Is it any good?

Just read the NZ Herald's so~so review of Under the Influence.
Has anyone bought it? Is it worth getting sent over to Scotland for my pals and I to organise a piss up and bring the bongs out for?

Forums: NZ Music,

The clean :amazing
HDU : also amazing

the rest shite

yeah you're rite andrew I was a little dissapointed with the rest although becthadupa's version of outer space is quite catchy and reignites some memories as does death of a maiden. is there a link to the review? oh gluepot you can have a little listen at smokecds.com :)

Yeah i preferr the originals of death and a madien and outerspace though.
They should have got the gutman in to cover something that would have been cool.
Am i the only one who thought it was stupid that bands like betchadupa and pan am and the d4 were involved over the old school?

You weren't the only one, Andrew . . .

Report from initial listen @ Echo Records :

Classic :
Tall Dwarfs cover of SF's "If I Were You" - (expletive deleted), it's easy to forget how great Chris Knox can be as a vocalist - his whole malevolent, impish hobgoblin persona can often overshadow his talent; but I'd pick this cover over the original - matching Shayne Carter in terms of menace & smoulder is rare enough, but /trumping/ him . . .

Great :
Malkmus' cover of "Death & The Maiden" - I prefer the twitchier, tauter original (Graeme Downes is an alternate-universe Mark E Smith, ha). But still damn good.
Graeme Downes, "Same Old New World" - My god, he pulled it off etc. Best moment : the "You Cheat Yourself Of Everything That Moves" excerpt.

OK:
D4 covering Joe 90 - Great choice, but nothing out of the ordinary.
Hasselhoff Experiment - as above

Dud :
Garageland covering "Heavenly Pop Hit" - fun (novelty isn't a perjorative) but it's either lacking in staying power, or not fun /enough/.
betchadupa covering "Outer Space" - they completely & utterly missed the point here. Far too measured, nowhere near manic & spiky enough.
Pan Am - ARGH. Die, just die, alright?

(In Limbo :
the covers by HDU & the Clean - good, solid (ie what we'd expect from the respective bands); but I'll have to take a few more listens (& track down the originals) to say anything worthwhile (like, say, my blanket dismissal of Pan Am ha))

W/regard to the originals - nothing leapt out & bit me. I'd personally have preferred them to drop the originals and reduce it to one disc; leave the originals for the next FN comp(when was the last one? I mean, Pink Flying Saucers or Tuatara were great, etc)

yeah damn straight I mean how many times does a cover surpass its' original? i remeber reading somewhere (on this site i think) that a band should only cover a song if they think they can really add to it. in this case it appears that its only really been done for novelty value (no disrespect to FN for the idea).

have to agree with most of those calls.

betchadupa was pretty harsh. i haven't actually heard it on the cd yet but have heard the dupa play outta space live, and it goes off.
Is the reviewer giving PanAm shit just because of something personal. I haven't listened to the cd version yet, but heard it on the day while they were recording it and FUCK...it sounded good. I had never heard panam before and i was sold. They put so much passion into that recording, the recording was totally live, i mean even vocals were recorded when the band were playing. The only band to meet that energy was when shayne carter and HDU hooked up...fuck was i glad to be one of the few allowed in the room while that jam was unfolding.

I'm gonna have to listen to the cd..but it's a shame if PanAm don't come across well, because on the day they went offffff.
Death and the maiden was beautiful..fuck. I'll scan some of my photos from the day and put a link here soon.

blink whos that on the cover?

i didn't take that photo. there were 2 photographers allowed in the studio. me and fraser harding, fraser was shooting photos for the album artwork and i was shooting photos for magazines and publicity. but i think you'll find that it is tristan from hdu.

thought so! thanks bro :)

alright...i finally stuck some of my flying nun shots on my site.

go check out www.blink.net.nz and click on "flying nun 21"

cool. nice to see some band photos by blink without the trademark fuzzy lights.

fuzzy lights are sooo 2001

dood - those photos rawk...

yea, stupid fuzzy light photos....sooo anti those...:oP

Fuzzy lights are Blink's trademark. Dont go losing that trademark bwoy!

hey, its not like we can do anything about it ardvark...*mutters to self*

so anyway ian - wots ure trademark this year then???

fuzzy photos are more interesting to look at.
don't go changing.

dont go changin... to try to please me
you've never let me down befooore...
i couldnt love your fuzzy photos, any betteeer
i love them just the way they aaaareeee.....

cheers guys.

fuzzy lights...or as someone once said ...(dude..it's like there's a party in your photo and everyone's invited!) invention born out of desperation. using skate photography techniques. I am still loving it and will definately continue to use it. I am thinking about going old school black and white for a while though. seeing that doco "zboys" got me all nostalgic.

oooo... i for one LOVE b&w photos
would like to see some of that from ya

ahhhh - yes, B & W are deff the way to go, they are wayyyyyy classy.

goodo.

Niiiice photos, blink. Yum.

w/regard to betchadupa - hmmmn, it'd probably sound better live - the production could have smothered it. But I don't think betchadupa's guitar sound works in their favour with that track . . .
w/regard to PanAm - well, I'm a big fan of the original, & the direction PanAm took it in unfortunately fitted perfectly into what annoys me most about them (& again, the production -WTF?); read that as you will.

(hmmn. w/regard to bands playing in the melodic poprock vein of betchadupa/panam, for it to stand out for me (ie: not plod), the production is important. for example, I love what Dale Cotton's done with Mestar on Porcupine; but I was fairly indifferent to the Steamer EP due to production. etc.)

yum???? - fresh one. lol.

check out some of Fraser's 21st shots that didn't make the cut but are still primo

much respect goes out to fraser. he made me look like an amatuer chump on the day with his 3 cameras hanging around his neck..all with monster lenses and a camera blimp to cut sound out (only like 3 in the country). i was jealous as. He's got a really nice documentary style.
I just had my one litttle wee camera and little lense.

hey blink, i like the fact that you have a trademark..... and the photos look cool as well....!!

but my unimportant opinion is that you should do slightly more 'normal photos' using just the moment and angle to encapsulate the shot. the fuzzy party in my camera lights are rad, but there should be a few more ones in there like that sharp as one of tom larkin on his throne behind the drum kit (in your shihad section) - fuck i love that photo.

we thrive on diversity - but hey you're the photographer

//monster lenses and a camera blimp to cut sound out //

//I just had my one litttle wee camera and little lense// - blink

i am so very jealous. my camera is held together with cellotape and glue.
it is about 25 years old.
and it has no zoom lens.

but it has taken some pretty decent photos in its time.
sadly, i think it wants to retire - after every gig, something else falls or snaps off it. so i just bring out the glue and tape.....

jimi, yeah that was my point.

i actaully just found out that its at least 40 years old!!!! and in the old days it was bought for around 15 shillings!! hahahahahahahaha.

man...this went from discussing the flying nun album..to discussing my photographic technique.

all good.

//after every gig, something else falls or snaps off it.

i've broken 3 lenses thus far. 1 of them was my friends that i was borrowing cause i broke mine the night previous.....woe is the pit.

ah sorry stefan, restating what you had said :(

sorry

what? don't be silly boy. I was just saying that because what I said was brief and you said it a whole lot better. Hmm, I shouldn't do quick posts, eh?

when are you sticking up your "guess who" review stefan?

i bet i could guess who DIDN'T turn up for dinner :P
