I have been to many a rockquest, ashamadly so, but can say with pride that last nights Wellington regionals proved to be the most entertaining yet.
The Lady Bugs were fucking mad. At the start of their second song, the guitarist who had already shed his USA Flag Sparkly waistcoat, climbed on top of the speaker stack, Once up there he proceeded to pull down his pants, playing for about 20 secs with his pants around his ankles, he then jumps off the stack, pants still around his ankles and proceeds to stumble around the stage knocking over the other band members, trying to continue playing the song.
Meanwhile, another member was yelling at the crowd through a megaphone.
The Lady Bugs then played 2 minutes overtime and had their final sample cut off because they wouldn't get off stage, security guards were panicking and the rockshop crew responsible for the drum kit that the lady bugs were standing on were getting nervous.
When a representative from each band went on stage to recieve the awards, the lady bugs guitarist (thinking the band were already disqualified) wore a "pepsi" t-shirt on stage.
Completely shocked The lady Bugs were called out for the "coke stage image" award, Recieving the award wearing his "pepsi" shirt and getting evil glances from the rockquest organisers, the guitarist kisses Ainslie Allen (judge), and then throws the Goats to the audience and walks off the stage.
ha,ha..some funny shit...
I wish more bands would take the rockquest less seriously.

Jeez u guys post stuff at 12:57 in the early morn. im the drummer from no worse for wear and i think that the rockquest is total BULLSHIT!!!!!! what are those guys on thinking they can decide which bands are good and which arent. Permafrost were good in their own way but i dont think they were the best band there, but i better shuddup because we're supporting them at zeal on the 22nd. everyone come to our gig we are gunna rock their pants off. i think there really should be a parallel competition run, where the craziest, most imflammatory band win.
in nelson, we had two-rockquest veterans throm-dim-bu-lator. they are fucking machines. when the bands got the pre-show talk about swearing (you might want to think about what your school would allow) they asked what constituted a swear word. we later found out why...
they took the stage with the crowd already booing them (crowds have long memories, they remembered last year). taking their positions, the boys from the throm started yelling at the crowd. the first song, called 'things' consisted of a long list of household appliances combined with a lot of opens and snare smacks.
it got better tho, between songs their 2 minute banter included such pearlers as 'i suck? you're all the way down there by my big toe, sniff it, lick it, taste it, you suck, i have the microphone!!!!' and so on.....
their second song started with bass and guitar being mashed together (literally) and was titled 'penises and vaginas'. the chorus was the title, repeated over and over....... they played about a 10 minute set, 3 minutes over the time allowed.
and to cap it all off, my mum asked me why the girl from thromdimbulator didnt get female musicianship award; they were all guys....

you can talk about bands who shock for a while, but if they're complete crap then the novelty wears off (not saying that this is the case with the ladybugs, they might have been robbed).
but rockquest is a total package competition, you can't expect a band to win cos they got the crowd worked up.

i think its awesome what the ladybugs did, the rockquest needs to be taken way less seriously by some bands.. I play in my own band and when in 3rd form entered the rockquest seriously with my band.. we played our song well but didn't make it....so i spent a whole year making an awesome song only to return the next year even more serious. again we didn't make it.. by this time i was angry (when i should have realised that we just plain sucked)...
so the third year we enter as a complete joke, play a cheesy (but origional song) dress up in costumes and make total dicks of ourselfs. This year we made it..
at the regionals we were all wearing mullets, the singer came out and introduced us (charlies chainsaw factory) and pointed to a guy in the crowd and told him that he had a moose up his ass. before our second song we introduced our triangle player who was a gorilla with a huge strap on cock. during the song he proceeded to have sex with the gorilla ..the crowd loved it... We didn't win the stage image award though.... some band that didn't even dress up won it... perhaps we were too vulgar >:)
after the rockquest we are way more well known, all because we decided to be less serious and make dicks of ourself...
by the way the rockquest is crap. One judge decides wether or not a band will make it (they are usually old so they don't know what the young people are buying these days) The band that won the christchurch regionals - the new origionals although were a good origional band played music that is not going to sell. As for last years winners carridge H well they might have had a 1 in a kind origional sound, but who's gonna buy it... its not mainstream enough to make it anywhere this side of the world..
Phenoex rising should have won the CHCH regionals as they were awesome

or perhaps stage image isn't just getting up on stage and looking like mistakenly discharged mental patients, perhaps it has something to do with how you move, groove and shimmy, not to mention physically relate to your music.

that's a blanket statement that is also untrue. in nelson we had two judges, both under 30 and both successful musicians......

as i understand, their ep is selling quite well. i think we have plenty enough mainstream, and i think there are plenty enough new mainstream coming through to keep that part steady. plus mainstream bands will always be in the industry, since they make money - they don't boost the industry for other styles of music, they just prove how well mainstream sells.

Bob I hope you know that in the judge panel not all of them agreed for The New Originals to win. One of the judges hated the New Originals, they were gonna choose Taiga but they are leaving soon so they couldn't give it to them. Maybe your bands style of music is "what sells" to fit in to the mainstream but not every band plays music for the money. Infact carriage H have released an EP and they have got rid of most of them already. You said in a earlier post your band was punk rock, then why do you want to fit into the mainstream? Punk rock was never supposed to sell lots of records it was the minority. I can't say I have open arms for the rockquest but they do try and be as fair as possible. But there was one thing i found unfair about the rockquest this year is that the judges chose Plastic Jane over so many other good bands when what they did was honestly quite bland, even my bands performance got more intresting feedback than that and we thought we sucked then.

But if you think that NZ has no fanfare for bands like HDU, JAKOB, DIMMER your mightly mistaken! Those are three bands who are innovative and do not try and sell lots of records but have packed out shows all over the country, hey they also sell alot of records!
