Stupid Genre names

I think the last one I heard was "Christian Goth Death Metal" and I'm like what??
I still reckon that "Grunge" is stupid, none of those band really sounded the same, just because the came from one city "Seattle" they had to be that one "Genre"!!
Also none of them (as far as I know) called themselves "Grunge", the only I know that called themselves "Grunge" was SilverChair' but they were a 'wannabe grunge' band back then anyway.

Forums: NZ Music,

i think post rock is the worst genre name. It is an extremely arrogant wanky term.
I also think art rock is a lame term.

I think art rock is probably one of the most descriptive genre names around.

no way stefan. hehe. Art rock is lame as. All rock is some crazy form of art.

yeah but "art rock" usually takes a more expressive approach and uses more than the medium of sound. Not all rock is art most is entertainment.

No stefan because people who usually play art rock usually for get to rock like radiohead. haha
i think it is a very pretentious term.

and that is why it is also descriptive.

But take bailterspace i dont think they make pretentious music but they get called Art rock when really it is more spacerock or noise rock.

not all art rock is pretentious but it can be.
I wouldn't call Bailterspace art rock either.

ok who would you call art rock stefan?

the usual suspects, off the top of my head: Tool, Pink Floyd, Radiohead...

When I was at the Tool gig, I had the strongest of impressions that Tool is the Pink Floyd of today.

blink, no wank rock would be The Datsuns and The D4, their ilk.

yeah i would say that.
but wanky rock goes to tool

surely datsuns etc...would be "cock rock" or "nu old rock" :) gotta love nu old rock.
tool are definately "wank rock" or maybe "toss rock" or "cheese riff rock" or "nu wank rock" or "can't be bothered writing new riffs rock"....they cross many genres, a very fine versatile band. No wait i think they are actually "technical no passion rock"
c'mon....lay it on me, sling some rebuttal at me.

you know blink i really want to

but it will just be a 'yes they are..... no they aren't' argument, which i have no time for

// c'mon....lay it on me, sling some rebuttal at me.

Bite me.

stefan....fair call.

i don't hate tool that much. i just enjoy stirring.

blink blows goats for quarters!

quarters?

yer sorry for getting or yanky-doodle on everyones arses!

lets say;
25cents eh?
good?
right?
merry Christmas!

wow, I'm sorry I didn't realise you are that bad off.
25 cents is a Merry Christmas huh?
I think it is admirable that Blink blows goats so that you can enjoy the festive season.

2 bloody right Neil!

this really is turning into a bar topic.... damn aye.....

it had so much promise - who the fuck is neil? and do you ever write anything sane judy?

so anyway, i was listening to eulogy and stinkfist just before. they are the best best best songs i have ever heard, everything else is crap, especially anything by that shit band 'ejector'.

that's how you stir blink ;). people like judy won't be able to resist blasting my ass now....

mmmmmm ok. I could see people calling radiohead and pink floyd "art rock" because they are terrible. but tool?

Sorry for being so blunt

// who the fuck is neil?

I believe it is a Young Ones quote.

// but tool?

very much so. The use of film during their shows, strange video clips, Mr.Keenan and his messages, the people dancing/hanging, the body paint...

that's some good stirring jimi. as i had sai on a previous forum. eulogy is one of my fav all time tracks. I used to close up at sounds every day playing that track. But i just felt that they haven't moved on from there, kinda like how RATM kick ass but all there albums sound like they could from the same session. Anyway...i get bored talking about tool...... just as bored as listening to them :)

yeha very true. Tool doing the whole pink floyd experiance visual and aural totally.

oh and for the record ive never heard ejector, so im just bullshitting. and i dont think that tool are the best band ever.

i know you probably realise that, but it's too risky to let it stand. i would be an absolute fuckwit.
heh, cant write anything without apologising - call me mr. no balls....

hey mr no balls.
have you completed your "semis tasks" yet?

Tool musicially is progressive rock/experimental/alternative. Conceptially they are artisitic so maybe you can call them art rock.

// wank rock would be The Datsuns and The D4

take that back arse hole! the datsuns and the D4 play good old fashioned rock 'n' roll with a modern twist. wank rock would be Rubicon. dont take on the flying nun bands coz u will lose!

// progressive rock/experimental/alternative

you could say the same about Pink Floyd. One label is usually not enough to define a band.

say what? grow up.
wank rock as in over the top, good stuff but yeah lots of poses and guitar solos.

take it easy benny, we all friends here. Stefan is using the term wank rock affectionately

I think Tool would be best listed under "Math rock".

Tool woule be "wank rock" not art rock :)

It seems to me that every new band these days define their sound with a whole new genre subset which is stupid. Trying to define a bands sound beyond the generals to me seems pointless, the music should speak for itself.

Genre definitions are useful in referring to style of music, which is of increasing importance as a musical element. Attempting to be as accurate as possible by creating well chosen genre subsets can be useful in understanding and describing music. However, I think the problem is when mass fashion and commercial interest interferes to degrade styles and when people expect music to conform to their preferred combination of stylistic elements without due appreciation of other important aspects of the music. Fashion, culture and commercial victims should not be the driving force of music growth, as popularity is.

Post music ... ??

or post music rock

post rock garage-punk indie-crossover dub

SHUT UP DICK!!!

Isn't post music already included in the free noise movement?

don't forget the "we don't like to be pigeonholed by a genre" genre

more seriously "alt-country" is my pet-peeve. I also recently heard of "nu-indie". The nerve of some people.

hahaha.... Nu-Divas... Britney, Nelly Furtado etc..... hahahahaahahah

/more seriously "alt-country" is my pet-peeve

Do you dislike the label or the music it tries to cover? As a description, I think its quite a useful one, because you certainly can't call what a lot of the alt.country people doing country, there's a definite step away from the conventions of that genre while still nodding towards it but you wouldn't necessarily want to go the whole hog and call them alterntaive.

Of course, as soon as label for a genre gains any kind of cred at all, a whole bunch of bands jump in on the bandwagon and that label loses any meaning - like punk.

Ever heard 'Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues'? :)
