b.Net Awards

I went to the b.Net awards tonight. None of the bands I voted for won.

Salmonella Dub won heaps of awards, but after a bombastic opening set they had to leave to play at the St James, so a friend of theirs accepted the awards on their behalf. Actually, come to think of it, it seems that most of the winners weren't there. Possibly because they were out performing elsewhere.

Chris Knox spoke for many of us when he asked, "what the fuck is 'downbeat'."

Why the hell did the video for "Scribe 2001" get nominated for best video? It's cool song, but the video is so budget-arse. Che Fu's "Fade Away" video won.

I have this feeling that a lot of the winners were picked because they were popular, not because they were good. Rock seemed to be largely ignored in favour of dancey and/or electronic acts.

What the fuck is downbeat?

Forums: NZ Music,

DUH!!!!

down beat is when the bass beat is on every other beat. instead of going on the 1st and the 3rd beat of the bar, it goes on the 2nd and 4th...I think. so ur going down with the pedal when usually u wouldnt...does that make sense??

yeah, it surprises me that Chris Knox should ask that, as Hamish Kilgour often uses a downbeat, I think Vehicle is full of them ... unless he's referring to the electronic/dance genre? Which is technically the same thing ...

Looking at the list of downbeat nominees, its pretty clear they mean the electronic/dance genre, rather than what you're mentioning. I think downbeat has had a bit of a change in meaning in this particular arena, away from how it has been defined in formal musical terms (i.e. involving the timing of the bass beat) to say something about tempo as well - its a slower form of music than house/techno, probably not as regular - more chilled, not quite trip hop.

I was quite surprised actually to see Black Seeds as a downbeat nominee - they strike me as more up tempo than the sounds I associate with downbeat - but this is hardly an exact science here. The audiogalaxy site gives its take at this link:

I find this comment by Chris rather ironic.

It is EXACTLY the same as some late 30-early40 something git way back in 79 after just hearing of Toy Love for the first time, saying 'What the Fuck is "Punk Rock"'.

Maybe its time for the rest-home for Chris - or Robyn.

geddalife!!

sheesh!

It's not the same thing at all. There are so many different names for genres these days it's quite possible for someone to have never heard of one before - most likely because they use a different name for the same thing.

of course it is, Joe. The 70's had many, many different genre names for variations of rock. Some have survived, some havent.

Just because you're not currently up to date with genre names (and I'm not saying that I am) doesnt discount their validity. Ahh the youth of today!

Or is it that you need your walking-frame? :)

hahaha - down beat is a label for a style of music that is like hiphop but not, cos hiphop is about more than just music, labels are crap. but everyone seems to need names for things so they fit into their nice little boxes. sorry chris, just the way the world works!

Paddy Free from Pitch Black was the friend that collected the awards for Salmonella Dub.

Welly romped home with Rhombus most promising new act & The Black Seeds picking up an award.

Plus guitar seemed represented by Flying Nun who got 3 awards. 1 for betchadupa as best pop/rock release, one for Under The Influence as Best Compilation, and GREAT to see The D4 win Best International Achievement!

Was interesting to note that there was not a single guitar band in the MOST PROMISING NEW ACT catagory...an oversight by the b-nets, or a genuine sign of the musical times ?

Now I know we have all had the chance to vote on the winnersd in the categories, but were our votes the only thing which decided who would win? If so, that would explain why it was the popular choices who won.

Something else I don't know is how the original selections were arrived at - play-listing on B-Net stations, listener requests, pick x names from a hat, some PD's personal faves.

Can't remember who won what for all - but was pleased that Phoenix Foundation won best unreleased song - tho' it was at the expense of Paselode, and I quite like the Goods track as well. And I have to say, I am a Flying Nun guy from way back, but Under the Influence doesn't rate highly with me - but then I look at what its up against and, I don't know, none of the compilations really spke to me. I have a pick for next year already, though - LOOP 3 is a fantastic, abso-bloody-lutely perfect pair of CD's.

I believe that the nominees were picked by the PD's of each bNet station and then it was up to us to vote on it. One of the problems then is to get people to act and vote. I don't know what the exact system is but it seems to me that with Auckland having most of the population, it is up to us in the rest of the country to get off our arses and give them a run for their money but getting everyone we know to vote. But yes, then the popularity vote does come in to play. There's just no combatting that...I think it's choice that we all get to pick the winners, rather than some anonymous panel of judges!

Yo Peoples.

The B-Net awards are chosen by the people!

So of course the winners were the most popular bands not 'the best' (which quite frankly is only a matter of opinion as i have not been able to find a book about what makes a good band...).

And may I also add how the FUCK did TrinityRoots not pick up a single award? Has anyone seen them live (hard to imagine a more awe inspiring act anywhere in the world right now)?

As far as the most promising act thing I was just talking to someone about it and at first we were annoyed at the lack of variety, and then we realised we couldn't think of that many guitar bands who could have been in there (maybe Carriage H?).

//TrinityRoots not pick up a single award? Has anyone seen them live (hard to imagine a more awe inspiring act anywhere in the world right now)?
seen them live, got the cd,......... a more inspiring act??? not sure but the gig a week or so back would be in my top 5 ever,
True is a stunning album quite capable of taking my breath away and the vid of little thing never fails to make me wait to cry......... yes a travisty that they didn't get any awards

Yo Aka.

I know that 'awe inspiring' stuff is very over the top and cheesey. I let my outraged self get over emotional, it is unproffesional (hmm surprisingly confusing to spell just then...) and I promise it will NOT happen again!

(You know what I mean, anyway.)

//So of course the winners were the most popular bands not 'the best' (which quite frankly is only a matter of opinion as i have not been able to find a book about what makes a good band...). //

yeah okay then but why then add this.....

//And may I also add how the FUCK did TrinityRoots not pick up a single award? Has anyone seen them live (hard to imagine a more awe inspiring act anywhere in the world right now)?//

2 crontadicting remarks me thinks - maybe it's just that people who have only a passing interest in music vote for the groups they happen to have heard of.

mayb you should simmer down on the big word action rdor.. or are you takin the piss outta rudy's spell master styles

thankes, i needed taht

why no Trinity Roots awards? Because AK/NZ still believe there's nothing else out there that surpasses Sal Dub on that live rock dub tip. I think many of those who voted can only remember their E experiences on Takaka Hill where Sal Dub really blew shit up. Simply the reason why Trinity Roots didn't get the awards they should have was because they're True album really doesn't represent they're typical live sound. For instance. You hear the Sal Dub album - you go to the gig - not really much difference at all - both mediums are quite similar. You hear the True album - you go to the gig - you're hearing the songs live but man are they different live! It's a misunderstanding. I guess more thought should go to in to the voters decisions, and if AK wasn't so "safe" perhaps Trinity Roots would have won a few awards in place of Sal Dub. Perhaps the awards should inturn be in Wellington next year?

I was actually disappointed that Rhombus won best new act, or whatever it is. They are more a colaboration than a new act.

ive seen trinity roots and sal dub live twice each this year, and they have been excellent shows. I think Sal Dub are the more polished though.
