Forums: NZ Music,

LIke house music? Or like art house what?

wicked for being original in your region

are you by chance a SW fan?

//What is happening to the country of nonpop music

It could be a whole lot worse.
I guess it depends on what your definition of 'pop music' is, but I'd say that there's still a hell of a lot more non-pop music than pop music here.

Unless there's some sort of seedy underground pop industry which I don't know about...

Heh. *kicks self*

"underground pop industry"

... oxymoronic indeed

I suck for so much as typing that...

//I suck for so much as typing that...

hahahahahahahaha
classic, i don't know why, but that slightly mangled sentence had me laughing very loudly

sorry to write such a pointless post but

why do people see commercialism as a downside?
I think it is necessary, a part of development. Sure you can moan, commercialism is bad. I won't disagree but you have to get over that. Your moaning won't change the fact that it is very much part of our lives right now, however if you have the ability to change people's perspective, great. I mean eventually it will change with time, commercialism will become less, but because of lots of factors affecting the social psyche not people moaning.

oh yeah and if someone can come up with an alternative way that NZ Music can exist without people buying records, paying for gigs and labels being able to see some profit then I'd like to hear it.

What Stefan said . . . always amusing how some consumers would like to impose the "suffering artists" on artists who would rather not . . .

As the big radio stations and record labels lean towards broadening their market, they put their feelers out into more alternative sounds, and as time goes on those alternative sounds become mainstream. It wasn't so long ago that they wouldn't have touched hip hop and now look at it all. Maybe what we now consider consumer music and 'pop' is just another artist actually making appealing music, that is slowly being absorbed by the masses. In saying that if you're making house music then you've got a massive fan base to tap into. I reckon house music is the 'pop' of electronica.

Consider, say, Missy Elliot's "Get Ur Freak On", which would have been considered avant-garde/"unlistenable" ten years ago . . . the landscape changes.

remember that "pop" is short for "popular". so pop music is infact what people like listening to. such bands as salmonella dub etc. who used to be quite off the wall, are now getting more and more mainstream. not because they are changing their sound but because people are changing their tastes.

Chew on that as u stroke ur dog!

pop IS short for popular, that is how the genre first began, however, it doesn't nesassarily mean that anymore (whoa, deja vu, i posted this same thing earlier today on another thread), otherwise you would be saying that all popular music is "pop" music.

cradle of filth is quite popular.

that is indeed correct. all popular music is "pop". it is just the media has warped the word to use for gay little goy and girl groups. cradle of filth may be popular but not neccesarily "pop". it has its niche but doesnt get regualar airplay on commercial radio stations hence leading us to believe it isnt "pop". "pop" music in the true meaning of the word is any popular music. but in recent times it has changed. leading many people to establish their own perceptions of what "pop" is.

yes the question is, do we want nz turning pop, we don't want a country filled with kylies and celine dions. The only reason the country getting into it is because the kids?

Ha. We don't have the population for that; and with the music industry starting to look like it's turning into the book industry . . . we don't have the cash for that.

But its the kids who are our music's future (sorry that sounded naf) but it's true, those kids are going to grow up and start creating the music that NZ listens to. Especially if the nation are listening to crap commercial stations. Instead of worrying about it encourage kids to listen to some of the more underground stations, bands, whatever, and tune them into good, quality music.

I think you will find that with the commercial stuff going on there will always be those that seek the underground. People laud the lesser known movements but how many would continue to do so if they became the majority as some hope?
