Probably an old debate but i have to say after 2 years of living in Sydney that i'm fucking proud to be from a country where we play decent music that is just plain fucking brillant. Australia is still stuck in the old punk and metal scene. Ever known an australian to be subtle. Can you imagine them singing a song like "not given lightly"? Not likely. NZ music fucking rocks. I had the best time from 94-98 when the music floored it. Supergroove, Shihad, Pumpkinhead, Pash, Loves Ugly Children and every body else from that period. Unfortunatly it went a bit pear shaped with the Feelers and that boh chick but hey there are tons more better stuff coming out. By the way all that NZ vs Australia stuff, it's all media propaganda. They don't even know things like plasters or twink. In fact they know nothing about NZ and our cultures are so far apart it's not funny. All this comrades in arms stuff is bollocks. Viva la musica de nueva zelanda para siempre!!!!

Er, you've obviously not heard any Aussie indiepop/dronerock/hip-hop/garage/etc. If you as a New Zealander react to Australia that way, I'd hate to see you end up in France, let alone India . . .
Australia beats NZ hands down. Yeah, I ...
Australia beats NZ hands down. Yeah, I know - "treason! treason!", whatever... But seriously. I've spent the past year in Melbourne, and Australia has:
- A larger population
- Greater cultural diversity
- Cheap (and goddamn efficient) public transport
- Good chances of a big international act visiting regularly
- A strong-as-nails music industry which is not fueled by media
propaganda and plagued by lousy cheap-imitation American bands
(though there are a few crappies, I admit eg. Killing Heidi, - but come
on...Paul Kelly!).
and finally...
- Kosher restaurants (hey...)
There are probably a few more pro's, and I admit there are some cons as well (every country has it's downs). But all in all, Aus kicks New Zealand's sorry backside.

By those definitions you could argue that the UK and even the US are better than Australia.
It's not a competition. Barring currency and desert-located concentration camps, Australia and NZ are essentially the same country. Many members of my family call both countries home. It costs the same to fly to Australia from Auckland or Welly as it does to get to Dunedin. We have all the same TV programmes. Watch the same sport. Nationals from both countries are free to live in either or both countries.

I had a cool dream that was nearly a video once: all the greedy, shallow, and elitist middleclass blue collar types were all jumping on a barge, cellphones in hand, heading for the "promised land". The best part was they left us in paradise to get on with homegrown creative evolution.

Oh, and can you sort out your website, please? Why did you bin all those great pieces in favour of the "no talent" stuff? Still, no worries.

As much as I can't forgive a certain bunch of Australians for the whole Ansett fiasco (what selfish idiots), I'd like to think that New Zealand and Australia complement each other music wise. Australia is a bigger market not a competitive music scene to NZ. I'd go as far to say that NZ is trying very hard to emulate Australia as more commercial acts come through and Channel Z gets closer to the middle of the alphabet, ZZZ?
(*Groan*) Isn't the Oz vs Kiwiland ...
(*Groan*) Isn't the Oz vs Kiwiland thing just a little dated now don't you think? It's what you argue about when you get too old to get away with the classic "my Dad can beat up your Dad" line:) A lotta Aussies got pissed off about the whole Ansett thing 2y'know. This time last year, saying "fush n' chups" in a public place would'a got you lynched over the ditch... but I digress.
There IZ no better/worse... only different. For instance, Aussie hip hop acts get NO airplay, support or recognition from the industry over there. This years Aotearoa National Hiphop Summit in Aucks will be our 3rd one - they've yet to have one in Oz. They'll eat up anything that comes over the Tasman - Che & Kap's both do really well over there. I've got mates djing over in Brizzie & punters there have never even heard anyone beatmix before! There are some very very talented Australian hiphop/ r&b artists comin' up - but compared to NZ, their scene is in the f*ckin' stone-age so it's harder for them to find decent gigs let alone an enthusiastic label.
Also - this particular "my Dad can beat up your Dad" is music orientated isn't it? Good on ya SoldierBoy, you're prob right... but I bet there are restaurants in France that are better & I hear there are slightly more people in China. My point is... who the f*ck cares? I've gotten along with every ocker I've ever met - they're generally pretty funny & easy going. They just got a little hacked off with all the kiwi's who immigrated & jumped straight on the dole over there. Can't really blame 'em - that's why I'd NEVA live there... too much "kiwi-go-home" crap.

No duh and they didn't handle it very well at all. That is why I am pissed off. You don't hold a country accountable for a business going bust and then demand the business be continued, that is stupid and selfish. Look you got me started, I don't know why you did but you did.

Australia has some damn good shit that rarely makes it over the tasman. they have heaps of styles over there.. If your into powerful rock get some oldschool grinspoon. tis good shit

Pretty much where ever you live there ...
Pretty much where ever you live there are going to be those bands that you absolutely love, but that noone else (out of your little circle) has heard of, and the fact that hardly anyone knows about them is crap, but its like not those peoples fault for not knowing them, they just know other bands, and they could probably string you up for not knowing one of their favourite "local" or less known "non-mainstream" bands too.
You see it is damn near impossible to really judge whose music is better (ie Oz vs NZ) without actually being in both places and hearing all those bands that not that many people know about. You can do the whole patriotic thing and say "NZ is best" but sadly most of us will never know if it is true or not.
Aside from that, on a different issue, I would have to say that NZ music is the shit! I can't get enough of the local acts so yeah.
I know that makes me all the more ...
I know that makes me all the more qualified as i've lived 2 years in London, 2 years in Sydney and dear god 20 years in Auckland. London has the best gigs. Sydney has the best support network for bands (though people in Melbourne will tell you otherwise) and Nz as a whole just rocks like a banshee. So there!

i understand - we got something real special in NZ, no one else can do it like us, it is so distinctive, and so varied.
but Aussie must have the same underground scene, surely? and have a larger proportion of it? i mean, in NZ we have a bit of crud that makes the mainstream radio stations, a good underground scene (criticially better more original), but so does Aussie, surely? you just have to look for it ... perhaps NZ's cities are smaller (duh, of course they are, cleanie) and it's easier to find some nutter in a band ... i mean in Dunners here, it's hard not to find anyone 18-30 who lives adjacent to or north of the Octagon who doesn't know someone in a local band ...

The 'scenes' in sydney and melbourne are massive. there is a huge network of people helping out bands. street press like the drum and revolver. it's way easier to be a band in sydney or melbourne. funny thing is they moan about it haha. i'm just glad nz doesn't play american music like the aussies though. They are still caught up in the blink 182 sound at the moment. Poor sods!
