using music on TV

Can someone who knows more about the 'industry' answer:

How much money is involved when a band's music is used on TV? When Slim's 'Real World' is used by Export Gold, or I heard Betchadupa on - I think it was - a Holden ad and I was curious how much (approximately) they'd earn from that.
And when Havoc & Newsboy play a snippet of 'Enter Spacecapsule' by Gerling during their show, do they have to pay for that?

Forums: NZ Music,

Yes they would all have to pay for the use.
It done through APRA.
You'll generally need to get permission from the copyright holder.... Band or the label.

I WENT TO AN APRA SEMINAR A FEW WEEKS BACK - and a woman from the ozzy apra branch said that the writers share of 3mins of music or music video was about $100 (on TV1 or TV2) or about $60 (for TV3 and TV4) - confused i questioned her about it and she says this is correct.
this is nowhere near the amount i have got!

If anyone has any confusion over this issue like me // please stand up now!

other experience with background music on a TV prog was aprox. $250 for a 30 sec slot.
ads are a different kettle: depending on the music and the ad, up to $20000.

telecom paid rhian sheehan 20k for the use of his song(s). so, that estimate is about right.
