself , but as a way to translate the dynamics of the band . A traditional band that will as a rule play in 4/4 and keep to standard progressions and chords has obviously limited themselves ( which often works) but with degrees K they have all these options open to them and they use them with taste and measure in a way that is fluid and gorgous and mean. And the vocals are quite special, with unusual melodic lines punctuated with less than obvious harmony.
This band is interesting.thats the bottem line. they surprise and take you on a spastic trip that no straight rock and roll will do. I'm in love with them. Its all that music should be for me.

must admit. Hollis is on to something. Who saw them last night in Wellington or in Auckland on Friday?. I saw both gigs, and FUCK. I've seen them before and have always loved them, but this latest tour was definately something special. If you have the chance to see them and you don't, then you should be very upset.

yep, I totally agree.
friday night was an absolute pleasure, only concreting my opinion of the band.
So incredibly tight and interesting, and hell bent on delivering thier vison with passion and soul......it is so rare.
I was a bit disappointed that I didn't hear some of the songs that I heard in christchurch at the jet set, but I think they were part of the encore.
The slow songs could be a bit less straight, but the rock numbers are close to godlike.
Shame about certain girls in the audience that couldn't get past the 'hotness' of the band members(sic).
bro!!! you should have seen them in ...
bro!!!
you should have seen them in welly, getting a huge wellington response with people dancing as opposed to the ol' auckland head nod, they went off. A much more raucous set, last time i got this excited about a nz band was the datsuns.
I felt so out of place in auckland, aucklanders need to shake it more. Shit, i can't dance, but there is no way i am going to stand still when a band like that is going off.
Wellington goes off. bands should tour here more, best punters in the country.

ahhh. that was actually me, andrew was just using my computer last. Fuck my computer is a slut. But andrew does feel similar. I don't think he dances though.....being from dunedin and all:)
yeah, Auckland audiences are fucked on ...
yeah, Auckland audiences are fucked on the whole. just stand off-ish and a bit conscience of themselves. Of course, I just want to see and hear the band play, dancing at a gig isn't really my kind of thing, but i'll certainly woop and holler if the moment takes me.
Sorry to hear about your flat problems Andoru, but Wellington is never a bad option. Hope the recording went well.
