Bands!!! Start gigs earlier in the night

> Start gigs earlier in the night...
hear hear! I am old and crusty, and falling asleep by midnight ('specially with a couple of drinks in me). And paying babysitters to stay in past the witching hour is a nightmare.
I realise bands always want to wait to 'just a few more punters come in through the door', but if we can get bands playing to specific times, people will turn up at the alloted time, instead of trickling in around 11ish (which seems to be the earliest you'll get a headline acr on nowadays). And support bands -- go on when you're told! If you're told 10, that's 10, not 10.30!
Right, that's my wee rant, probably does need to live in another thread...

Forums: NZ Music,

i so agree. especially if you wanna make a night of it, like after work, bite to eat then a show at 9 sharp. Headline acts should NEVER start after 10:45.

Absolutely. Especially weeknight gigs... some of us do have to get up in the morning, unfortunately.
In fact, we're going to start our next gig at 6pm! Well, ok, that might be overdoing it just _slightly_ in general, but this particular gig is a uni thing, so the early-evening-immediately-after-lectures thing sort of makes sense.
But yeah, I've never understood why bands generally start so late.

Probably showing my dirty dunedin dronerock boy roots here, but I'm hurt & betrayed if the /support/ act starts before 10:45. & if the headliners start before midnight, kilgour forbid . . .
(& I'd say bands start late so more punters drift in, & to get those already ensconced a tad more plastered . . . )

// I'd say bands start late so more punters drift in...

that's the theory, innit? But I don't think it would take long for people to adjust their schedules and drift in a little earlier if they realised acts were going start playing at the advertised time.

I'm sure, if a 10pm main act start time does become a reality, it'll be nothing personal against you, trystereo...

more punters drift in, but there would be quite a few who can't be arsed to go. I've piked on more than one occasion for exactly that reason. It'd have to be a pretty special gig to get me out on a "school night".

bands wait for people to arrive, people know that the bands don't start early so they turn up later, bands keep waiting. everyone is too tired/bored to care by the time anything happens.
also, whats with all the screwing round between sets? it doesn't take that long to switch gears.

// I'd say bands start late so more punters drift in...

I have to say, that the last three gigs ive been to, 5 bands for 5 bucks kinda things, by the time the last bands on everyones left to go home or go into the city or whatever. Personally I stay till the end of most gigs, but i reckon it would be a really cool idea if everyone got their arses into gear and started earlier, that way we could listen to EVERYONE:D

I reckon they make people wait so they can ply them with more beer :D

But yeah I agree bands go on way too late I thought it was always because it makes the audience go round a bit more. Ie an early gig at Valve finishes around 10:30pmish and then everyone goes to Indigo to catch another band. Don't know if this is the case but it would make sense

i went to see eight and goodshirt at leftfield on a thursday night. i had to leave before goodshirt even got on stage because i had to work the next day.
late gigs on friday and saturday i can accept, but on a thursday? how fucked is that? did i get it wrong when i assumed most people work or go to school / uni on fridays?

I thought I'd be knacked Friday morning after the Datsuns but nope, a-ok.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one thinking this. Gigs should definitely start and finish earlier.
Anyone from a band, or a venue, want to comment?

My Hates at pub gigs
--Support bands who play for more then 30 minutes when the crowd obviously isn't enjoying their music.
--Support bands who play longer then the headliners, or who make the headliners have to rush through their changeover and set, just so people don't leave.
--Headline bands who take 20 min to set up gear and then wait off stage for 15 minutes once gear is set up......ONCE you get the gear ready PLAY fuck it.
--Opening bands who don't want to play until there are more people--IT'S NOT YOUR GIG...just fucking play, people will come in when they hear you playing.

I find the timing of gigs really frustrating.....i was meant to take some photos of anika moa a month or so back at Indigo, I turned up at 11:15, thinking i would easily catch the last half hour of her set, but i got there just as she finished. I wouldn't have minded, but i am so used to gigs at Indigo going to at least 12.
If a gig is going to be finished early...it NEEDS to be advertised.

I reckon gigs should finish at 12 or just after, during the week maybe an 11:30 finish is warranted.

i really agree with absolutely every point.

It's weird, cos I didn't think it bothered me all that much - I'm into staying out late as much as the next insomniac music fan, but lately I've been waking up the next day thinking 'how lame, it didn't need to be that late'. i also think it's not something that is all that annoying every now and then, but now it seems to be a standard that headliners come on at 12:30 - 1 ish.

also, a lot of people that are interested in going to see bands ask me when it starts. when you say the opening act says 9 - 9:30 (which you know means 10 - 10:30) and the other bands are 60 minutes after that for each band... you see them do the math and switch off. I reckon bands think they might be getting more punters by waiting, but unless the punters are on 'disco' stimulants I'd say more and more are just not bothering...

I'd fully support bands that publish (on posters etc) start times FOR THE WHOLE LINE UP and stick to it.

A couple of months ago I went to see The Managers play at Voodoo lounge.
9pm 'start time'

9:30 - Bar basically empty, went elsewhere
10:30 - A few more people, still no band playing
11:20 - Ran into a friend comming up the street, she said they still hadn't started
11:40 on the way home, walked past - still no bands playing

Fortunatly, when I orginally stopped in at 9:30 I decided to go elsewhere.
I would have been happy as to be there if they just stuck to the original 9pm start time.
I'm sure quite a few people did the same as I, they went in, saw nothing was happening, and left again.
People don't like to stand around.

Now the Temple (www.temple.co.nz) they stick to their start times.
I like the Temple.

whoa i didnt even mean to do that...

The Dux is excellent -- although I think they kinda 'benefit' from being restricted by local noise control laws. It's that thing of everyone knowing that the support acts going to be on about 9.30ish, and the main act 10.30-11ish, that means everyone's turning up at the right time.

All that's needed elsewhere is for bands (and the venues) to get consistent with their scheduling, as the Dux has been doing for as long as they've been having live music.

True-dat! The Dux definately rocks:) Didja catch the Eklektic/ Verse2/ Jahmen/ FUSA gig there about 2wknds back? It was raining but there were still people outside watching thru the windows coz it was so packed inside:)

Hip hop gigs down at the Lichfield clubs don't even open the doors till 11:30 - but then theygig virtually all night:)

Maybe we should go back to the old 3:00pm Sunday matinee that The Beatles, Hendrix and Deep Purple used to play.
Maybe that way 'Antic' you can catch the gig straight after Church and an early finish just before 'Coro'-Street starts..........................!

id make that koranation st.

It is so frustrating when you're in a band and you have to wait around for hours for other bands to just fkng play! We played at Valve recently - it was a 5 bands for 5 bucks night - and the first band didn't even start setting up until about 11.30. Meanwhile the 4 other bands after them (and all our friends who had been told by us that the first band would be on @about 10pm) were standing around waiting. It's not like they were waiting for more punters cos the bar was packed. I think if people are there to see a few bands play why not just give the people what they want! It meant that the last band didn't go on till about 2.30 and by then everyone had buggered off into town. I noticed that the first band pissed off as soon as they had packed up their stuff. Grr.

There should be an understanding in place that if the opening band isn't on by a certain time then they forfeit their right to play.

I dont care about how late a gig starts in the weekend. But certainly during the weeknight it is a little hardcore, you just get sleepy & yearn for bed...well I do. But oh well doesnt really effect me terribly, as long I get to see what I want, Im happy.

Ohhh, one more thing that sucks. Like for example the dj craze gig, I heard all this talk from people I know wh are 'in the know' telling me shit that P-money was starting early so I trip down there & wait around for fukking ages had time to go home again. But all in all I never regret it cos I always have a phat night. But when there is much anticipation at a gig it can go the other way & you can have an 'angry' night.

Craze waz dope!:) Can't wait for Q-Bert. ITF's startin' this week as well.

Yeah Craze was wicked, have just got my ticket for the ITF's. Hope to go to the finals in Auckland...

Yeah - @da Summit right? I've already put my leave in @work for the 1st week of Oct - just gotta get my travel sussed now:) P-Money's @da Hybrid tonite - I'm going for a looksy.

i so completely agree - i mean wtf is all these pubs obsession with rugby games every fucken saturday night?? cant they watch it all at home and allow the folk who want to see a band to come in at 7.30pm instead of having ball hungry faggots running round a field?? kick out the jams at 8pm not 11-12pm which for folk like yours truely is hometime.
