AND THE WINNERS ARE....

Hi Guys, this is a long one, sorry, results from the latest funding round from NZ on Air. Video, New Recording and Hit diskies. Thoughts?

Music Videos
The first funding round for the new funding year.  The good news is that the
budget for doing music videos has been increased - this funding year, we will do
110 projects (compared with 100 last year).
But even with an increase in the budget, it's still tough.  We can only do an
average of 18-19 projects in each two month round.
In this first funding round for the new year, we got 86 applications.  Of the
86, 48 made it to the first shortlist.  That's 48 contenders.
We will do 18 projects.  Each project will get $5,000 to make a music video.
Decisions are based on airplay potential after testing the songs with music
video broadcasters and taking into account current radio priorities.
* Antenna Recordings/Pluto/Perfectly Evil
* Antenna Recordings/Tadpole/Rock 'n' Roll* Antenna Recordings/Ubana/One
* Festival Mushroom Records/Carly Binding/For What It's Worth
* Flying Nun Records/betchadupa/Life Will Be The Same
* Intergalactic Records/Mama Said/Elements
* Kog Transmissions/Concord Dawn/Morning Light
* Kog Transmissions/Unique/Outspoken* Mai Music/D2S/Ride With Me

* Universal Music/Elemeno P/Saturday* Universal Music/K'Lee/Tonight
* Wildside Records/Bryan Bell/Baggage New Recordings
Another 8 new recording projects out of another massive mailbag of 172
applications.
Each project will get $5,000 to record a song for radio.  Decisions are based
on commercial radio airplay potential, using commercial radio expertise and
experience and testing the songs with commercial radio programmers.
* Pick Up The Pieces by Crumb (Antenna Recordings)
* Downtown by DJ Raw (2Much Music)
* Maybe Tomorrow by Golden Horse (Siren Records)
* What's The Story by Mighty Scoop (Independent)
* C'mon Hallelujah by Paselode (Wildside Records)
* R-R-R Rhombus by Rhombus (Moko Entertainment)
* Fooling You by Scooter (Soulfire Entertainment)
* I'll Go by Taisha (Manawa Productions) Radio Hits
[based on airplay in the April/June 2002 quarter]
Another 7 Radio Hits rebates for songs that have picked up significant
airplay on commercial radio in the second quarter of 2002.  Each project will
get $5,000 (or the actual cost of recording and releasing the single, whichever
is the lesser).
Decisions are based on analysing the RadioScope airplay charts which are in
turn based on airplay returns from 146 radio stations around the country.
Note that songs that have picked up significant airplay in this quarter but
have already been funded via the Phase Four Album or New Recording schemes are
not eligible for Radio Hits funding as well.
* Falling In Love Again by Anika Moa (Warner Music)
* Synchronise Thoughts by P-Money (Dirty/Kog Transmissions)
* Exit To The City by The D4 (Flying Nun Records)
* S U I T by Blindspott (PMF Incorporated/EMI New Zealand)

Forums: NZ Music,

Tadpole have a song called "Rock 'n' Roll". Is this their attempt to jump on the nu-rock bandwagon and follow in the Datsun's footsteps?

nu-rock? nu-rock? aaaaaaagggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh!

nice to see Paselode on the list.

isn't it just. i'm stoked.
congrats to crumb too - welly rock rocks.

yay go paselode - you guys will be famous rock stars soon

Are you allowed to use "The Datsuns" and "Nu Rock" in the same sentance???? I fucking think NOT! Good to see "Scooter" and "Bryan Bell" made a showing, I can't wait to hear this new album from Mr. Bell. Do Tadpole and Bic REALLY need Govt. funding? WELL DO THEY?????

come on you guys know this nu old rock and roll thing is totally the datsuns. It just isn't cool saying that because it might have connitations to nu metal which it doesn't or connitations to a trend. I mean a 1 year ago there was no strokes,hives,white stripes all over the media now there is.
But i am sure those bands were playing just like the datsuns are now.

so harrah!!

rock is back! but for how long is what i want to know

I guess "Nu Rock" describes The Datsuns, D4 and Hives better than anything else. I think I reacted badly to the tag initially because it instantly brought images of Linkin park and Def Leppard and stuff. Sweet as. Now, instead of dishing out NZ on Air Money to the major labels, why don't we offer Michael Hill a WINZ benefit or Perhaps give Coca-Cola a new business grant aye?
Check this link out, it's cool...

I prefer "noveau rock" but I'm a sucker.

haven't we had both these discussions before?

yes which is why I wonder at the big fuss.

Oh no, I feel so naughty for saying nu-rock.

What I was really getting at was the potential bandwagon jumping of Tadpole. And I'm sure there'll be other bands who make a subtle change in direction to fit in with the new popularity of rock 'n' roll.

Just like there were a bunch of lame Nirvana clones in the mid-'90s, there's bound to be groups coming out with mediocre attempts at the napalm-fuelled, mind-blowing, glorious musical experience that the Datsuns are. I will call those bands nu-rock.
