Win Lady and MotherFucker From Hell 7"

Forums: NZ Music,

Post your questions for the Datsuns here. The best questions will win.

How did you get your name?
What are your songs about?
How sick of interviews are you gonna get?
If the article and acompaning photos were destined for no-where but Toms filing cabinet, would you still want it written?
What was it like in london?
How many times do you expect to hear these questions over the next few years?

With the emphasis being given to “New Zealand music” (for example, NZ music month and radio quotas), how do you believe the Datsuns fit into the NZ music “scene”? Do you see yourself coming more from the 80’s rock tradition of say Th’ Dudes and Dragon, or more from the indie, flying nun tradition, or are you part of a worldwide revival of rock’n’roll that isn’t specifically a NZ thing?

Can I have one of the 7"s?
If not, why not?

Has Nissan/Datsun offered you any money to change your bands name to The Daewoo?
:-)

So who won already???

during your recent stint in london and alleged label bidding war, what was the stupidist thing a label did to seek your favour?

Do you believe Cambridge is gong to become the next Seattle?

Is it true that Christian used to work in a club in Hamiltron called 'Firecats' as 'Bucket Boy'?

Your dream Datsun?

Are your favourite cars Datsun's??
Yeah dumb question I know, but at least it is a question!!

How does it feel to be surfing the nu-garage wave? Do you feel like part of a movement? What do you think of the Vines/Hives/etc?
Who would you like to tour with?
(& exc. question, teina)

if you were a fruit which one would you be and why?

Are you afraid that you may just be the new "Flavour of the Month" for these competing record labels, and what will be your way of avoiding this happening? It's no secret that after the successes of The Hives, The Strokes and similar alternative rock groups that record labels are after the next big rock band, I hope they don't scupper your incredible invincibilty! And also, when the fuck are you going to play another gig in Dunedin?

Here's my 10 questions worth:
(1) I've heard storys about how you guys tend to break a lot gear and hurt yourselves lots! What happens to all the broken gear after the gig is over and the dust has settled?
(2) Have you got that "band medic" yet? And if yes, is she from Firecats?
(3) Do you think that growing up in small town Cambridge had any effect on the way the band turned out and the stlye of music?
(4) I read an article on you guys last year about how your guitarist lived in Auckland and he would hardly turn up practises but he would be there at all the gigs rocking hard! He sounds like a legend! How did you get over the distance barrier creative wise when it came to writing songs?
(5) The Datsuns seems to be gaining momentum overseas but back at home in New Zealand it seems to be a well kept secret more known to North Islanders. Why did you focus most of your attention on an overseas market as opposed to conquering your homelands first like Shihad, The Feelers, Goodshirt etc?
(6) What defines a rockstar? Is it the clothes? guitars? long-hair? is the karma?
(7) Who are your favorite bands who have influenced your music?
(8) Is the New Zealand music industry viable, or should local bands think about looking offshore before wasting their talent here?
(9) Who writes the songs in the band? And at what age did you start writing songs?
(10) What, in your opinion, is the greatest song of all time?
Please, please will you give me a free copy of your LP?? I really really want one!!!

If you could be Two Lane Blacktop would you, and why?

You toured with the White Stripes in the U.S. and you'll be touring there again in a week. What was/is your impression of the music scene/audience there as compared to the UK? compared to New Zealand? Did touring with White Stripes during all the hype surrounding them, give you any insights into handling the similar situation in which you now find yourselves? Did it have anything to do with signing with V2?

Can't wait to see you guys kick ass tomorrow night. Cheers.

nope, it was 2002, but april. This is why news people have fact checkers. damn. I was originally so proud of this question.

Here's some questions lads:
1) What are your three favourite things to do in your car (datsun of course)?
2) Who's flat is that featured in the Supergyration video? It fucken rocks!
3) Speaking of the video, was it just good lighting or is Dolf's hair normally so soft and shiny? What product , if any, does he use?
4) On a more serious note - Dolf, you have mentioned in the past that you are unsure as to your position on quotas. Any new thoughts?
5) Who sucks up to you guys the most - the media, the labels, or the punters desperate to cash in on your cool?
6) Does it ever piss you guys off being called overnight successes? You've been around awhile...
7) Do you guys keep in touch with old bandmates? Any jealousy from them?
8) If you guys are the 'big thing' in NZ, who are the 'next big thing'?
9) What was the defining moment when you realised that you wanted to become a professional musician?
10) What's the strangest thing that has happened to you guys while on tour? And don't give me 'what happens on tour, stays on tour'.
11) and lastly just for interests sake - what drum gear do you use matt? Is it matt?

Y'know, it's a funny thing. I was sitting in Mercury Plaza tonight enjoying a delicious green chicken curry from the excellent Thai place when the Datsuns walked in and sat down at the table behind me. Seizing the moment I quickly came up with five questions, introduced myself to the lads and conducted a quick interview. None of my questions were quite like these (and I actually would have liked to have used a few of these), but I can say that they were lovely fellows, and they gave a good interview.

can you confirm or deny whether victoria beckham takes it up the arse?

What is the one thing you would never do for the music you create?
What is the one thing you would never do to the music you create?
Considering what you have achieved so far, what are your worst fears for The Datsuns?
Is digital the future?
Do you feel that there is much support for The Datsuns?
What do you do to keep your egos in check?

Does Richard Branson look like Jody Llyods' uncle in real life also?

Who are you hoping to tour with in the near future (and if you could take a band from NZ with you who would you want?)

What do you attribute your 'success' with the european music industry to date? (and just how good is your manager!)

Are you named after my 1986 dream car the Datsun 180b? (And is it important right now to have a 'The' in your name?!)

Most indie NZ bands seem to struggle to get the cash etc together to tour NZ and maybe make an album. How exactly did you get thru a tour in US, UK etc , get an album paid for and done, and all that came after that? Are there any words of wisdom for those trying to make it from here?

Why did you focus on offshore for the album and touring etc?

Rumours are flying around about the nature of your deal with V2. How much can you tell us about the specifics and what are you gonna do next with all that cash and support? How much control will you have?

who's better: Jimmy, Ace, Eddie or the Nuge?

and while in the States, did you take up the chance to drive a red chevrolet to the county line?

Fuck it, whats to lose. HERE are MY questions:

The Datsuns Interview.

Hi guys, this isnt “FOR” anything, Nexus might print it but otherwise I guess its just because I see something really beautiful happening around you guys and I think someone should be documenting it who has been watching for longer than five minutes and has a lil objectivity. I’m also coming to review the gig on Friday as well. I hope this is ok. Tell ya what, I’ll let Tom have final say on what I come up with (Interview + Review) and if he hates it, I’ll shelve it ok? So, here goes:

Given that your stuff is done on vinyl, what are your thoughts on this “BRN AND GET BRNT” thing?

Would you make an appearance on “stickyTV” to tell the kids not to burn CDs? (WHY/WHY NOT?)

Would you make an appearance in “Womans Day” to tell the chicks not to burn CDs? (WHY/WHY NOT?)

Would you feel comfortable singing the National Anthem at an All Blacks game and also making a statement about not burning CDs to the blokes? (WHY/WHY NOT?)

How did the guitars weather a trip around the world? Any new battle scars and accompaning stories?

During your trip abroad, what was the longest period that you wore the same undies without washing them?

How do you feel about the KFC thing now, in hindsight? It looks like they have adopted the riff as a permanent “anthem” , any thoughts?

Slappers or Skanks? (please supply preference)

In 30 years, are you going to be:
A) Filthy Fucking Rich
B) Addicted to stimulants and Touring 10 months out of every 12
C) Living in cambridge spending time with grandkids
D) Bored
(please explain answer)

Is Matt keeping his old drum kit or will flames be painted on a fancy new one?

I want to know how it feels, what is it that you want? Are you happy NOW?…. or is there more? If so, where will it end, do you think?

Christian lost his Dad during the development of “The Datsuns” do you think this has had an impact on the music or direction? (Optional)

Milestones so far? John Peel, yep , ok, but what else?

Compare our local “Scenes” to the ones you witnessed in London and NYC.

Thanks guys, I know some of the questions are a little out of it but I kinda wanted to ease into the ones I REALLY wanted to ask. I wish you well and say THANKS. Oh yeh, if you guys ever want to give me a REAL interview I’m sure we could come up with a really interesting feature!
Lucy
Ps. nzmusic.com, heres an interview, you can have it (wink) (or was that “wank”) (GRIN)

if the datsuns where an animal what sort would it be?

if the datsuns could fight anyone whom would they chose?

and will we ever see matty singing the ballad "this ones for the ladys"?

do you practice self-abuse as much as people say?

...I mean with all that ear shattering noise you make it's got to effect the hearing (lame save)

Is it true that Datsuns spelt backwards is Snustad?

how hard is it to sing up side down?

Do u boys believe that ur fun loving, hard rocking music is forging new paths in New Zealand and International music, or do u think it is a revival of sorts of the old school of rock and roll?

People (a broad term I know) talk about "The New Zealand Sound" or at least, "A New Zealand Sound". Do you believe that there is such a thing (i.e. our scene is not simply a smaller version of others overseas), and if so, do you see your rock as a part of that "Sound", or of something purely your own?

argh too late. Never mind.

Does this all sound the same or different?
