I live in a sizable(?) provincial town in the south island 2 hours drive from the piction ferry. We turn out for gigs... in fact we are so desperate for live sounds we can get 1800 people turning up to rock quest... I have never been to a gig that had less than 300 people at it ( well that's a bit of a fib zed only pulled about 200 but it was r18 and the same week as the gathering and the feelers and tadpole had played in the city in the same week)
look what I need to whinge about is the frequency of bands or tours doing only the main centre I.e. Christchurch sometimes Dunedin and infrequently Invercargil, and hardly ever anywhere off state highway 1
I rubbed my hands together with glee on hearing that flying nun were touring under the influence, rushed to the web site when I saw the post go up on this site, announcing dates and venues....
only to suffer once again disappointment and frustration,... god they taking it to piha in the middle of winter???????
so what's the story glory?
do we smell?
is it costs?
are we just too far away?
have we some how offended the gods of music?
although my ramblings have been somewhat whimsical I would like some semi serious answers about what is involved in touring... I hear it's bloody hard work for very little return...
i know how ya feel man,
living in napier for a few years, that was sweet, lots of bands (thanks to the crew at the state of it), but now im in new plymouth and bands dont wanna come here either.
too many people think were rednecks.
yes there is a lot of rednecks in the "naki" but they all go to dance clubs.
or is it?....bugger me...I was just having another look at those tour dates on the Nun site and...they changed before my very eyes!
It appears that they are still announcing dates as they go, there was an underage gig in *Auckland* that I hadn't seen before, so maybe they'll make it to Nelson and Nu Plymouth after all...or maybe they'll book a show over on the north shore instead - home of the D4!
All I know is I'm dead keen on buying a ticket tommorrow...The D4 will be hard as grandad's nuts after all those UK shows, no doubt.
to be perfectly honest, all we need is the D4 to come back here.
wouldnt mind seeing Pan Am but im not going to bust my balls to get a ticket to them or anything.
mabye they couldnt get a good enuff guarantee for other places?
Where are you really?
Is it a secret?
//2 hours drive from the piction ferry -- could be a hell of alot of places, the south island is a big place.
If its Motueka, then your just plum outta luck, no band in its right mind would tour there ('sept clowndog, and they are just plain nuts, so they dont count) too many crazy towns folk given you the steely eye.
Hey 'Aka' even your nzmusic icon is giving me the 'steely eye' now, you are from 'Mot' you dirty red neck.
mmmm...could be Methven, which would be two hours away from the Picton ferry, if you're in a cherry red & full-blown Mustang and have no respect for the law...oh wait, the UTI tour is going to Methven...
'AKA', can I suggest that you take a mid-winter solstice holiday and catch that ferry to Wellington. It's not that bad in Wellington, you know.
Is Masterton on the State Highway 1? S'pose the Nun bands are gonna have to buy a road map...
hmm well i was excited when i heard about the under the influence tour (previous attempts to see the D4 haven't gone so well) then i read the dates and all aklnd gigs are when im gonna be stuck in bloody masterton for a wedding anniversary :( i do get to spend a day in welly tho, but still that doesnt really make up for it! but hmm maybe on my way to the 04 i can get a nice feed of fish 'n' chips and ice cream :P
yes Nelson, and clowdog do play Mot as does mother guru, and you know I was talking about state highway number 1 in the South Island .....and what is the story with Methven .. that was part of my point if they can go up to Mt Hutt they could bring it to Nelson, same thoughtsa on reading masterton , napier ect please note small towns in the north (but for methven which supports my point) and yes I know welly is a great town, and was looking forward to a direct ferry link but it was announced today that we will not be getting one, which also adds to my sulkly mood and Auckland... been there done that was not all that keen.
ok every one seems to be buzzing about Pluto.. it would have been nice if they could have detoured a bit on their trip to chch
I would have liked to hear D4, betchadupa I saw last year and pan am .. there must be more to them than the grass song
there a list of welly bands too.. two lane black top .. the wee bit you hear on their site sounds interesting.
passlode on nzm radio sound very very good, they can make me stop surfing the web and just listen.
black seed, trinity roots, I drove a nearly 6 hour round trip to see che fu early in the year.
and yeah theres that band you are always on about manamana, i was planning to get off my bum and give them a listen if they turn up any where near this part of the world
but it's not just for me its for all of us who live in smaller towns, in the south chch is god know how many hours drive away, over some very nasty roads.
We'll come to Nelson, in about 3 months when we've all finished Uni. Can we stay at your pad?? And can you tell all your mates to come? And make sure there's a bottle of Vodka handy.
Thanks for the expressed interest!

"a good slapping for being unrealistic"
I would imagine that you've invited the wolf in the door here...on a brighter side, I would also imagine that the promoters of tours look at every option when putting a tour together - perhaps Nelson was considered for the Under The Influence tour, and did not work out, for whatever reason (I dunno, I'm guessing) - personally, I've had a great time in Nelson during the summer, daytime concert, flew in with a NZ artist for the end of tour show and had a barbeque in the blazing sunshine. Also, toured with a band and played at a weird venue (can't remember the name) and then received a cooked breakfast from the venue owner the next morning (??!!) - so, yeah, Nelson is pretty good to tour through, IMHO. Er...that was a few years ago now.
SO, on the tour topic, what are the Nelson venues like now? I read in the Rip It Up rumours column that the Artery has closed due to the city council?? Bummer...tell us more?
yeah the artery has gone, which may be part of our problem at the moment, if it was due to gross miss management, causing the council to withdraw funding. or the council are just a pack of old white middle class bastards is still a point of debate around town.
The council has always given the impression that funding will return and the artery will reopen when someone with the right stuff fronts up to run it.
I suppose it's a case of wait and see but don't hold ya breath
Hmmm - @least you have The Gathering:) Lots of Cantabs I know head Nth for that every Summer. Doesn't Nelson clock up more sunshine hours than any other place in Gods-own? Sounds ideal for outdoor gigs. I also heard Bill Gates was buying property there (prob next door to Russell Crowe's summer residence:)
OK - devil's advocate question time...
So, where would the Under The Influence show actually play in Nelson if it was to go there? Is there a good, reliable venue in the town now, that is managed properly and has a good reputation with the public AND the council? Are there any more Nelson-ites reading this, who can support Aka's wish for more shows to head through the town? Is there any buzz about the tour possibly passing through Nelson at all? Is it possible to do an outside show?(Given that it's winter, it doesn't sound as appealing as it might, Mr. Firewarden..)
I think it takes a certain amount of motivation and willingness on the part of a community to make things happen - especially if that community is 'off Highway 1', as Aka has pointed out. Certainly bringing up the discussion is a good start, but it needs to move further than that, and quickly, if you're going to be a part of the UTI tour programme...as I mentioned in a post earlier, they are still confirming dates and towns...and what a lineup!
Get cracking Nelson!
hey Teina - is this topic worthy of a poll?
ok there are 4 other nelsonian nzmers that I know of... way to go guys thanks for leaving me hanging here, a lone voice in the wilderness.. talk about the sound of one hand clapping.
ok there are 3 other venues that come to mind.... that is if you don't want to play the pubs,
the Trafalgar centre.... holds up to 2000, hosted such gigs as tenia turner, the seekers and shihard
the royal theatre.... seated venue, home to the local rep group but has held gigs for people like the runga, finn, dobbin tour, anika moa and finn, ... a genteel sort of place but soon to have it's sox rocked off by mother guru on the 9th of august
the nelson school of music, ... have never been here myself.... but I hear it's not bad .... next to strut their stuff on this stage is ray columbus and suzanne lynch.
there are other places like yazza but theses are small and I d'know you might have to fight with the local folk music group to use the venue.... but I did read on this site that clowndog will be playing there late next month.... with some sort of rock quest group (now if that don't bring another nelsonian outa the wood works nothing will )
hmm i am very late for this discussion. ah well my response to a few of the assorted points made further up.
i'm pretty sure it was mismanagement that closed the artery. dave white has tried to open a new club and almost bankrupted himself due to poor management before the doors are even ajar. the council (easy targets for derision as they often seem to be) actually appear pretty on to it in terms of live music. the youth council does get a lot of input into music events AND they get listened to, which is great.
the gathering is buggering off i think. too many copycat parties have sprung up and boy racers have staged a takeover of the g, prompting many of their core supporters to go to the smaller, more intimate parties. a shame, because the g was really good for nelson - but these things happen.
to tell you the truth, i think there would have to be a lot of publicity for UTI for it to succeed. there are music people around, but alot of them are hugely lazy - unlike wellington, where there seems to be a group of hardcore music fans that populate all the gigs. i think it's obviously a population thing - the more people you have, the more likely you'll have people that will turn up to anything. a venue is another problem, especially in winter. the trafalgar centre has to have a massive crowd to succeed..... and this very rarely happens. with the artery closed, there are a few bars around like the loft but nothing specifically for music. summer is a whole different matter, you could probably organise to UTI concert to coincide with our summer festival, and last year that meant that motherguru played in the middle of the main street - very cool atmosphere.
looking at aka's venues, i reckon the royal theatre is gonna be a weird place for motherguru to play.... all seating? same with school of music - it was definitely built for classical concerts.... again, all seater. i'm not totally sure what music UTI has (shoot me, ive been to busy to take notice) so maybe the seating styles wuld suit.....?
this has been too long, but a nice wee plug here, thanks to aka!!!
