What's your guilty song pleasure?

Ok, ok.

So these forums have been a bit serious lately and I think we all know how 'good' everyone's taste in music is. I think a more telling topic is how 'bad' is your taste. C'mon we all have those deep dark secret songs we like. The ones you download off the net when you think noone is looking, or possibly when drunk. The ones you can't quite explain why, but you always liked.

Sometimes the most unlikely music gets stuck on some pleasure receptor in some deep part of your brain and stays there. I'm not talking about differing opinions on music here, I'm talking songs even you, yourself feel guilty owning up to.

So who's got the cahones to own up to it? It's one thing to defend the merits of a song/band you passionatley believe in, but what about when even you think it's cheesy?

Let it out people, and the healing can begin.

I'll start with a couple to show I'm not a chicken:
The Safety Dance - Men Without Hats
something about this song, the poppy, early electronica sound. I don' know.
Once Bitten Twice Shy - WhiteSnake.
I grew up in very small towns, where cruisin main was about 2 minutes both ways.

Forums: The Bar,

mr postman........ my one true love was in Malaysia for the summer holidays.... oh and the song with the line it's going to be a long lonely summer filled emptiness, mummble mummble every day mummble letter and seal it with a kiss.... oh to be a teenager in love

Bad Medicine - Bon Jovi
Just A Girl - No Doubt
My Sharona - The Knack
The Proclaimers - 500 Miles
Fool Again - Westlife
Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes - ???
Tears from a Clown - Smokey Robinson
Stuck In The Middle With You - Stealers Wheel
Wired For Sound - *gasp* Cliff Richard

Thats all I can bear to reveal at this stage.

yes, Bon Jovi is a guilty pleasure of mine as well. But the one song that embedded itself in my cortex was 'Living on Prayer'. Almost impossible for me not to kick in along to the opening lyrics when I hear this one, with empassioned facial expressions to boot.

The whole 'Sunshine on Leith' album ~ The Proclaimers
Unskinny bop~ Poison
A good heart~ Fergal Sharkey

i subconsciously know the lyrics to the entire "open up and say ahh" album. I almost bought the tape the other day at real groovy for 5 bucks.

Did they have it on CD? Hmm, I have a feeling that it won't be as good as I remember it.

I had the "Australasian Tour Edition" of "Open Up and Say Ahhh" on tape. This meant that the tape case was printed with yellow and green ink (y'know, like everything in Australia is), and inside were some special "collector cards" showing each of Poison doing various rock things. I think Rikki Rocket was in a bubble bath and there was a woman with long legs standing astride above him.

Damn, I loved that album when I was 14.

Hey, glue, you shouldn't feel guilty for liking the Proclaimers - that album is ace.

come on eileen - dexy midnight runners
like a prayer - madonna

MADONNA RULES

the high school i went to had a special dance made up for come on eileen (cheesy and all as it was) so that will always have a somewhat weird yet special place in my heart! ha ha

love and affection - Nelson
the real slim shady (or whatver it's called) - eminem

that Norah Jones song, even contemplating buying the album. what a voice.
the new Sum 41 song except for the guitar solo bit, that sucks.
the Playschool Theme song.

the Playschool Theme song- Shit thats a classic:)

The lack of Playschool on our television is creating a giant gap in the quality education and entertainment of our society!!

BRING BACK PLAYSCHOOL (hey even repeat the old skool episodes if neccesary!!)

For me guilty pleasure music is like porn. I wouldn't buy any because it'd be really embarassing going into a cool record shop and buying, say, a Backstreet Boys CD from an uber-hip clerk (and they secretly mock lamo purchasers, no doubt about it). But on the internet I can download a Backstreet Boys CD in the privacy of my own home and no one need ever know. Unless of course I make a list revealing that I like such songs as:

Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely - Backstreet Boys
So Good - Destiny's Child
Regulators - Warren G
Mirda Rock - Reggie Griffin

Actually, has anyone ever gone way out into the suburbs and bought a CD from a chain store in a mall because you're too ashamed to get it from your local cool independant record store? I have.

the 'cant get you otta my head' song by kylie.
its got the stinkiest groove

/'cant get you otta my head' song by kylie

Nothing to do with the vid, then, Hollis - she's caused my flatmate a few fluttery moments with that one! Can't say I complain when it comes on either.

pure class
that was my song of the year

regulators is a great song.

oh yeah -- over-produced american hip-hop. love it.

aaliyah - try again
missy elliot - get yr freak on
destiny's child - bootylicious (all time fave)
eminem & dr dre - forgot about dre
outkast - bombs over baghdad

I saw outcast peform Bombs over Bagdad on stage at a musical festival called Area 1. It was full on, over the top dancers, pyrotechnics, and the works. One the most entertaining shows at the all all day musicfest. Not a fan, but I must say they can put on a show.

kylie is bringing cred back to pop. I quite like all of her new songs so far.
*ducks and covers*

Go Stephan!

Who can forget Kylies duet with Jason Donovan? Especially For you. Magic.

ya know, Kylie and Jason were great together....I have (had) both of their tapes!
That song is definitely an old favourite! Magic indeed!

Liking that duet of Jason and Kylie's is definately an all time shame of mine!
As much as I hate to admit it, Kylie's most recent stuff, hasn't been all that bad......!?!?!?!?!?!

Not really ashamed of any of my musical tastes, but I'm sure some of you will think I should be when I confess to quite liking K'Lee's cover of Broken Wing when it first came on TV. The fact that I think all of her subsequent output is utter shite doesn't really make me change that opinion.

Must say I have a certain affection for some 80's pop things, but they may well have a certain retro charm now anyway - like Cyndi Lauper's "True Colours" and a couple of tracks by the Bangles.

the 80's pop stuff is the source of most of my guilty pleasures as well. Must have somethin to do with the sponge like properties of the brain while growing up.

Since everyone has been sharing, here's another one of mine:
'One Night in Bangkok' - Murry Head.
reason - I don't know, god help me, I don't know.

;)

ohhhhhh i love 'one night in bangkok' i love all the songs from 'chess' actually.
'keep the faith' bon jovi
'mr brownstone' guns n roses'
'december' collective soul (oh the shame)

cannot explain why......

maybe they are just too catchy or something..

I liked alot of songs from the 80's - here are the most questionable ...

Catch Me I'm Falling - Pretty Poison
Pop Goes The World - Men Without Hats(?)
Mickey - Toni Basil
Brand New Lover - Dead Or Alive
Look Away - Big Country
Right On Track - Breakfast Club
Cruel Summer - Bananarama
Live It Up - Mental As Anything
Kids In America - Kim Wilde
Turning Japanese - The Vapors
Wild Horses - Gino Vanelli
If I Was - Midge Ure
(GOD! I even remember the artists!!!)

2 myshkin - LOVED Cyndi Lauper! First album bought :)
2 squared - I can only remember 'Great White' doing 'Once Bitten...'
But...
'We can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind...'
YES - Remembered it! Loved it! Downloaded it! - SHAME ON ME! lol

kerenza, you're right! it was Great White, not WhiteSnake damn.
but I just realized why WhiteSnake was stuck in my head - 'Hear I Go Again' ;)

Kim Wilde's another I'd add - not just Kids in America, also Cambodia. And how could I have left off the Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star". As for Cyndi - the odd thing is I never really appreciated her when she came out, but I put on her record a while ago, dunno why really, and liked what I heard, a lot.

As for another guilty pleasure - this one's not mine, but I was talking to a guy the other night - he was telling me that he'd been told, in all seriousness, that the Barron Knights made the best ever record. Anyone here willing to put their hands up to that?

//the Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star".
How about PUSA version of that song?? I like that

LOVED Warren G when I was at High School.

TIFFANY!!!
"I Think We're Alone Now"...
But my favourite was "I Saw Him Standing There". I had no idea it was a Beatles song first.

Tiffany was cool......then I recently seen what she had done for playboy (!) I still think that her music was cool thoigh.

All I really remember of Tiffany is seeing DJ and Stephanie Tanner (Full House) dancing in front of a mirror and singing into their hairbrush "I think we're alone now"
Secret shame of mine - watching Full House!!! (even the reruns) aaarrrgggghhhhh!!!!! I need help - urgently!

I don't understand what you have to feel guilty about with most of these tracks - except of course Tiffany (I think we're a porn-star now)

The track I listen to the most at work is....... Brian Jones Town Massecre - Lets pretend that its Summer. And Im guilty cos I ripped it off the net. ;-)

Shania Twain - Come on over. (the entire album)

just the cover, or the actual songs...?
ah yes, I remember the song that burnt its imprint on the populous:

"whoa oh oh -- totally crazy
forget I'm a lady
Men's shirts - short skirts
Oh, oh, oh, really go wild
yeah, doin' it in style
Oh, oh, oh, get in the action
feel the attraction
Color my hair
do what I dare
Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free
yeah, to feel the way I feel
Man! I feel like a woman!"

"Colour my hair - do what I dare": Shania, living on the edge. And my favourite couple of lines...

"The best thing about being a woman
Is the prerogative to have a little fun"

"Prerogative"! In a song! Brilliant! She's up there with K'Lee (crunk!) for songs about loose living that use great language. Rock on...

// "Prerogative"! In a song! Brilliant!

So you aren't familiar with Bobby Brown's song "It's my perogative"?
He put in the title and made it the chorus.

now that you mention it...
yes. quite liked it too. yet another guilty song pleasure.

perhaps another thread ... "unwieldly words in songs?"

or/and just really odd words that don't seem to fit

Mickey - Toni Basil

i was spinning round on my chair sining along with song a couple of weeks ago. how embarrasing, but oh how i love that song.

Went to a club just a couple years back and the DJ was playing Mickey. Was like being in a timewarp - especially when he spun 'We built this city on rock and roll' (Starship) next. You'd think people would've left, but they really got into it. Even the ("I'm really 20") 16 year olds!
Hmmm, never did see the guy again....

we built this city - now that brings a smile to my face!

'You can say what you want but it wont change my mind'....or words to that effect by Texas.
Anything by Snoop
Anything by Midnight Oil
Anything by Billy Joel
Anything by Queen

I am of the opinion that Queen's "A Night At The Opera" is one of the best albums of the 70s.

Queen is brilliant...exactly. I know all the songs, at the age of about 13 or 14, I had almost every album. No it is excellent guilty listening pleasure. Freddy mecury is a god in my eyes. Dont get me wrong I know good stuff when I see it. Just compared to the stuff i listen to today, it seems a little strange. But my heart will always be plucked like Bryan May plucks his guitar strings when I hear Queen.
