My new disc seems to be either corrupted or (more likely) encrypted.
I rip all my CD's to high quality MP3's and use my Mac G4 as a large jukebox (~7000 tracks). I use a hard drive based portable MP3 player (Apple iPod) for music on-the-go.
When I stick the new Shihad in my CD drive it firstly just ejects it, then the 2nd time will actually get the track listing but then will not play, it just spins up continuously.
The CD has a small extra track on the outside like you would see on a multimedia disc, but I suspect it's actually a corrupted data track designed to stuff up CD-ROM's (see http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chip.de
%2Fpraxis_wissen%2Fpraxis_wissen_8725919.html&langpair=de%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8
&safe=off&prev=%2Flanguage_tools ). I've tried the trick of blanking out part of the extra track, but it didn't work.
I brought my disc from planetjack.com in Christchurch airport on Friday night (didn't have a cD player with me, but just *had* to have the disc :-)
It won't play properly in my car cd player either, it keeps skipping to the next track from the middle of some. I have had it playing in a standard CD player though.
Has anyone else had the same problems, do your CD's appear to have an extra track?
And if anyone wants to know what I think of the CD? ... well as a long time (12 years) Shihad fan who's seen them play far too many times to remember, I'm not that impressed, perhaps it's a good thing they changed their name after all cause it's only half them, the other half is some american nu-metal power pop thing. I think I need more listens though, pity I can't listen to it very often ;-(

WEA are listed on fatchucks.com as putting out corrupt CD's as well.

This is pretty fidgety but I have heard that coloring in the edge of the CD (the corrupted, or encrypted file) with a marking pen lets your puter read the file, these new encrypted discs have fried many a Mac………….so be careful.
P.S. a G4 is a pretty expensive Jukebox.

I've read about all the tricks I can find and I tried a small piece of masking tape (I don't want to mark the disc just yet in case I return it for being corrupt). It didn't work, but I'll experiment again tonight. I also haven't tried it yet in another CD-ROM, hopefully one of my Linux boxes will do the trick. I was worried about the Mac frying too ... but in the end my wanting to listen to the disc got the better of my caution :-)

The Weapons of Mass Destruction disc didn't work for me either. In the end I used Exact Audio Copy to rip the wav's (on a PC ;-(. Interestingly it told me the discs were protected.
I'm interested in what hardware/software are people using to rip these discs and what results are you getting?
Now that I can listen to it often I've decided it's a great disc, still has a heavy 'nu-metal' american influence, but the Shihadness shines through!

I encode all of my CDs to my monster playlist, the new Pacifier is dodgy.
Disc1 track 2 is fucked, just won't encode, does about half then skips to the next one.
Disc2 is just not readable and ejects after my machine trys to read it after about 5mins of trying.
Mega disapointed about the shodyness of all this. :(

The CD drive in the G4 must have something in it (or not in it) that prevents reading some corrupt CD's. Last year while I was ripping the bulk of my collection I came across 2 discs that the Mac wouldn't read, one from 1996 which I presume is corrupt and the other was Salmonella Dub's Killervision. My PC at work did read them though. These CD's do not seem to be encrypted, just very badly made.
On the subject of ripping on a PC try to use a LAME encoder (MusicMatch is not). By far the best ripper seems to be Exact Audio Copy followed by using LAME as the encoder, I have a fairly heavily rock oriented collection and these combinations have produced the cleanest results. LAME can also be used on the Mac, especially if your using OS X, just download the source and compile, if you're using iTunes or SoundJam you can get an applescript from http://www.malcolmadams.com/itunes/ that'll use LAME instead of the iTunes Fraunhofer encoder (in Music Match too). I've found http://www.r3mix.net to be a good starting place for info about this stuff.

I had a weird problem with the Weapons of Mass Destruction cd-originally it wouldnt play in my car stereo originally. Now it's fine but it had to sit in there making alot of crazy noises before it played.
