The greatest NZ song/s of all time?

i know it's an impossible question really but i'm interested to hear what songs have a special place in nz music. The sort of songs that you first think of when someone mentions new zealand music.Songs that make you homesick when your crammed in a flat in london or sleeping on a beach in south africa. I guess they don't necessarliy have to be great - they just sorta stand for something.

i think of Dominion Road by the muttonbirds(?) and I See Red first off and If i was to get homesick it would probably be to the 3d's Spooky or garageland's Nude Star

Forums: BOTB,

"hush, not a word to Mary" by John Rowles

words cannot describe the emotion this song makes me feel.

An oldie but a goody, Asian cigaretes by the Dudes, I think its by them? I think they're kiwi?Any way thats all I can think of at the mo.

I would have to say:
Dave Dobbyn - Loyal
Slit Endz - Six Months in a Leaky Boat
and of course best band would go to :
Shihad!!

its gotta be

Bliss - DD Smash
Come to the Sabbat - Timberjack (from way back in the 60's i think)

oh did i mention Stole My Car - that parody from back in i think 96 or sumthin

"counting the beat" by the "swingers". thrashed in ads but a classic.

make - bailter space

ooh ooh that Chris Knox song on the vogels bread ad.argh I can never remember the name of it. The 1st stereobus album specially "lie in arms" , and "in the neighbourhood" by sisters underground?? aaaaaaand how could we not include.....
"po kare kare aaaaaaanna, nga waia mmmuuummmm doodaa, whiti umum something, nga ina ana eh!"

can't resist this kind of topic...if a (cool hip) foreigner asked me what nz music to listen to for a good overview of nz music, and I really wanted to impress them, I'd whip out...

  • DLT & Che Fu - Chains (and maybe DLT's Black Panthers)
  • Straitjacket Fits - Bad Note for a Heart
  • Split Enz - I See Red, Dirty Creature, My Mistake
  • Swingers - Counting the Beat
  • Shihad - Bitter
  • Dave Dobbyn - Loyal
  • Gordons - Sensible Shoes (I think it was the Gordons)
  • Blam Blam Blam - There is no Depression in NZ

hmmm...that'll do. could sit here all day thinking about it.

now that I think about it, maybe a top 5 albums might be a good idea, maybe a new topic.

Holiday Makers - Sweet Lovers in the Night
Ardijah - Time makes the Wine

this song has been bugging me and im looking for it on napster, does anyone here know who sings that song jezebel? wasnt the singer of that going to tour here with inxs?

hey there....it was Jon Stevens formally of Aussie based Noiseworks. Contains the then contentious line "you wooed me then screwed me, but what the hell..." aaaaah....NZ circa '79

john rowles.. cheryl moana marie.

best song ever ...Trinity,little things.

I have finally remembered. well truth is i saw the ad on telly again: chris knox "not given lightly" phew that wa really bugging me

in no particular order:

  • Straitjacket Fits- Cast Stone. Gotta love that feedback outro.
  • HDU- Lull
  • 3D's- Spooky
  • Able Tasmans- Mary Tyler Moore
  • anything by Bailterspace
  • The Nixons(now Eye TV)- Basement Static

Anything that breaks the trend like Salmonella Dub's Loletta or trinity roots Little Things. The energy and emotional mix of these songs can't be explained.

At the mo it's gotta be Zed's 'Come On Down'. Of all time it's gotta be something of the band that I've forgotten their name. Dammit!!! Something starting with F.

Falter

check out the date on this thread, falter would have been in nappies

'Gutter Black' - Hello Sailor...

"I'm gonna build a room a room that echos..."

Hard to pick one, so I will pick a few...
Liberal backlash angst- CHRIS KNOX
AFFCO- THE SKEPTICS
Hail- STRAITJACKET FITS
Grey Lynn- ABLE TASMANS
and........
Every HDU song released.

zed:glorafilia
oh!daisy
im cold
renegade fighter
come on down!!!!!!11

Mmm i gotta agree, Renegade Fighter is the best by far, but i think all of zeds songs on the album are wicked.
I also reckon special & straight into your arms by hjt are awesome! or tina by canvas! grrr so many!! i cant pick!

i think the greatest nz song ever is shihad - home again what do you think?

It's difficult to pinpoint greatest songs "of all time" - April Sun in Cuba (Dragon), Bliss (Th' Dudes), There is No Depression in NZ (Blam Blam Blam), French Letter (the Herbs) are only a few really great home-grown classics but they're from an entirely different era.

..and with the astounding diversity of NZ music you'd have to make quite a large list to encompass all its aspects.. :-)

My shortlist would include:

  • Counting the Beat by the Swingers, of course.
  • Heavenly Pop Hit by the Chills.
  • A Day Away, Home Again or LaLa Land by Shihad
  • Message to My Girl or Straight Ol' Line by Split Enz
  • Slice of Heaven by Dave Dobbyn & the Herbs
  • George by Headless Chickens
  • You Gotta Know by Supergroove

  • ...and Jesus I was Evil by Darcy Clay.

    Actually, I'm suffering from that malady when you write something one day, then read it a few days later and think "What was I thinking??". Oh well.

    I reckon Counting the Beat will win, out of sheer recognition value.

    ...and I Love My Leather Jacket by the Chills.

    Most recognised: "Counting the Beat" by The Swingers (of course)
    Homesick Value: Anything by the Exponents
    Most rockin: "Renegade Fighter", "Little Things", "Home Again"

    I have not heard a lot of Weta or Betchadupa, but that's all gonna change come Orientation! :-))

    Cheers,Tim.

    DAMMIT!! How could I forget "Got to know" by Supergroove?
    Oh well.

    BAD NOTE FOR A HEART straitjacket fits
    nice one.

    I reckon that the best N.Z. songs are "OncomingDay" The Chills, "Bliss" by Th'Dudes and last but not least "Not Given Lightly" by Chris Knox who I grew up with in Invercargill and was basically like my big brother.

    Yeah! Not Given Lightly!

    Okay, Top 10 (until I think of some other ones and change my mind)
    in no particular order:

    *Mesage to my girl - Split Enz;
    *Nobody Else - Tex Pistol & Rikki Morris;
    *Sweet Lover - Holiday Makers;
    *Wait and See - Shihad;
    *As Good as it Gets - the feelers;
    *Spill the Light - Betchadupa;
    *Home Again - Shihad;
    *Bliss - Th' Dudes;
    *History Never Repeats - Split Enz;
    *Why Does Love do This to Me? - Exponents;

    YES!...Nobody Else and History Never Repeats...

    'good' to see that NONE of these made it into the top 30 songs list!! Oh well.....

    I seriously thought that History never repeats, Message to my girl or Bliss would have made it on the list!

    Ooh! Home again managed to get to number 30 that's right - phew! :)

    Shihad- Gimme Gimme or Bitter...

    For sheer longevity Nature must be a classic.

    Hit for the Formuyla in 1969, more recently for The Muttonbirds and even more recently released by Margaret Urlich.

    For those in our late 30's anything by Dragon, Dudes, Dance Exponents,Hello Sailor, Herbs etc.

    Some oddities also like Dance Around The World - Blerta, Saint Paul - Shane ( a saccharine go at Paul McCartney ) , Out On The Street - Space Waltz, I Need Your Love - Golden Harvest and there was a song with a girls name by Dave McCartney and The Pink Flamingos that I can't think of.

    It's great that we are going through another period now where there is heaps of good NZ music to choose from. Keep up the good work.

    PS in response to an earlier question Jezebel was by Jon Stevens I think

    Well, looking at the 35 or so replies so far, nothing purely electronic has been mooted, and even though i can't argue with "counting the beat" or "not given lightly" my vote goes to Mechanism's "This reign will fall". Good on Kog for re-releasing Morningstar. If you haven't heard it and want to appreciate the roots of NZelectronica, go out and pick up a copy, wait until very late at night when things are starting to get really bent, turn the lights down and volume up and prepare to be assaulted. If you'all think Shihad rocks try this stuff out for size.

    Sour Queen - The Able Tasmans
    Point That Thing Somewhere Else - The Clean
    Pink Frost - The Chills
    Blue Nails - Fiona McDonald

    "Deb's Night Out" - Shihad, Without a doubt their coolest song. A bit mellow for some, but damn it gets me going every time. When I saw the boys play at O-week '99 at Vic Uni Jon said this was his favourite song on the Shihad playlist, however this was pre-General Electric so maybe that's changed for him. Honorable mentions to Che Fu/Dam Native for "Chains", Anything by Bic Runga, and Breaks Co-op, Most Shihad stuff, and "Better get used to it" by the Dead Flowers, any Crowded house/Split Enz stuff etc. etc. all and all heaps of good stuff, and all New Zealand product.
    Cheers.

    Damn, I forgot any Concorde Dawn an Shapeshifter looks to be big if it can reach the markets it's contemporaries do overseas and in NZ. Check out their stuff, any d'n'b head will recognise the pure quality these dudes expell.
    Ta.
