RECORDING (chch or welly)

hi there.
my band is looking for somewhere to record before the end of this year, but only in chch or welly. we require:

reasonably cheap rates (scummy student rates actually)
a fairly talented producer and/or one who actually wants the shit to turn out nice
a studio suited to a range of melodic ranging to hard rock from 5 piece band

so yeah if ANY of you know any deals just put them on here. thanks. we are not toooooo shit so any producer who reads this, post your details maybe you'll enjoy working with us.

I recon your best bet is to do it yourselves. We have just purchased a 16 track digital recorder, and are in the process of doing our 2nd cd ourselves. Once you have the gear and learn to use it, the sky's the limit, and you can then do for others and get some money back!!

ok, i've heard of a recording course (nz recording & production institute or something) in chch that supposedly houses the best studio in the garden city - dunno how true this is?

has anyone done this course? anyone know someone whos doing it?

Jimi, I know you say Welly or Chch, but if nothing comes of that, and you're looking at recording courses, I have a suggestion for you: Hamilton. Waikato Polytech (or whatever they call themselves these days, Wintech?) runds a music production course, as part of which you get a truck load of recording time for your fees. The new album from the Dubious Brothers was done there, for free, and is very nicely done.

ooooh wicked, just like below - however i guess they would have a range of producer people, so one of them would surely be keen :p

contact details? preferably email

jimi chch would be a waste of time.
go to wellington or auckland

nah i don't reckon man. this isnt for release or anything i don't think. we just want to get ourselves down on cd. so it would be a relatively small run of about 5 cd's. therefore doesn't have to be amazing but we would like it to actually represent what we sound like

Andoru that's crap .... jimi - try nightshift - it's analogue 16 track and will do what you need - just make sure that the engineer doesn't override your wishes - (he's an old 70s muso with a reputation for having phaser footswitches on channels under his desk ;-p) - you'll be able to whack it all down, over dub and mix in a day (or two if you want). Plenty of fat sounding recordings have come out of there - eg squirm ...

wicked bro, would this 70's guy be interested in our new stylez rock tho? phaser is cool anyway ;)

contact details???

venn in wellington, i would second that also, bro. If Dave ain't too busy, seeing as he is the shit. You cunts should pay for me to come down on the ferry one day to listen to your shit and i can do some semi-average producing.....or at least tell you what sounds shit and what doesn't. At the very least i guess you'd get some kick ass pics out of it.
Or if you are just looking for a demo, record at zeal (fxaudio) $15 ph for college students, then select some tracks and go record somewhere wicky like venn.

well if we ever get some money bro - tho i think we are lookin at being able to transport ourselves first off aye :p ............ and no offense but as wise as you are, just cos u say it's shit doesnt mean we would scrap it. artistical integrity and all that.

zeal, good quality? and would that be all playing at once or tracking instruments seperately? producer?

cheers dude

you a semi average producer now blink?

// semi average producer

below semi-average..more like it. somewhere between crap and not so crap.

// just cos u say it's shit doesnt mean we would scrap it

of course not bro, not my place. perhaps i should of said "tell you what kicks ass and what doesn't kick ass not quite yet"

zeal will track it for ya for that price. good quality for $15 an hour buddy. that includes engineer who will do a bit of studio production for you, but no pre-production unless you arrange something with him (matt)

phatarse mate. wasn't meaning to belittle your exquisite musical taste at all (cos i don't really know it).

zeal sounds good aye. this is really dumb i know, but what parts of recording are pre-prod. and which are studio prod. yeah clueless but you have to find out sometime....?

pre-production

ie. tweaking your songs in practises before recording, working the arrangments better, having someelses input who hasn't heard the songs a million times over, what works and what doesn't. working on melodys etc. Basically getting songs fuckn sorted so you can nail it straight away when you record and they will be arranged the best they can.

in studio production

ie. making sure you get the best out of your gear, working with you to get the best sound from your amp, gats and shit. coming up with ideas to fill gaps/empty sonic spots that you prehaps didn't notice during pre-production. (all this is not an engineers job, so don't expect it. You can ask him if he'll do this, he may or may not be keen.)

cheers.

//all this is not an engineers job, so don't expect it. You can ask him if he'll do this, he may or may not be keen.)

i realise this is asking a lot but we would really like someone actually interested in our music to do it - the thought of a producer sitting there bored, just going thru the motions in the studio really fucks me off. maybe i'm expecting too much but i'd like to think part of a producer's job (like, what we would pay him/her for) would be helping the recording sound good.

also would pre production cost the same as in studio, or more? how can i get in touch with zeal?

you'll find email/phone for Matt Barnes (fxaudio) on the zeal site. http://www.zeal.org.nz

If you get a really experienced producer, they will do both for you. however it may cost some money, especially since you'll need them to come to several of your practise's and then come to wellington with you. Just work out what you can afford, then offer it to soemone you respect with studio experience. Ask anyone you respect in Nelson to come along to your practises and have a listen to your stuff, you will soon see who has the talent to produce, some think they can (me) but suck, others fuckn rule.

don't get to hung up on production if you are just recording a demo, just produce it yourselves, then once you've demoed, save some money up, send that demo to some people you would like to work with and then go record again.

Just step outside of yourselves, listen to your songs objectively, and as a wise man said to me last night "you can't polish a turd". So work on your best songs, trim the fat, get rid of unnessesary shit, try different ideas, take out gats where there are gats, add in gats where there are none, work on tightness as a unit. work on the songs dynamic shit. but you know this, you guys got a high score in the rockquest so you prob know how to write songs.

yes well.. mmm she says pondering the wise man's comment.. that is so so true.. but u can possibly make it less shit?
no ideas on the main topic of this, some good advice has already been posted..

Try MAINZ or "The Venue" in Rangiora

mainz, yeah thats a good studio i've heard. do you have tech details/a contact email or something i could get details from? for either place

ups mate

I'll try and find out the details for ya. I know MAINZ is in the CHCH Polytech or near it. And i think they both charge for useage of the drumkits there.
